Russell Martin's Rangers rant blows the mind of body language expert who dishes out one-of-a-kind verdict
The Ibrox gaffer filleted his players in the aftermath of their Motherwell draw as they dropped points in the season opener Russell Martin ripped into his Rangers players as part of an astonishing TV blast after dropping points at Motherwell. It was another season opener for the Light Blues where they've failed to claim maximum points and the irate boss didn't hold back in his assessment of his squad as he promised to weed out the slackers and called out egos within his group. In the build-up to facing Viktoria Plzen in the crucial Champions League third qualifying round first leg showdown at Ibrox, the former Southampton boss told the media that his rant wasn't an attack on any individuals and for him honesty is the best policy. His post-match comments grabbed the headlines with his actions discussed by punters and debated wider on the likes of football radio shows as pundits, ex-pros and fans gave their views. Now body language expert Darren Stanton, known as the human lie detector, has delivered his verdict on the footage. Speaking to OLBG, he insisted that the Rangers boss was 'probably the most authentic and direct' manager he's assessed and says his words came from the heart and were genuine. He said: 'He wants to lay the law down and those that don't want to play ball in his own words can walk and sometimes you've just got to pull a scary face in life. 'It's nice to be nice but you've also got to stand up for yourself and defend your values and say what you think is wrong. 'If the fans get behind him and support his strategy to go in there and start kicking some arse then I do think heads will roll but it's all about leverage. 'No one person is bigger than the team, or at least that's the idea isn't it, so he has to control the framing and the narrative because at the end of the day he's the manager or the coach, especially if there's one or two players who run against that. 'I think out of all the managers I've been asked to assess, I think Martin is the most forthright and probably most authentic and direct I've seen in some time. He looks like the sort of man that's not going to suffer fools gladly at Rangers.' He continued: 'There's a lot of anger. His eyes are pulled together and pulled down. 'Martin was looking down and left for most of the interview, if you notice, which is what we call auditory internal dialogue. This happens in a split second. 'He's thinking very carefully about what he's saying but it does tell me that he's been genuinely authentic. 'He's speaking from the heart. If he was trying to manage the risk of what he's saying to the media we would see some bilateral shoulder shrugs, which is where one only shoulder moves. 'He seems genuine because he did lots of double shoulder shrugs. He's not trying to mask anything.' Kieran Dowell accuses Rangers of sleepwalking as home truths hurt in fight to rescue Ibrox career
There has been a fierce backlash following the opening day draw for the Light Blues at Fir Park Kieran Dowell says Rangers' Fir Park flops deserved their Russell Martin rollicking. And the midfielder admits certain Ibrox stars are fighting for their futures after a wake-up call at Motherwell. Gers slipped up on the opening day of the Premiership season for the third consecutive year on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against The Steelmen. After leading through James Tavernier's header, they produced an insipid display and the home side got a deserved late equaliser through Emmanuel Longelo. Afterwards, Martin slated his players' attitudes - accusing them of being ego-driven and slipping into 'self-preservation' mode. He warned those who don't want to work for him that they'll be left behind. Dowell, who is having a Rangers revival under the new boss after it looked like his days at Ibrox were numbered, says the flak was justified. The 27-year-old believes the dressing-down was needed because players have failed under different managers prior to Martin's arrival. When asked if Martin's criticism was tough to hear, Dowell said: 'Yeah, but it was a few home truths. We had a good start to the game and didn't put it to bed. 'We almost sleep-walked into conceding that equaliser and probably deserved it in the end. 'Do the players have a lot to prove? 100 percent. Look, obviously it hasn't been the most successful period for the club and that's down to us as players. 'We've had a few managers now and it's up to us to prove it if we want to be at this club moving forward. Saturday was a big blow for the players, it's a reality check for us.' Celtic transfer news as Balikwisha timeline emerges and Ambrosino gets appraisal
Brendan Rodgers has made it no secret that he wants to bolster his forward options before the window slams shut on September 1 Celtic will reportedly ramp up their attempts to sign long-term target Michel Ange Balikwisha if they are successful in qualifying for the Champions League. The Royal Antwerp star has been heavily linked with the Hoops inside the past 12 months, with Brendan Rodgers on the hunt for a new wide player following Nicolas Kuhn 's £17million exit to Como. And reports in Belgium claim that while he is still on their radar, theParkhead giants champions may have to negotiate the two-legged tie to get into the revamped group stage of Europe's premiere competition before they can make a move for the ex Belgium youth international. Celtic will find out their opponents for the crunch tie in Monday's draw in Nyon, Switzerland. The report also insists that Southampton have made no formal approach to land Baliwkisha, despite links with the 24-year-old. Meanwhile, Celtic have been told exactly what reported target Giueseppe Ambrosino can bring to Rodgers' attacking arsenal. The Hoops have been linked with a move for the Napoli youngster, who's future with the Serie A champions is unclear after spending the whole of last season out on loan with Frosinone in Serie B. As well as Celtic, Serie A duo Cremonese and Cagliari and second tier sides Bari and Pescara are also said to hold an interest in the forward, who is into the final year of his contract in Naples. And according to former Napoli number two Nicolo Frustalupi - who worked with the 21-year-old during his short tenure as assistant manager to Walter Mazzari at the Diego Armando Maradona between November 2023 and February 2024 - Ambrosino ticks all the boxes as an all-round striker. Speaking to tuttomercatoweb, he said: "One of his best qualities, in my opinion, is his shot: it's powerful and accurate. "It's truly his strongest asset. For a centre forward, he's also very technical: he communicates well with his teammates, he's good at laying off and moving the team forward. He's good in the air, especially when it comes to finishing. "He's not exceptional at flicking on or in aerial duels to provide a point of support, but when it comes to finishing with his head, he's effective. In the Primavera, he was also very good at running forward."
