Barcelona goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck sidelined with head injury

New York Times15-02-2025
Barcelona goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck has been sidelined after sustaining a head injury in training.
Barcelona confirmed the 25-year-old did not experience a loss of consciousness when she sustained the injury.
Her club did not provide an exact timeframe for her return but confirmed she will miss Sunday's Liga F fixture against Madrid CFF while she follows head injury protocols.

'The Blaugrana goalkeeper will follow the established return to activity protocol in these cases before returning to the pitch and will be sidelined for the next match,' a Barcelona statement on Saturday read.
Roebuck has featured twice in Liga F this season, having joined Barcelona from Manchester City in the summer. Her Barcelona debut in December marked her return to first-team action after recovering from a stroke.
The England international announced in March she had suffered a left occipital infarct but had avoided lasting damage to her brain function and vision.
She did not feature for former club Manchester City during the 2023-24 campaign and her Barcelona debut against Real Betis on December 7 marked her maiden first-team outing since City's 2-1 loss to Manchester United on May 21 2023. She called her return to action a 'dream'.
Roebuck also started Barcelona's surprise 2-1 loss to Levante on February 1.
Cata Coll is Barcelona's first-choice goalkeeper, while Gemma Font has also featured three times in Liga F this season.

Portugal teammate, EPL rival Bernardo Silva gives heartfelt message at Diogo Jota's funeral

Bernardo Silva, a Portugal teammate of Diogo Jota and Manchester City star, called Jota's tragic death 'a very sad moment for all of us' and said 'he'll remain in our hearts forever' in an interview before an emotional funeral in Portugal on Saturday, according to ESPN. Silva, who overlapped with Jota on the national team and played for the rival of the late star's Liverpool team in the Premier League, recalled eating meals together and playing alongside one another, ESPN reported while citing Silva's interview with TVI. 5 Bernardo Silva is pictured at the funeral for Diogo Jota and Andre Silva on July 5. His passion, will and determination allowed him to succeed in life and have a brilliant career. More important than that, as a person … the memories that remain … Jota will remain in our hearts forever. He will always be present at all breakfasts, lunches, dinners, national team gatherings, PlayStation or card games. 'It's a very tough episode for all of us, because we spent a lot of time together. Chelsea add Gittens to glut of attacking talent

Jamie Gittens is set to join Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund (LLUIS GENE) Chelsea added England under-21 international winger Jamie Gittens to their array of attacking talent on Saturday from Borussia Dortmund. The Blues will reportedly pay an initial £48.5 million ($66 million) for the 20-year-old, who was in Chelsea's academy as a youth player, with a further £3.5 million in add-ons. Advertisement Gittens eventually moved to Manchester City's academy before signing for Dortmund in 2022. He made 107 appearances for the German giants, scoring 17 goals, 12 of which came in the Bundesliga and Champions League last season. "It's a great feeling to join such a big club as Chelsea," said Gittens. "I can't wait to learn from everyone in the team and to push myself to the max here. It's an amazing feeling." Gittens became Chelsea's fifth signing of another big-spending summer, joining forwards Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, midfielder Dario Essugo and defender Mamadou Sarr. Advertisement Brazilian rising star Estevao Willian, 18, will also join the Premier League giants, in a deal agreed last year, after scoring against Chelsea in Palmerias' 2-1 Club World Cup quarter-final defeat on Friday. Gittens, though, will not be eligible to feature in Chelsea's semi-final against Fluminense on Tuesday or the final should the Blues progress. "Jamie Gittens' career exemplifies the development of top talents at BVB," said Dortmund CEO Lars Ricken. "We discovered him very early, signed him almost at no cost, continuously developed him in our youth academy, and provided him with playing time at the highest professional level. Advertisement "Jamie has repaid that trust with dedication, performance, and goals. His transfer back to his home country would be highly valuable for us." Chelsea are under pressure to recoup some of their transfer spend in sales over the coming months. On Friday, they were fined 31 million euros by UEFA for two breaches of financial sustainability rules, with a further 60 million euros suspended as part of a four-year settlement agreement. Moreover, Chelsea, who have qualified for the Champions League, cannot register any new players for European competition unless they earn more from transfer sales than they spend on new signings. kca/pb
