Bucs GM Jason Licht shares who the backup plan was if they didn't sign Tom Brady

USA Today4 days ago
The Bucs won a Super Bowl in 2020, led by Tom Brady and backed by a special team. The COVID-19 season was memorable for a variety of reasons, but for Tampa Bay fans, it will be special for several reasons, and Brady was the main one.
This past week, after the team had signed quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to backup Baker Mayfield, general manager Jason Licht dropped some interesting tidbits about the new Bucs quarterback. Back in 2020, the Bucs had their eyes set on Brady, but they also had some backup options. One of those backup options has been revealed to be Bridgewater.
Licht explained, saying, "He's (Bridgewater) a pro's pro and you know that obviously helps to have our offensive coordinator that has relationship with him. Todd (Bowles) has a good relationship with him. We had him in here in 2014 for the draft. There was a there might have been a reason or a situation where we would have taken him if he fell a little further. And, you know, a few years ago, he was what was behind door number two. We talked about that on the sideline, so we ended up with Tom Brady, but now we have Teddy on the roster so that you can have everything just not all at once."
It is safe to say that the road to the Super Bowl may have been much harder to complete if they had not had Brady.
Between what Tom Brady brought to the roster in terms of appeal for the likes of Rob Gronkowski, Antonio Brown, and Leonard Fournette, the type of player he is compared to Bridgewater is on two ends of the spectrum. While Bridgewater has always been a reliable, managing type of player, he has lacked the playmaking that Brady has had.
Might not be an understatement to say that things would be much different had they signed Bridgewater to lead that team.

NFL will continue featuring social justice messages including 'End Racism' in end zones

The social justice messages stenciled at the back of NFL end zones appeared as if they might be on their way out after the league did not use "End Racism" on the back line during last season's Super Bowl. However, the NFL will feature these messages again this season including "End Racism," along with 'Stop Hate,' 'Choose Love,' or 'Inspire Change" on one of the back lines. The opposite end zone in every NFL game will have the message "It Takes All of Us." Before Super Bowl LIX in February, the NFL's decision fueled speculation that removing the "End Racism" slogan from the rotation of messages was intended to appease President Donald Trump and his initiatives against diversity, equity and inclusion programs and policies in the federal government and higher education. Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to watch a Super Bowl in person, invited as a guest of New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson. Last season's Super Bowl featured "Choose Love" at the back of one end zone and "It Takes All of Us" in the other. Leading up to the game, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy denied that the decision had anything to do with Trump. And when the story about the end zone stencils was originally reported by The Athletic, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he was "proud" of the league's efforts to promote diversity. 'We got into diversity efforts because we felt it was the right thing for the National Football League,' Goodell told The Athletic's Michael Silver. 'And we're going to continue those efforts, because we've not only convinced ourselves we've proven it to ourselves — it does make the NFL better.' "End Racism" will be on the back of one end zone for every one of the NFL's international games this season, with "It Takes All of Us" on the other back line. The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will have "Choose Love" on one of their end zones when they open the season versus the Dallas Cowboys, the AP reports. However, the team will rotate all four of the social justice messages during the season. "End Racism" has been stenciled on NFL end zones since 2020 as part of the league's "Inspire Change" initiative, in which the four social justice messages (which initially included "Vote" in place of "Inspire Change") were featured in response to the protests throughout the country following the murder of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis. "Choose Love" was added in 2022, resonating especially with the Buffalo Bills and their fans after a mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket. In addition to the social justice messages along the end zone back lines, the NFL will also promote charitable campaigns including Salute to Service to honor the military community and Crucial Catch for cancer research in its end zones during select weeks through the season.

Kareem Hunt fires back on savage Patrick Mahomes gesture

The post Kareem Hunt fires back on savage Patrick Mahomes gesture appeared first on ClutchPoints. During a Kansas City Chiefs practice, QB Patrick Mahomes attempted to dunk over RB Kareem Hunt playfully. It was some light-hearted teasing amid a highly charged practice in preparation for the season. Afterward, Hunt responded to Mahomes on social media in the most playful way imaginable. Essentially, Hunt called out Mahomes' jumping abilities. 'There's a reason we have on football jersey you don't have that in you!' Hunt said. Some jovial banter to contrast the recent skirmish during training camp, Travis Kelce had to break up. Much like Kelce, Hunt is eyeing another shot at the Super Bowl. The Chiefs are looking to redeem themselves after their blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Altogether, the Chiefs are still one of the best teams in the NFL. The core group of Mahomes, Kelce, and Hunt remains intact and has much to look forward to. As for Hunt, he rushed for 728 yards and had seven touchdowns on 200 carries in 13 games. He's been in the NFL for eight years. In 2017, Hunt was drafted by the Chiefs and had a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns from 2019 to 2023, before returning to the Chiefs in 2024. The Chiefs' offensive dynamic duo In many ways, Mahomes and Hunt feed well off one another. Upon Hunt's return to the Chiefs, Mahomes saw it as an opportunity for him to get back to form. Furthermore, Mahomes, along with coach Andy Reid, celebrated it as an example of redemption. In 2018, Hunt was cut from the team due to domestic violence. Over time, both have developed a strong friendship, with Hunt even attending Mahomes' wedding to Brittney Matthews in 2022. It's safe to say that their friendship has only gotten stronger since Hunt came back to Kansas City. If all goes well, that bond will translate into on-field success.
