
‘A Star Is Born' producer Lynette Howell Taylor elected president of Oscars org
An academy member since 2014, Taylor has served the organization in several high-profile positions, including as vice president and chair of the awards committee. She's also a prolific film producer whose works include 'A Star Is Born' (2018), 'Blue Valentine' and 'The Accountant.' She also produced the 92nd Oscars broadcast. Taylor is now the fifth woman to lead the film academy.
The outgoing president, Yang, was elected to the position in 2022 and served in the role for the maximum of three years.
Kramer said in a statement that Taylor has been a vital part of the board of governors and singled out how she 'revitalized our awards work.' Several officers were also elected by the board, including actor Lou Diamond Phillips as chair of the equity and inclusion committee and producer Jennifer Fox, who will chair the awards committee.

After years of declining ratings, the Oscars have been on an upswing the past few years. March's broadcast, in which 'Anora' won five Oscars, drew some 19.7 million viewers, a slight uptick from the ceremony the year prior, when 'Oppenheimer' dominated. The organization has already announced that Conan O'Brien will return as host in 2026 and has made several big changes for the future, including adding a stunt design award, starting with films released in 2027, and one for casting directors, which goes into effect this year.

Documentaries on sex work, whistlers, aeronauts join Toronto's film festival lineup
TORONTO – Sex workers, champion whistlers and hot air balloon adventurers star in the documentaries bound for the Toronto International Film Festival. Festival organizers say TIFF's non-fiction slate will open with 'The Eyes of Ghana,' from Oscar-winning Halifax director Ben Proudfoot and executive producers Barack and Michelle Obama. Proudfoot's short films won Oscars in 2024 and 2022. He now brings a feature on filmmaker and cinematographer Chris Hesse, who was the personal photographer to Ghana's first president Kwame Nkrumah. TIFF says the film is among 16 world premieres that also include 'Modern Whore,' a look at the sex industry directed by Canada's Nicole Bazuin, and based on the eponymous book by Bazuin and Andrea Werhun. Werhun was a consultant on last year's stripper dramedy 'Anora,' which won best picture at the Oscars and earned the best director trophy for Sean Baker, who executive produced 'Modern Whore.' Other films coming to the fest include John Dower's look at pioneering aeronauts in 'The Balloonists,' Christopher Nelius' examination of competitive whistling in 'Whistle,' and Tasha Van Zandt's deep sea portrait 'A Life Illuminated,' about marine biologist Dr. Edie Widder, an expert in mysterious bioluminescent creatures. And there's the Catholic Church critique 'Nuns vs. the Vatican,' directed by Lorena Luciano and executive produced by Mariska Hargitay and a look at the downfall of a celebrity chef in 'Canceled: The Paula Deen Story,' directed by Billy Corben. The 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival runs Sept. 4 to 14. Other Canadian documentaries include Jamal Burger and Jukan Tateisi's 'Still Single,' Darlene Naponse's 'Aki,' Shane Belcourt's 'Ni-Naadamaadiz: Red Power Rising,' Min Sook Lee's 'There Are No Words,' Michèle Stephenson's 'True North' and Peter Mettler's ambitious 'While the Green Grass Grows: A Diary in Seven Parts,' described as a a seven-part audio-visual diary. International docs also include Raoul Peck's George Orwell film, 'Orwell: 2+2=5,' a look at the '1984' author's legacy that debuted at Cannes. Previously announced docs include festival opener 'John Candy: I Like Me,' 'Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery,' 'Degrassi: Whatever It Takes,' 'EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert' and 'You Had to Be There: How the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution.' A former Rolling Stone says the Met has his stolen guitar. The museum disputes it
LONDON (AP) — It's only rock 'n' roll, but it's messy. A guitar once played by two members of the Rolling Stones is at the center of a dispute between the band's former guitarist Mick Taylor and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The 1959 Gibson Les Paul was donated to the Met as part of what the New York museum calls 'a landmark gift of more than 500 of the finest guitars from the golden age of American guitar making.' The donor is Dirk Ziff, a billionaire investor and guitar collector. When the Met announced the gift in May, Taylor thought he recognized the guitar, with its distinctive 'starburst' finish, as an instrument he last saw in 1971, when the Stones were recording the album 'Exile on Main St.' at Keith Richards' rented villa in the south of France. In the haze of drugs and rock 'n' roll that pervaded the sessions, a number of instruments went missing, believed stolen. Now, Taylor and his team believe it has reappeared. The Met says provenance records show no evidence the guitar ever belonged to Taylor. 'This guitar has a long and well-documented history of ownership,' museum spokesperson Ann Ballis said. Taylor's partner and business manager, Marlies Damming, said the Met should make the guitar 'available for inspection.' 'An independent guitar expert should be able to ascertain the guitar's provenance one way or the other,' she said in a statement to The Associated Press. While its ownership is contested, there's no disputing the instrument's starring role in rock history. It was owned in the early 1960s by Keith Richards, who played it during the Rolling Stones' first appearance on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' in 1964. The Met says that performance 'ignited interest in this legendary model.' The guitar – nicknamed the 'Keithburst' – was also played by guitar legends Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Taylor says he got it from Richards in 1967, two years before he joined the Stones, replacing original member Brian Jones. Jones died in 1969. Taylor left the band in 1974, reuniting with them for the Stones' 50th anniversary tour in 2012-2013. Jeff Allen, who was Taylor's manager and publicist for decades from the 1990s, said Taylor 'told me he got it as a present from Keith,' and also mentioned the theft. 'Mick did tell me that the guitar solo that he became quite famous for, on 'Can't You Hear Me Knocking,' was with the Les Paul that got stolen,' Allen said. The Met's records say the Les Paul was owned by Richards until 1971, when it was acquired by record producer and manager Adrian Miller, who died in 2006. Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week. The guitar has changed hands several times since then, and reappeared twice in public. It was put up for auction by Christie's in 2004, when it failed to sell. Ziff bought it in 2016, and loaned it to the Met in 2019 for an exhibition titled 'Play it Loud: Instruments of Rock & Roll.' It's unclear what will happen next.
