Search and rescue for missing fisherman continues with helicopter today
KUALA TERENGGANU: The search and rescue operation (SAR) for Mohd Noor Abdullah, 54, who was reported missing while out fishing at sea last Tuesday (June 24), continued with the assistance of the Malaysian Maritime AW 139 helicopter on Thursday (June 26).
Terengganu Maritime Director, Maritime Captain Hamiludin Che Awang, said the second day of the SAR operation began at about 7am with a force of 16 rescuers out in an area of 208.15 nautical miles in the waters of Pulau Bidong in Kuala Nerus.
"The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has set up a front base at the Tok Jembal Jetty to coordinate the search operation. "We are expanding the search today around Pulau Bidong, which is often the focus of Mohd Noor's fishing activities," he said in a statement on Thursday.
Mohd Noor was reported missing by his family members after going out to sea at about 2 pm on Tuesday. - Bernama

Appeals court upholds death sentence for father in daughter's murder case
PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today maintained the death sentence for Mohammad Abdullah Mohamed, who murdered his nine-year-old daughter in 2018. A three-judge panel dismissed his appeal against the conviction and sentence previously imposed by the High Court. Deputy Public Prosecutor Datin Asmah Musa and defence lawyer Afifuddin Ahmad Hafifi confirmed the decision to Bernama. Justice Azmi Ariffin, delivering the ruling, stated that despite the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023 allowing for prison terms of 30 to 40 years, the court deemed the death penalty appropriate after evaluating aggravating and mitigating factors. Mohammad Abdullah, a 43-year-old former soldier, was convicted in August 2023 for the murder of his daughter, Nur Aina Nabihah Mohammad Abdullah. The crime occurred at their home in Taman Vista Jaya, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, between 8.30 pm and 11.30 pm on January 31, 2018. Court records revealed that Mohammad Abdullah had forced his daughter and her siblings to perform 500 push-ups and sit-ups as punishment for failing to pray. When Nur Aina Nabihah collapsed from exhaustion, he stepped on her stomach, pushed her, and kicked her forcefully. She later succumbed to her injuries. Mohammad Abdullah retains the right to appeal to the Federal Court. He was also represented by lawyer Aina Melina Johan Ariff Lim during the proceedings.

Ex-JKR Director Charged With Accepting RM70,000 In Gratification
KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- A former director of the Kuala Lumpur Public Works Department (JKR) pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to five charges of receiving gratification, amounting to RM70,000, in connection with a maintenance project. For all the charges, Datuk Ir Norman Md Rabani, 51, is alleged to have received RM70,000 without consideration from an individual concerned in a proceeding or business related to his official duties. The offence was allegedly committed at a shopping mall here, between August 10, 2024, and January 23, 2025.
