The managing director says Ayr won't require huge summer surgery and will prioritise quality over quantity.
Graeme Mathie insists Ayr United are 'well placed' to bounce back from their play-off disappointment.
The Honest Men fell flat on the big stage as they were knocked out by Partick Thistle on Friday night.
Boss Scott Brown has confessed he will need to recruit 'leaders' to take Ayr to the next level.
Mathie, the Somerset managing director, says the Jags defeat left the club floored. But he is adamant the foundations are already in place ahead of a summer rebuild.
He told the Ayrshire Post: 'We are in a far better place in terms of squad size and quality than we were at this time last year.
'A good core of players are signed for next season and that gives us a platform that means we're well placed to build.
'Everyone clearly felt the disappointment of the way the season ended, and there is no getting away from that.
'It was gutting for all concerned, but it is a sign of the progress being made that we now have a certain level of expectation around this club.
'My job is to ensure we remain level headed about things – whether at high points or the low.'
Mathie added: 'Twice in the last three years we've reached the promotion play-offs in the Championship – the challenge is to take that next step now.
'We need to bounce back from this disappointment but we will.'
Ayr are holding talks with out of contract players this week but it's unlikely there will be the usual summer exodus.
More than a dozen players are under contract and first teamers such as Scott McMann, Dylan Watret, Paddy Reading, Ben Dempsey, Marco Rus, George Oakley and Curtis Main are all signed for next season.
Rising star Watret has triggered an extension in his deal until 2028 following his breakout season, while goalkeeper Liam Russell has also signed on for another year.
It's also expected that Jamie Murphy will agree to stay on and expand his remit to include a coaching role.
The problem goalkeeper position – Ayr used five different players between the sticks last season – is set to focus minds during the summer.
United would ideally like to recruit an experienced number one, while a centre half with top leadership qualities will also head the shopping list.

The winger was the stand-out performer for the Ibrox side during a disappointing campaign at Ibrox Former Rangers loanee Vaclav Cerny appears to have closed the door on the prospect of a permanent move to Ibrox this summer. The Scottish Premiership giants are in the midst of a major overhaul following the US consortium's takeover with a new manager set to be appointed. Former Southampton boss Russell Martin is the frontrunner ahead of Davide Ancelotti with a final decision expect by Rangers' powerbrokers in the coming days. But after a loan campaign that saw Cerny chip in with 18 goals and nine assists, many fans were hoping to see the Czech Republic international make a permanent move to Glasgow with reports suggesting Wolfsburg are demanding £9million for the 27-year-old. But while on international duty, the attacker appears to have put a full stop on his time in Glasgow as he confessed he left with regrets having failed to pick up silverware. He said: "I managed to play a lot of games, almost 60 in one season, which is wonderful. "I had a wonderful relationship with the fans, I think I gave them a lot of nice experiences, just like they gave me. "I'm just sorry I couldn't win anything with Rangers. Celtic and Rangers in talks with clubs over SFA's new system
Architects of the initiative believe it will tackle the shortage of young players featuring in first-team football. The Scottish FA has given clubs the go-ahead to implement these changes from June 16. Talks of partnerships are already underway, with clubs such as Celtic in discussions with Queen's Park, Rangers with Raith Rovers, and Dundee United with Montrose. Recent data from the CIES Observatory shows that St Mirren offered only 0.8 per cent of their first-team minutes to players aged 21 or under. Dundee topped the SPFL Premiership with 24.8 per cent. Concerned by this trend, the governing body, in consultation with clubs, has decided to allow more flexibility for Scottish youngsters aged 16-21 to switch between their parent club and a lower league partner. SFA chief football officer Andy Gould and head of men's elite strategy Chris Docherty, who studied similar systems in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia, convinced clubs of the need for change. "It's an opportunity for clubs to use a system that enhances their chances of getting players into their first team. "At the top end of the game, it gives them a greater opportunity of selling those players and, down the line, there is an opportunity for the national team to get the benefit of that." The new system permits SPFL Premiership or Championship clubs to sign agreements with clubs in League One, League Two, or the Highland and Lowland Leagues. This allows for a maximum of three players eligible for Scotland's national team to be placed on a 'co-operation list.' Unlike loans, these players can freely switch between the parent club and the lower league partner during the league season. The parent clubs will pay the player's full salary, maintain the player's registration, and have the right to recall the player at any time and send another one in their place. The existing loan system remains in place, allowing clubs to use a combination of the two systems to increase the maximum number of players they can take from the same parent outfit from three to five. Scotland face Iceland at Hampden on Friday night with Motherwell captain Lennon Miller, Kieran Bowie of Hibs, and James Wilson of Hearts in the squad, with Docherty citing the trio as a positive development. He said: "Not all of those players will start every World Cup qualifier. "But Steve (Clarke) has called up players like Lennon Miller and James Wilson, now the youngest ever Scotland player, and he has shown clubs in the SPFL that if you put a young player in the first team at a young age and start to develop them, they have a real chance of making it into a Scotland squad. "So I think the national coach, in this case, is sending a signal to clubs that if you develop young players, that will develop the national team and help them as well." The architects of the new system hope that it will provide a competitive edge over others, although the benefits may not be immediately visible.
