BMW's Imminent 2026 Price Increases Won't Affect Every Model
If you want a 2026 BMW, the time to buy one is now. On July 1, 2025, the German automaker will be increasing prices of its 2026 models, according to Cars Direct. Depending on the model, you could be paying up to $2,500 more from July, with an increase of up to 3% on selected models. Although it's easy to assume these price hikes are a result of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, the report suggests this isn't the case. Instead, BMW suggests this is a more usual increase that takes inflation into account. So, which models are impacted by the July price increase? BMW's X5 M and X6 M Competitions will be $2,500 more expensive from July, which represents the biggest increase in dollars - but not necessarily the biggest increase percentage-wise. While the MSRP for the hottest X5 is $127,200 now, it will rise to $129,700. The X6 M is currently listed for $132,100, so will go for $134,600 once the increase takes effect. Fortunately, more modest increases await BMWs at the more affordable end of the scale. The cheapest BMW 4 Series will be $1,100 pricier; it currently starts at $51,500. The same $1,100 increase will apply to the base BMW Z4. The six-cylinder Z4 M40i, which will remain in production for longer than expected, may receive a slightly higher price bump. A few days ago, the pricing of the 2026 BMW M3 was leaked, and it's going to be $2,380 more expensive than before, now reaching $78,400. This price excludes the destination charge. The quickest M3 Competition with xDrive all-wheel drive will cost $87,700 before destination charges. Despite this increase, the base M3 is still a lot cheaper than the 2025 Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance, which starts at $86,050. Not every 2026 BMW will see a price hike in July. All EVs are excluded, along with the M2 and any 2025 models. Furthermore, the cheapest new BMW currently costs $39,600, and that's for the 228 Gran Coupe. Even a relatively small increase would mean that there are no more new BMWs for below $40k. However, the 2026 Gran Coupe will also be excluded from the price jump. On the whole, it appears BMW has done a decent job of mitigating the effects of tariffs. We know that BMW, along with fellow German automakers Volkswagen and Mercedes, are in talks with Washington to reach a potential tariff deal. Volkswagen Details 2026 Model Year Updates Ahead Of August Arrival
Volkswagen has announced all the updates for its 2026 lineup, with some 2026 models due to arrive in showrooms in August. Since most models were all-new or significantly refreshed over the last two years, the 2026 updates introduce a few refinements and additional equipment to the VW range. Let's take a closer look at what's new for 2026, starting with the brand's SUV range. The smallest and most affordable VW crossover underwent a comprehensive refresh for the 2025 model year, so for 2026, VW has elected only to add some more equipment. The Taos now gets standard rear-seat pretensioners, while a mid-model year change will see the introduction of upgraded 15-watt wireless charging. Range-topping SEL models now get an upgraded sound system with eight speakers. An all-new Tiguan was introduced for the 2025 model year, featuring a fresh look and a more tech-heavy interior than before. For 2026, the main change is the introduction of the SEL R-Line Turbo, which gets a more powerful 268-horsepower turbocharged engine, up from 201 hp in the other Tiguan models. VW has also updated its Travel Assist and assistant lane change systems; this applies to all trims. Very little has changed for VW's largest SUV models in the USA for 2026. Buyers going for the SE with Technology trim and above now get a factory-installed HomeLink mirror. The Peak Edition, SEL, and SEL Premium R-Line are the other trims benefitting from this change. VW has delayed some of its EV plans, but the ID.4 continues as the brand's sole electric SUV for the 2026 model year. S Plus trims will get a new HomeLink mirror, but VW says a mid-model-year update in 2026 is on the way, when new features will be added to the crossover. No information has been shared on the just yet, following its launch for the 2025 model year, but information on potential upgrades will be announced at a later stage. As with the Taos, rear-seat pretensioners will be standard on 2026 Jettas. The SE gets a standard sunroof, wireless charging is upgraded to 15 w, and SEL variants receive an upgraded eight-speaker sound system. After losing its manual gearbox and getting an updated infotainment system for 2025, there are no major changes for the 2026 Golf GTI. The Golf R underwent similar updates last year, but it's now available with a new exterior color called Graphite Grey Metallic. We expect the manufacturer to share pricing for 2026 models imminently, given that many of them will start arriving in August. The impact of tariffs could come into play here, as VW only promised to freeze pricing of new cars until the end of May. With that freeze now behind us, buyers may be seeing some unwelcome price hikes for 2026, and given how minimal the 2026 MY changes are, it may be a smart move to get a 2025 VW while you still can. Ford Bronco, Bronco Sport missed top safety ratings for this reason
The Ford Bronco and Ford Bronco Sport SUVs failed to meet the marginal ratings to qualify for a top safety pick in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's latest safety ratings, with the institute noting there is a heightened risk for head and neck injuries in the rear seat of the Bronco Sport. On June 10, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety — a nonprofit group owned by auto insurers with the purpose of reducing injuries from car crashes — said it tested nine vehicles and awarded six models from four different brands a 2025 Top Safety Pick+ award. Three of the vehicles tested — the Volkswagen Taos, Ford Bronco and Bronco Sport — did not earn a top safety ranking, rather came as "adequate," due to subpar performance in one or more of the required tests, the institute said in its findings. The crash tests showed both Broncos put rear seat passengers at an elevated risk of chest injuries. The Taos got inadequate results in the front crash test and for its headlights and pedestrian crash avoidance system. A spokesperson from Volkswagen did not immediately respond to inquiries for comment on the results. Ford Motor Co. spokesman Mike Levine emailed the following statement to the Detroit Free Press: "The 2025 Bronco and Bronco Sport meet or exceed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) regulatory requirements. Both Bronco and Bronco Sport have earned overall 5-star NHTSA New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) ratings, and Bronco is currently the only vehicle in its segment to achieve a five-star overall vehicle score in NHTSA's testing." The insurance institute said to qualify for either Top Safety Pick+ or the lower-tier Top Safety Pick award this year, vehicles need good ratings in the small overlap front crash test. That test simulates a crash where a small portion of the front of the vehicle impacts another vehicle or barrier. Also, vehicles must get a good rating in updated side tests, an acceptable or good rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention evaluation and acceptable or good-rated headlights across all trim levels. The institute said getting an acceptable rating in its updated moderate overlap front test is enough to qualify for Top Safety Pick, but a good rating is required to earn Top Safety Pick+. The moderate overlap test simulates a head-on collision where the vehicle's front overlaps 40% of a stationary vehicle's width at 40 mph. Its purpose is to measure rear-seat occupant protection. The 2025 models that did receive the Top Safety Pick+ ranking were: Hyundai Elantra, Kia K4 and Toyota Prius, all small cars; the Hyundai Sonata midsize car, the Toyota bZ4X electric small SUV, and the Nissan Murano midsize SUV. The institute said for some vehicles the Top Safety Pick+ award applies only to models built after the date when the manufacturer made improvements to rear occupant protection. For example, the award applies to Elantras built after October 2024, Sonatas built after November 2024 and K4s built after January 2025. The bZ4X award is for vehicles built after December 2024, when the headlights on its XLE trim were changed to the current good-rated ones. The insurance institute report said new ratings also are available for the Ford Bronco, Ford Bronco Sport and Volkswagen Taos, but "these models did not earn awards due to inadequate performance in one or more of the required tests." "The Bronco was disqualified from contention because of marginal ratings for its headlights, pedestrian front crash prevention system and moderate overlap crash performance," the institute wrote. "In the moderate overlap test, measurements taken from the rear dummy indicated an elevated risk of chest injuries, though the Bronco performed well by most other metrics." Ford's Bronco Sport also failed the same evaluation, but for different reasons. The institute said during the test, "the rear dummy's lap belt slid up onto the abdomen from the ideal position on the pelvis, which increases the chances of internal injuries. Measurements taken from the rear dummy also indicated an elevated risk of injuries to the chest and head or neck." The Bronco Sport earned the group's "acceptable rating" in the updated side test, primarily because of high injury metrics for the driver's pelvis. The institute said the 2025 Volkswagen Taos earned "only" an acceptable rating in the small overlap front test because the safety cage, which is designed to protect occupants, did not hold up well. It also fell short in the updated moderate overlap front test and earned subpar ratings for its headlights and pedestrian crash avoidance system. "Although Volkswagen added pretensioners and load limiters to the rear seat belts in the Taos in January 2025, chest injury metrics for the rear passenger remained high in the moderate overlap test," the report stated.
