A tapestry of art and history unfolds in Hyderabad
The exhibition itself is a vivid mosaic of India's visual legacy — from the lyrical minimalism of Gaitonde and the firebrand modernism of M.F. Husain to the intricate brilliance of Tanjore panelsand silver filigree furniture. Yet it was the voice of Pillai that gave this tapestry its historical heartbeat, inviting viewers to look not just at art, but through it.
In a luminous talk titled 'Art as History', historian and author Manu S. Pillai cast a spell over a rapt audience, weaving stories of forgotten queens, colonial encounters, and cultural awakenings. 'Art,' he said, 'is more than an object of beauty — it is an archive of longing, identity, and time.' With his characteristic wit and erudition, Pillai illuminated how brushstrokes can echo dynastic pride, rebellion, and even whispered defiance.
Sangeeta Abhay's work draws deeply from Indic spiritual traditions, and presents the lotus not simply as a botanical form but as a cosmic bloom—an axis of creation. Ganapati Hegde's trademark humour takes centre stage in the artwork titled ' In a Meeting'. A green frog lounges nonchalantly on a red sofa, mobile phone in hand, surrounded by dense tropical flora- a playful critique of modern life's intrusion into the natural world. Reghunatha Naidu brings to his canvases a sense of devotion, balance, and reverence, which reflects in his'Kodanda Rama'. A rare painting by S.M. Pandit, 'The Descent of Ganga' stands out in the show. Inspired by the legend of King Bhagiratha, who performed years of penance to bring Ganga to Earth and grant salvation to his ancestors, S.M. Pandit masterfully narrates this mythological episode through his art.
'These artists may have remained under-celebrated in the shadow of more prominent names, but they are masters in their own right,' says Gitanjali Maini, Founder and Managing Director of Gallery G. Ramayana, Mahabharata, Panchatantra turn into audiobooks: Audible teams up with Amar Chitra Katha to retell timeless tales
Audio storytelling platform Audible has partnered with iconic comic book publisher Amar Chitra Katha to release a series of audiobooks featuring epics and heritage stories from the latter's vast catalogue. Founded in 1967 by Anant Pai, Amar Chitra Katha is one of India's oldest comic book companies, widely credited with opening a window into a world where gods, kings, and heroes come alive through colourful illustrations and compelling storytelling. Today, the publisher boasts a library of over 600 titles in 20 languages, covering mythology, history, fables, folklore, and classical Indian literature — and sells over five million copies annually. The English-language audiobook collection, now available on Audible, features 111 epics and folktales based on some of Amar Chitra Katha's most beloved titles. Highlights include the Ramayana series, a riveting retelling of Lord Rama's exile, Sita's abduction, and the climactic war against Ravana, and the Mahabharata series, which narrates the story of the Kurukshetra war through the lives of Krishna, Arjuna, Draupadi, Bhishma, Karna, and more. The popular Panchatantra series, which features timeless fables offering life lessons through stories of kings, sages, and animals, has also been adapted into engaging audio narratives. Just in time for Shravan, Audible has also released the Mahadeva series, which explores mystical tales of Lord Shiva and his divine family, including Parvati and Ganesha. 'For decades, Amar Chitra Katha has brought Indian stories to life through art and text. Through this collaboration with Audible, we're taking that legacy into a new dimension where voice, sound, and emotion add a rich new layer to these tales,' said Reena Puri, executive editor of Amar Chitra Katha. 'Listening to these stories is like returning to the roots of Indian storytelling, when tales were passed down orally through generations.' Actor Rana Daggubati, who is also an investor in Amar Chitra Katha, echoed the sentiment: 'This creative alliance with Audible brings them to life through voice in languages children grow up with, think in, and carry in their hearts. While the audiobooks are currently available in English, Hindi versions are slated for release in September 2025, followed by editions in Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, and Telugu in 2026.

Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri announces release date of new movie about Bengal; social media says, ‘Waiting for Manipur files'
Bollywood filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri has announced the release date of his new film, The Bengal Files. The movie, based on communal violence in the 1940s, is all set to be released on September 5. 'They turned Bengal's wisdom into ashes. The land that once lit up Bharat's soul with Indic renaissance… was silenced by communal hate,' the director wrote on social media, not revealing the identity of 'they'. 'The streets of Bengal were drowned in blood. India forgot. But we remembered. And now the world will know,' Agnihotri wrote while announcing the release date. Social media users, especially those from West Bengal, reacted to the announcement. 'Tell your boss that they will lose again in Bengal,' came from one Bengali user. One user claimed, 'The movie was called Delhi Files earlier. When BJP came to power in Delhi, the name change happened.' 'We are good here. Can you please stop doing this Publicity Stunt?' wrote another Bengali. One of them wrote, 'B-Grade movies ka C-Grade director…' 'How about the Gujarat files? It could solve why a popular public leader does not give interviews for 2 decades!' commented another. Another remarked, 'Waiting for Manipur files.' One user predicted that it would be a 'Maha Flop communal movie'. Another called Agnihotri 'The film director from WhatsApp University'. Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri is no stranger to controversy. In October 2013, he tweeted, 'What makes NANO the SAFEST car for Women. THERE IS SIMPLY NO WAY TO GET GANG R*PED IN HERE.' Earlier in 2025, he reacted to the Samay Raina controversy and compared it to Kashmiri Pandits 'getting lynched'. Samay Raina 'must have experienced how it feels when people who don't agree with you come to lynch you', he wrote. Vivek Agnihotri's film The Kashmir Files (2022) became a massive box office success. However, it faced criticism for showing communal violence in an allegedly biased manner. Kashmir politicians like Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti slammed the film. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called it 'false propaganda'. Agnihotri sent her a legal notice seeking an apology. Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid called it a 'propaganda, vulgar movie'. ITFoK 2026 to be held from January 25 to February 1
The 16th edition of the International Theatre Festival of Kerala (ITFoK) will take place from January 25 to February 1, 2026. The announcement was made by Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian during the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi awards ceremony recently. Renowned theatre director and educator Abhilash Pillai has been appointed as the Festival Director for ITFoK 2026. This marks his fourth term in the role, having previously led the festival in 2009, 2010, and 2017. A distinguished figure in Indian theatre, Mr. Pillai has held leadership roles in several festivals both in India and abroad. A graduate of the School of Drama, Thrissur, he pursued his post-graduation from the National School of Drama, Delhi, and advanced theatre studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA), London. He also received specialised training from leading directors at London's prestigious Orange Tree Theatre. He currently serves as the Director of the School of Drama and Fine Arts, Thrissur. He is also a recipient of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award and several other accolades. Joining Mr. Pillai in the festival directorate are Anamika Haksar (Acclaimed director and theatre activist); Ruwanthie de Chickera (Sri Lankan theatre director); Sreejith Ramanan and M.G. Jyotish (notable Malayalam theatre practitioners and educators). To further elevate the artistic and curatorial standards of the festival, a high-profile advisory committee has been constituted with senior theatre persons Ratan Thiyam, M.K. Raina, Anuradha Kapur and Prof. B. Ananthakrishnan. Akademi secretary Karivellur Murali said that preparations for the 2026 edition are already under way, guided by the vision and expertise of this newly formed team.
