Su From So: JP Thuminad-Raj B Shetty's film has laughs galore, with a much bigger picture at play

Kannada actor-filmmaker Raj B Shetty's (of Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana and Toby fame, both of which are available on OTTplay Premium) latest theatrical presentation is a horror-comedy that he has produced and acted in. Called Su From So, this one, like Toby, presents Kannada cinema with a new filmmaker. This time around, he supported the vision of Tulu theatre artiste and occasional film actor JP Thuminad, who is best remembered for his role as Deepak in Sapta Sagaradaache Ello Side B. Released in theatres on July 25, 2025, without much fanfare, the film banked heavily on word-of-mouth publicity from its paid premieres and that paid off richly. A still from JP Thuminad's Kannada directorial debut, Su From So
Su From So is currently the highest grossing Kannada film of 2025 after only 5 days at the box office, even as overseas and dubbed versions releases are still pending. The film has been garnering rave reviews for blending a poignant social commentary about toxic masculinity and the plight of women at the receiving end of it, with laughs galore. Audiences across age groups have been thronging movie halls and the narrative on social media is that Raj and JP have delivered the most entertaining film of the year.
Su From So is far more than just a hilarious comedy
If one follows the comments that have been dropping on social media about Su From So, most are about how hilarious the film is from start-to-finish. The situational comedy, delivered by actors like Shaneel Gautham, Deepak Rai Panaje, Prakash Thuminad, Mime Ramadas and Pushparaj Bollar, among others, is what is being discussed widely. JP's film, though, is not mindless comedy that follows the 'possession' of a young man by a spirit from a neighbouring village – Sulochana from Someshwar.
It also provides social commentary on toxic masculinity and misogyny, as told from the perspective of Bhanu, a brilliant Sandhya Arekere, whose mother Sulochana, is the 'spirit' possessing Ashoka (JP). A middle-aged unmarried woman, with no one to protect her after her mother's demise, Bhanu's plight begins at home and follows her everywhere she goes, with all the men in her surrounding, including her uncle, having nothing but indecent intentions with her. As Bhanu pours her heart out to her 'mother', it triggers an introspection and call for action in Ashoka, which is the true highlight of Su From So.
The Kannada original Su From So had a limited release in the rest of India, but it will soon be available with dubbed versions in Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi. Dulquer Salmaan releases the Malayalam version on August 1, the Telugu one follows on August 8, while Anil Thadani will present the Hindi version, which does not have a confirmed date yet. The film's overseas theatrical journey also begins on August 1, in countries like the US, Germany, etc.

Urvashi Rautela Questions National Award Jury For Ullozhukku: 'It's Not A Pension...'

Last Updated: At 56, Urvashi won Best Supporting Actress at the 71st National Film Awards for Ullozhukku but questioned the jury's decision, urging transparency as she played a central role. At 56, veteran actor Urvashi clinched the Best Supporting Actress award at the 71st National Film Awards for her performance as Leelamma in Ullozhukku, directed by Christo Tomy. While the honour adds another feather to her cap, Urvashi has publicly questioned the jury's decision-making process, specifically why she was recognised as a supporting actor despite playing a central role in the film alongside Parvathy Thiruvothu. In an interview with Manorama News, Urvashi didn't shy away from expressing her concerns. 'Is there any standard scale for acting? Or is it that after a certain age, this is all you'll get?" she asked pointedly. She went on to say, 'This is not pension money to be silently accepted. How are these decisions made? What criteria is followed?" The actress recalled a similar experience from 2006 when she won the Best Supporting Actress award for Achuvinte Amma, a film in which she also played the lead role. 'There were politics even then," she said, noting that she has always chosen meaningful roles over lobbying. Urvashi added that both she and Parvathy had been submitted in the Best Actress category for Ullozhukku, further questioning the jury's final verdict. 'These awards should make the recipient proud instead of being handed over with no explanation," she said. The actor has also urged Union Minister Suresh Gopi to look into the selection process and support greater transparency, especially for Malayalam cinema. Ullozhukku is a 2024 Malayalam drama film written and directed by Christo Tomy. Featuring powerhouse performers Urvashi and Parvathy Thiruvothu in lead roles, the film also includes Arjun Radhakrishnan, Alencier Ley Lopez, Prashanth Murali, and Jaya Kurup in pivotal supporting parts. Recognised for its compelling storytelling, Ullozhukku was officially selected for the International Competition: Fiction category at the 2nd Eikhoigi Imphal International Film Festival, held in 2025. While Ullozhukku won Best Malayalam Film, 2018 was awarded Best Production Design and Pookkaalam bagged Best Editing at this year's National Awards. Vijayaraghavan took home Best Supporting Actor. However, notable omissions like Prithviraj Sukumaran's performance in Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life led to growing discontent. Even Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the jury's decision to honour The Kerala Story. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'How did Shah Rukh Khan win?' Legendary actress Urvashi asks boldly; A clever critique of National Awards Jury; 'What standards were used?'

Actress , who received the Best Supporting Actress award at the 71st National Film Awards for her role in 'Ullozhukku', has now openly questioned the selection criteria used by the jury, especially regarding being named Best Actor for the film 'Jawan'. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Urvashi demands answers on SRK and Vijayaraghavan 's awards 'What were the parameters for picking Shah Rukh Khan as Best Actor? and how did Vijayaraghavan get reduced to a supporting actor?' she asked in an interview with Asianet News. Urvashi did not hold back as she drew attention to the lack of clarity, suggesting that the selection process lacked consistency and fairness. She pointedly added, 'Kuttettan [Vijayaraghavan] is a veteran. At the very least, why wasn't he considered for a Special Jury Mention?' SRK's Emotional Message After First National Award: 'What I Do Matters' How can that be called a supporting role? Urvashi also shared a behind-the-scenes story about 'Pookkaalam', revealing she was initially offered the role opposite Vijayaraghavan but declined due to the heavy physical demands, including over nine hours of makeup work daily. 'Even for crores, I couldn't do it. But Vijayaraghavan endured it all and gave a deeply committed performance,' she said. 'How can that be called a supporting role?' 'It's not pension money' Her frustration extended beyond individual awards to the representation of Malayalam cinema itself. 'Why wasn't the Best Actress award shared this year? What's the protocol? Is there any standard scale?' she asked. According to the legendary actress, the award should not be taken home quietly: 'This is not pension money. If you're giving me something, I should feel happy receiving it.' She even called on Minister of State Suresh Gopi to investigate why Malayalam cinema was overlooked. Meanwhile, in response to the controversial and propaganda film 'The Kerala Story's big win Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan shared a tweet on the last day that read, "By honouring a film that spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala's image and sowing seeds of communal hatred, the jury of the #NationalFilmAwards has lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar. Kerala, a land that has always stood as a beacon of harmony and resistance against communal forces, has been gravely insulted by this decision. It is not just Malayalis, but everyone who believes in democracy, must raise their voice in defence of truth and the constitutional values we hold dear."
