Carriage horse woes and more: Letters to the Editor — Aug. 17, 2025
Nay to city horses Regarding 'A New Assault on the Carriage Horses' (Editorial, Aug. 14): The Post is on the wrong side. Our visit to New York City was ruined by seeing those dejected horses hauling heavy loads in the scorching heat. Is there any doubt they don't belong in New York City? Countless horses have suffered in the cruel carriage trade. They haul in sweltering or frigid conditions, and when not working, are stored like equipment with no sunlight, no grass and no pasture. No one with a conscience would support this egregious cruelty. Advertisement Maybe the Statue of Liberty can step down and boot his unfunny behind to Italy. Arthur French Wainscott KC grocery fail The Kansas City government-operated grocery store just closed ('KC padlocks its 'Zocialist' grocery,' Aug. 13). Advertisement Zohran Mamdani's proposed stores will face the same fate. That means food shortages. If you New Yorkers elect him, where will you get your groceries? The city has an abundance of rats, so there is no meat supply issue here. Perhaps, the wealthy communist Zohran might then ceremoniously share a rat, lettuce and tomato sandwich with you at some point in the future, once he is convinced to leave his mayoral mansion. Earl Beal Terre Haute, Ind. Cuomo's nonsense Advertisement Andrew Cuomo has been making grandiose promises for nearly 25 years. How is it that people still believe him('Andrew's Anti-NYC Record,' Editorial, Aug. 11)? How much bull can a Democrat eat and still ask for more of? It appears they have an unlimited appetite for the stuff. John E. Dumary Duanesburg DOE's testing tout At the least, it is insulting to all New Yorkers to see the Department of Education claim some type of Pyrrhic victory with the latest test scores after spending the highest per pupil amount in the country ('DOE touts slight test boost,' Aug. 12). Sadly, this is an annual ritual of abject failure and total collapse on display. John Mancuso Naples, Fla. Leave the meat be Advertisement After reading Steve Cuozzo's article about plant-based restaurant Eleven Madison Park throwing in the towel and going back to serving meat, fish and dairy products, I have a faint glimmer of hope that the will of the people will ultimately prevail against those who would force us to conform to myriad woke dictates ('Switch-a-moo,' Aug. 15). Les Kurtz Manhattan Cop-killer parole Advertisement Anyone who executes a police officer should either receive the death penalty or life without the chance of parole ('Finest family padlock plea,' Aug. 10). To put the families of these slain heroes through the agony of parole hearings for the animals who took the lives of their loved ones is cruel and immoral. The fact that, since 2017, 43 cop-killers have been paroled shows you where the minds of our politicians and Parole Board are: the rat-infested sewers of New York City. European leaders to join Zelenskyy in Washington after Trump embraces Putin stance on war
Key European leaders will join Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington this week as he meets with Donald Trump, rallying around Ukraine's wartime president after Trump has appeared to embrace a peace stance held by Vladimir Putin. United Kingdom Prime Minister Kier Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz are all set to travel to the United States ahead of the talks on Aug. 18. It wasn't immediately clear whether the European leaders would join conversations between the United States and Ukraine. The meeting this week in Washington come after a much-hyped summit between Trump and Putin that saw the U.S. president flex his deal-making skills achieved no major breakthrough in peace negotiations over Russia's war against Ukraine. 'There were many, many points that we agree on,' Trump told reporters after the summit in Alaska without elaborating. 'A couple of big ones that we haven't quite gotten there,' he added. 'So there's no deal until there's a deal.' This is a developing story that will be updated. Contributing: Francesca Chambers and Zac Anderson, USA TODAY; Reuters

The Hunter Home From the Hill: Alvin York of Tennessee
In 458 B.C., faced by a military defeat at the hands of an Italian tribe, the Roman senate appointed a retired statesman, Cincinnatus, as dictator of Rome in hope of rescue. Legend has it that Cincinnatus left his plow in the fields of his farm to answer this summons. In less than three weeks, he defeated the enemy, gave up his powers as dictator, and returned to his estate, hailed as a model of Republican virtue. In 1783, George Washington astounded his contemporaries, including Britain's King George III, by resigning his commission and so giving up the immense power he held as general of the victorious army to return to his Virginia farm. For this act, he became known as the American Cincinnatus. In the rotunda of Virginia's state capitol in Richmond, visitors see a plow of marble as a part of Washington's statue, a nod to the ancient Roman.
