IUML enlists Panakkad family support for Shoukath's campaign

The Hindu2 days ago

In a bid to quell criticism that the Panakkad Syed Shihab Thangal family was keeping their distance from Aryadan Shoukath over his past remarks against them, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has enlisted the family's support to campaign for the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate in Nilambur.
IUML district president Syed Abbasali Shihab Thangal, the youngest brother of the late Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal and current party supremo Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal, campaigned for Mr. Shoukath in Nilambur on Tuesday.
Criticism had emerged from certain quarters about the absence of any Panakkad Syed family member at the UDF's inaugural convention in Nilambur on Monday, in which most top leaders of the front had attended.
Despite prominent IUML leaders like P.K. Kunhalikutty, P.V. Abdul Wahab, M.K. Muneer, M.P. Abdussamad Samadani, P.M.A. Salam, and K.P.A. Majeed attending the convention, the absence of any Thangal sparked a debate among UDF critics.
Panakkad family's seniormost member and IUML State President Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal is presently in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, as part of a special delegation for Haj pilgrimage. 'When I visited Panakkad, Thangal called me from Makkah and wished me luck, assuring me of his prayers for my victory,' said Mr. Shoukath.
Mr. Abbasali took part in a rally at Munderi in Pothukal panchayat along with Mr. Shoukath and other IUML leaders such as P.V. Abdul Wahab, MP, and P.K. Basheer, MLA. Addressing the rally, Mr. Abbasali said that the voters of Nilambur were being given a golden chance to reject the Left Democratic Front (LDF)'s alleged misrule in the State.
Forecasting a landmark win for the UDF candidate, Mr. Abbasali assured that he would stand firmly behind Mr. Shoukath until the election's culmination. 'Even CPI(M) supporters will switch sides to vote for Mr. Shoukath, reflecting the people's desire for a change,' he said.
Apart from Mr. Wahab and Mr. Basheer, Congress State working president A.P. Anil Kumar, MA, P.C. Vishnunath, MLA, Shafi Parambil, MP, M. Vincent, MLA, Anvar Sadath, MLA, Rahul Mamkootathil, MLA, Muslim Youth League general secretary P.K. Firos, district Congress president V.S. Joy and District Panchayat vice president Ismail Moothedam addressed the rally.

Saudi Arabia: Indian pilgrims perform Wuquf-e-Arafat

Riyadh [Saudi Arabia], June 5 (ANI): Indian pilgrims joined millions of others in Saudi Arabia today to perform Wuquf-e-Arafat, the core ritual of Hajj pilgrimage, the Embassy of India in Riyadh shared on Thursday. The Indian Embassy wrote on X, 'Indian pilgrims join millions of other pilgrims today at Arafat to perform Wuquf-e-Arafat, the core ritual of Haj.' In a video message, Consul General Fahad Suri said, 'On this blessed day of Arafat, I extend my heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all the pilgrims gathered in Arafat, the pinnacle of the Hajj journey. These five sacred days spent in Meena, Arafat and Muzalifa are a time of deep reflection and devotion and form the core elements of Hajj. I am pleased to share that all pilgrims from India have safely arrived in Arafat and are currently engaged in prayers and supplications. Comprehensive arrangements have been made by Indian Hajj Mission in coordination with concerned Saudi authorities and agencies for the safe and smooth movement of pilgrims right from their transfer to Arafat, their stay here and further movements for Musalifa and Mina. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its authorities, particularly the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, all concerned agencies and all service providers for their tireless efforts in facilitating a safe and spiritually fulfilling Hajj. Wishing all of you a successful Hajj and a blessed Eid-ul-Adha. Hajj ma brur, hajj ma bruk, Eid Mubarak.' India and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia enjoy close friendly relations reflecting the centuries old economic and socio-cultural ties. The annual Hajj pilgrimage is an important component of India-Saudi Arabia bilateral relations. During PM Modi's visit to Saudi Arabia earlier this year, the MEA noted in a previous statement that the Indian side had expressed its appreciation to the Saudi side for the continuing welfare of around 2.7 million Indian nationals residing in the Kingdom, reflecting the strong people- to-people bonds and immense goodwill that exists between the two nations. The Indian side also congratulated Saudi Arabia for successfully holding the Haj pilgrimage in 2024 and expressed its appreciation for the excellent coordination between the two countries in facilitating Indian Haj and Umrah pilgrims. Anvar continues tirade against Satheesan

All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) State convener P.V. Anvar continued his tirade against United Democratic Front (UDF) chairman V.D. Satheesan on Thursday (June 5), reiterating that the UDF would not win the Nilambur byelection as long as Mr. Satheesan remained at the helm. He said 'two Pinarayi Vijayans' were facing the election in Nilambur. 'Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M. Swaraj is the spokesperson of Pinarayism, and the UDF candidate is a supporter of Pinarayism,' he added. Mr. Anvar credited himself with highlighting the problems and sufferings of the settler farmer communities living in the hills of Kerala, particularly Nilambur. Anvar claimed he was convinced by the people of Nilambur to enter the fray. 'Unlike transient politicians, I will stay with the ordinary people of Nilambur. That is why they want me by their side,' he said.

Govt. slammed for last-minute scrapping of Friday's Bakrid holiday

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and several Muslim organisations have protested against the government decision to revoke the Bakrid holiday on Friday. The government has shifted the holiday to Saturday as Muslims in the State are celebrating Bakrid on Saturday. IUML State general secretary P.M.A. Salam has demanded that the government declare a separate holiday on Saturday rather than scrapping the previously announced holiday on Friday. Mr. Salam pointed out that Friday would be of significance too, as Muslims celebrating Bakrid on Saturday would be fasting on Friday, making it essential to retain the holiday on both days. IUML district president Syed Abbasali Shihab Thangal and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president A.P. Anil Kumar too demanded that the government change its decision to revoke Friday's holiday. Wisdom Islamic Organisation general secretary T.K. Ashraf too criticised the government move saying that it would put many professionals in difficulty. 'We have been demanding at least three days holidays for two Id celebrations. If not possible, at least having two days off will allow those working in distant districts to travel home, celebrate Id and return to work,' he said. Mr. Ashraf expressed concerns that the government's last-minute decision to revoke the declared holiday on Friday would be seen as disregard for the Muslim community's celebrations, particularly since it is the day of the significant Arafa fast.
