
Nipah resurfaces in Malappuram, 42-year-old woman tests positive
Kozhikode: Nipah virus infection has resurfaced in Malappuram after an eight-month gap, with a 42-year-old woman from Valanchery municipality testing positive. The confirmation came from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.
The woman, a resident of ward 2 in Valanchery, is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Perinthalmanna.Health minister Veena George rushed to the district and chaired a high-level meeting at the collectorate. She said the woman first sought treatment at a private clinic for fever on April 25 and was admitted to the hospital on May 1.All 21 samples taken from seven of her high-risk contacts, including close relatives, have tested negative. The state medical board has recommended administering monoclonal antibodies to the patient upon receiving permission from the hospital ethics committee.A three-kilometre containment zone has been declared around the area where the infection was reported. District collector V R Vinod announced nine wards in four local bodies as containment zones: Wards 1–4 of Valanchery municipality, wards 9, 11, and 12 of Marakkara panchayat, and wards 6 and 17 of Edayur panchayat.Twenty-five committees have been formed to implement the Nipah protocol, with intense contact tracing underway. All identified contacts, whether high or low risk, will be under 21-day observation.Efforts are ongoing to trace the source of the infection. Following reports of a cat's death in the area, the animal husbandry department will test samples. A fever survey will be conducted in the affected municipality and nearby panchayats.The minister advised residents to remain vigilant, wear masks, use sanitizers, and avoid unnecessary hospital visits. Masks and sanitizers will be mandatory at the upcoming "Ente Keralam" exhibition in Kottakkal.The last reported Nipah case in Malappuram was in Sept 2023, when a 24-year-old youth from Thiruvali succumbed to the disease.

T'puram: Health minister Veena George announced the launch of 'Blood Bank Traceability Application' – a centralized software to provide real-time information on the availability of safe and suitable blood units across the state. As part of this initiative, a portal is being developed to allow the public to accurately check blood availability. The govt aims to make this portal accessible to the public by the end of the year. Once operational, information from blood banks will be readily available from anywhere, the minister said in a statement. To ensure the availability of blood, blood storage units or blood banks have been set up at all hospitals with maternity services, starting from community health centres. An advanced digital blood bag traceability system was implemented to monitor blood from collection to transfusion, while Kerala Rare Blood Donor Registry was launched for rare blood types. This is in addition to the new traceability software. PATHANAMTHITTA: Health Minister Veena George has assured full government support, including legal assistance, to the family of Ranjitha G Nair, a nurse from Pullad, Pathanamthitta, who lost her life in the Air India Boeing crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday. The minister, who cut short her by-election campaign in Malappuram to visit the grieving family, met Ranjitha's elderly mother, Thulasi, who is battling cancer, and her two children, Induchoodan and Idhika. 'This is a devastating loss for the family. The government will stand by them in every possible way,' said Veena George during her visit. Ranjitha, who had been on leave from her post as a nursing officer at Kozhencherry District Hospital to work abroad, was the sole breadwinner for her family. According to the minister, the victim's body will be handed over after a possible DNA identification in Ahmedabad. Veena George assured that efforts were being made to expedite the process and bring the body home as soon as possible. Fake doctor booked for selling expired drugs from clinic in Kozhikode
T'puram: The drugs control department has initiated legal action against an alleged fake doctor in Kozhikode who provided expired medicines from his clinic. The raid at Marad medical centre, operating under Kozhikode Corporation, was conducted following a complaint from a patient in palliative care. Legal action was taken against the owner of the establishment EK Kannan. Health minister Veena George said that strict action will be taken against those selling expired medicines. "As using expired medicines can lead to serious health issues, consumers should be vigilant. If any pharmacies or clinics are found providing expired medicines, it should be reported to the drugs control department on toll-free number 1800 425 3182. Strict measures will be enforced," the minister said, adding that further inspections will be intensified in the coming days. During the inspection at the Marad clinic, a large quantity of modern medicine was found stored for sale without any documentation. Most of the medicines discovered at the establishment were expired. It was found that Kannan was treating patients with these expired medicines.
