'Unlike anything we have seen before': Astronomers discover mysterious object firing strange signals at Earth every 44 minutes

Astronomers have discovered a mysterious object flashing strange signals from deep space, and they have no idea what it is.
The object, named ASKAP J1832-0911, spits out pulses of radio waves and X-rays for two minutes straight, once every 44 minutes.
Detected by Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and NASA's Chandra X-ray observatory, the strange repeating signals are currently unexplained — and unravelling this cosmic mystery could reveal new physics, according to the researchers who discovered it. The team published their findings May 28 in the journal Nature.
"This object is unlike anything we have seen before," lead study author Andy Wang, an astronomer at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, said in a statement. "ASKAP J1831-0911 could be a magnetar (the core of a dead star with powerful magnetic fields), or it could be a pair of stars in a binary system where one of the two is a highly magnetised white dwarf (a low-mass star at the end of its evolution)."
"However, even those theories do not fully explain what we are observing," Wang added. "This discovery could indicate a new type of physics or new models of stellar evolution."
ASKAP J1832-0911 is a long-period transient (LPT), a class of rare and extreme astrophysical events that sweep out beams of radio waves like cosmic lighthouses. First discovered in 2022, thus far ten LPTs have been catalogued by astronomers.

Unlike traditional pulsars, which are produced by neutron stars and spit out radio signals every few seconds or milliseconds, LPTs emit pulses at intervals of minutes or hours apart — a period previously thought to be impossible. This has made the cause of the signals, and how they are able to switch on and off at long and regular intervals, a mystery among astronomers.
After discovering the signals using the ASKAP telescope, the researchers turned to the Chandra X-ray observatory (which was coincidentally pointing at the same patch of sky) to double check what they had found. Chandra's observations confirmed ASKAP J1832-0911's presence, while also making the first-ever detection of an LPT in X-rays.

"Discovering that ASKAP J1832-0911 was emitting X-rays felt like finding a needle in a haystack," Wang said. "The ASKAP radio telescope has a wide field view of the night sky, while Chandra observes only a fraction of it. So, it was fortunate that Chandra observed the same area of the night sky at the same time."
The astronomers believe that the detection of an LPT emitting radio waves and X-rays simultaneously could offer them a valuable clue as to what's producing them, as any theory that explains the object must now account for both types of emission.
To assemble more of the puzzle, the researchers suggest that more detections using radio and X-ray telescope pairs should be made.
"Finding one such object hints at the existence of many more," second author Nanda Rea, an astrophysicist at the Catalan Institute for Space Studies in Spain, said in the statement. "The discovery of its transient X-ray emission opens fresh insights into their mysterious nature."

'Is this the year of another caterpillargeddon?' People in northern B.C. are spotting more tent caterpillars
In trees, gardens, and even on sidewalks — people across northern B.C. are spotting dark-coloured, fuzzy caterpillars with little spots on their backs and wondering if another tent caterpillar outbreak is on the horizon. From Prince George to Taylor, people are posting pictures of them on social media, asking if this will be the year the insects return in mass numbers. Chad Wiebe works at the Two Rivers Art Gallery in downtown Prince George and he said he's noticed tent caterpillars dangling from the trees that line the sidewalk in front of the building. "They are a little bit creepy when they are just hanging about and they can get in your hair and fall on you." Dodging tent caterpillars as he's heading into work isn't a new experience for Wiebe, who said he's familiar with the population booms that have plagued the city in the past. "Every time they appear, we end up getting a pressure washer to make sure our house is cleared off," he said. The last caterpillar population boom in the region happened during the spring and summer seasons between 2010 and 2014 — when streets, sidewalks, trees and buildings were covered with the insects. The caterpillars feed on deciduous trees, and build silk tents where they live communally, before cocooning and turning into moths in late summer. Dezene Huber, an entomologist at the University of Northern British Columbia, said they often go unnoticed when they first hatch because they're quite small. "As they grow, we start to see them in these clusters, living in these little tents that they make out of silk." Huber said it's natural for tent caterpillars to experience a population explosion every decade or so but when exactly that will happen is not easy to predict as a lot of factors like bad weather and disease can impact a caterpillar's ability to survive. "When the dice rolls the right way usually you get a big boom in caterpillar numbers and then they get knocked back again," he said. "It depends how these various dice roll and sometimes all the right numbers come up and we end up with a big explosion of them for a few years." Tent caterpillars aren't limited to northern B.C. The city of Edmonton is also currently seeing more tent caterpillars this year. WATCH | Tent caterpillars in Edmonton: Huber recently saw a cluster of western tent caterpillars on a rosebush during his walk to work, but he said he isn't sure if this year will be the start of another outbreak in the region. "I think people are noticing them a bit more right now. We might be heading into an outbreak coming up in the next year or so we'll have to see what happens." Huber said even if there is another tent caterpillar outbreak brewing, they are relatively harmless as most trees are able to survive losing their leaves entirely for a year or two. "Everyone sort of loves to hate them," he said. "No one likes having caterpillar poop dripping on them and sliding around the dead caterpillars, but it is a pretty interesting phenomenon to witness."

Could you see the northern lights over RI, New England tonight? It's possible. See map
The northern lights may be visible over a large swath of New England tonight due to a large geomagnetic storm, possibly even dipping into northern Rhode Island. "The G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm watch remains in effect for tonight, June 1st (EDT), as CME passage continues," the Space Weather Prediction Center said in a 2 p.m. alert on June 1. "There are indications that the coronal mass ejection (CME) passage is weakening, but the solar wind conditions remain elevated, therefore additional periods of G3-G4 (Strong-Severe) levels remain possible. However, we now anticipate that conditions should weaken enough by tomorrow evening, June 2nd (EDT), that G1 (Minor) storm levels is the most likely peak response." The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center prediction map is showing that all of New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont have a chance to see the spectacle tonight, including a large chunk of Massachusetts. The possible view line is just touching Rhode Island, meaning there's a chance that people will see them. The question is, will the weather cooperate? AccuWeather is currently forecasting partly cloudy skies, so if the lights reach it's possible cloud cover will be a problem. The sun is currently at solar maximum, according to NASA, the peak of activity in its natural cycle, which is creating more opportunities to see the northern lights. Here's what to know. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) aurora forecast, the northern lights may reach to Rhode Island tonight, but only in the northern tip of the state. However, odds improve if people make a trip to Massachusetts where much of the state is firmly in the view line, and become even better in northern New England and New York. The northern lights are typically most visible between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. according to NOAA. "Best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10 PM and 2 AM local time)," the said. "These hours of active aurora expand towards evening and morning as the level of geomagnetic activity increases. There may be aurora in the evening and morning but it is usually not as active and therefore, not as visually appealing." As always, dark skies make for better stargazing. "We typically suggest getting away from cities and find a open field or hilltop to lay out under the stars and wait for the show to really peak at the late evening or early morning hours," Massachusetts Institute of Technology Technical Instructor and Observatory Manager Tim Brothers said in a past interview with Wicked Local. He continued, "In New England, heading for a local conservation area or park that keeps lighting off at night is ideal. Another option is a coastline away from the larger cities — the benefit being that the constellation where you will see most of the 'shooting stars.'" Will metro Atlanta and North Georgia see the northern lights from Sunday night into Monday morning? Short answer: It's possible, but not guaranteed. What To Know A solar flare occurred Friday evening with a piece of energy directed at Earth. A G4 level geomagnetic storm began late Saturday night with northern lights visible as far south as New Mexico. The expectation is that the geomagnetic storm remains at the G4 level into Sunday night, which could pull the northern lights as far south as Metro Atlanta and Northern Georgia. The forecast as of Sunday afternoon calls for the Kp index to be at its highest between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. This could be adjusted as the day goes on. We saw another G4 geomagnetic storm a few months after the G5 storm, which caused the northern lights to only be visible to cameras in Metro Atlanta.
