Coast Guard recovers 3 bodies following plane crash off California
The twin-engine Beechcraft airplane with three people on board crashed at about 10:55 p.m. PDT Saturday between 200 and 300 yards off of Point Pinos, Monterey, Calif. It had departed from San Carlos Airport on the San Francisco Bay.
A search-and-rescue operation was launched involving local and state law enforcement assets and Coast Guard boats and helicopters, resulting in the body of one occupant being recovered at about 3 a.m. Sunday, the Coast Guard said in a statement.
The plane's fuselage was then located shortly before 6 a.m. by a Cal Fire drone, with U.S. Coast Guardsmen recovering the bodies of the two remaining occupants of the plane at 6:31 a.m and 9:08 a.m.
The U.S. Coast Guard called off the search later Sunday. The operation lasted a combined 13 hours with 346 miles of trackline searched over a search area of about 100 square miles, it said.
The Monterey County Sheriff's Office late Sunday identified the victims as Steven Eugene Clatterbuck, 60, of Salinas, Calif., James Vincent, 36, and Jamie Lee Tabscott, 44. Both Vincent and Tabscott were from Monterey.
"The family and friends of the deceased have expressed that they wish to extend their gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "They ask for privacy during this difficult time."
The cause of the crash is under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board said on X it was investigating.

"It's been fantastic here, and we just have so much support right now. It's really, truly, you know, they support us and we're like thank you and we would like to give something back. So, let's bring this record back to the U.S."

The Titan submersible implosion that killed five people occurred in large part because operator OceanGate had failed to follow "established engineering protocols for safety, testing, and maintenance" of the vessel, a U.S. Coast Guard report finds. The big picture: OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush may have faced criminal charges if he hadn't been killed during the "preventable tragedy" that occurred during a June 2023 diving trip to the wreck of the Titanic, according to the damning report that was published Tuesday. The incident in the North Atlantic Ocean sparked a massive search and rescue operation for the tourist submersible. Remains were later found and taken to St. John's in Newfoundland, Canada. Zoom in: The investigation found the key contributing factors to the tragedy were OceanGate's "inadequate design, certification, maintenance and inspection process for the Titan," according to the Coast Guard. Other factors included "a toxic workplace culture at OceanGate" and "an ineffective whistleblower process." The Coast Guard accuses OceanGate of failing to properly investigate and address "known hull anomalies" following a 2022 expedition to the Titanic. What they're saying: "This marine casualty and the loss of five lives was preventable," said Jason Neubauer, chair of the Coast Guard's Marine Board of Investigation, in a statement accompanying the report. "The two-year investigation has identified multiple contributing factors that led to this tragedy, providing valuable lessons learned to prevent a future occurrence." Of note: The report includes 17 safety recommendations that the Coast Guard says are "aimed at strengthening oversight of submersible operations, improving coordination among federal agencies and closing gaps in international maritime policy."

4 people die in crash of medical transport plane on Navajo Nation in northern Arizona
A small medical transport plane crashed and caught fire Tuesday on the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona, killing four people, the tribe said in a statement. A Beechcraft King Air 300 from the CSI Aviation company left Albuquerque, New Mexico, with two pilots and two health care providers, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and CSI Aviation. It crashed in the early afternoon near the airport in Chinle, about 300 miles (483 kilometers) northeast of Phoenix.
