Couple found dead in home in Bordertown, South Australia
Police made the grim discovery while conducting a welfare check at the home in Bordertown – about 250km east of Adelaide – just after 11pm on Sunday.
A 47-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman were found dead at the property.
They were in a domestic relationship, police have confirmed.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Cath Hilliard told reporters on Monday afternoon that police believed the man had murdered his partner before taking his own life.
'Police discovered the deaths of the individuals after a relative contacted police and requested a welfare check after they couldn't contact them,' she said.

'The man was known police through a previous domestic violence incident earlier in the year, and that involved the deceased woman.
'However, they were no current court imposed restrictions in relation to the individuals preventing any contact between the couple.'
Acting Assistant Commissioner Hilliard said the investigation into the deaths would include the previous domestic violence incident and any other interaction with other government agencies that might have taken place.
She would not say how the couple died and post-mortem examinations would take place on Tuesday.
The couple had children, but they were not in the house at the time,
'It's a tragic circumstance for the family and the community and all emergency responders who attended,
'Domestic abuse is, no longer acceptable for the community or the police.'
Acting Assistant Commissioner Hilliard said the couple had lived and worked in the area, but would not provide further details until the next of kin had been notified.
SA Police said in a statement earlier that no other suspects were be sought in relation to this matter.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
