Busch hits a 3-run homer, Shaw adds a solo shot as the Cubs rout the Cardinals 9-1
After getting shut out 5-0 in Friday's series opener, the Cubs built a six-run lead against Andre Pallante (6-9) by the second inning.
Colin Rea (9-5) allowed one run in six innings, and Carson Kelly and Dansby Swanson each had three of Chicago's 13 hits.
Busch set the tone by leading off the game with a double into the corner in right field, then scoring on Kyle Tucker's RBI single. Tucker scored when right-fielder Jordan Walker's throw got away from Willson Contreras, the cut-off man, on Kelly's single.
In the second inning, Busch made it 5-0 by hitting his 22nd homer of the season — his sixth in eight games against St. Louis this season.
Busch hit four home runs during a three-game stretch when the Cardinals visited Wrigley Field last month, but he'd hit only three more in 25 games since.
Pallante allowed six runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings, his shortest outing in 53 career starts. He was pulled after Seiya Suzuki doubled and scored on Kelly's RBI single.
Shaw tripled home Swanson in the third and added a 395-foot solo homer in the fifth that made it 9-0.
Lars Nootbaar doubled and scored the lone St. Louis run on Alec Burleson's sixth-inning groundout.
The Cardinals played without All-Star second baseman Brendan Donovan, a late scratch due to left groin tightness, and Contreras was removed from the game after an infield single in the sixth.
Key moment
After Pallante allowed a single to Swanson and walked Shaw despite getting ahead 0-2, catcher Yohel Pozo visited the mound. Busch drove Pallante's next pitch 374 feet into the stands in right field for a 5-0 Cubs lead.

The damage for Caissie started in the bottom of the first inning, when he drove in Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki. The Cubs would eventually go ahead 5-0, before Milwaukee stormed back to within a run. That's when Caissie gave Chicago a little insurance with a deep home run to center field. It was good to see the rookie in the lineup for just the fourth time this season following his call-up on August 14. He had just one hit coming into this game, but finished with two more on Tuesday. The struggling Tucker has just eight hits the entire month of August, and has yet to hit a home run this month. Matthew Boyd picked up the win following an outing that went 5.1 innings, allowing six hits and four runs. The bullpen did not allow a run over the final 11 outs of the game. Chad Patrick took the loss for the Brewers. Patrick finished five innings, allowing those five runs on five hits. The nightcap will feature Brandon Woodruff for Milwaukee and Jameson Taillon for the Cubs. Cameron Heyward proves yet again that all hold-ins must eventually end
Another day, another hold-in ends. Like they all do. Like they all will. That's the biggest problem with a hold-in. Yes, the player avoids the daily training-camp fines, which for many players can't be waived by the team. At some point, however, it's time to go to work. That's the reality of being under contract. The contract eventually will be honored, by preparing for and playing in games. While a player who cites an injury (real, embellished, or fabricated) can milk the absence into the regular season, Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward didn't claim to be injured. He wasn't practicing because, as he explained it to reporters, he's looking for his contract to be addressed. 'When I signed [last year], I told them, you know, when I have an All-Pro year, expect me to come back,' Heyward said last week. 'I think everybody giggled a little bit, but in my head, I used it as motivation.' They giggled, perhaps because he had just signed a three-year contractual commitment. They giggled, perhaps because they knew that, even though he vowed to come back after he has an All-Pro year (which happened), there was nothing in the deal that required them to give him another penny. No incentives. No escalators. Nothing. That's the difference between Heyward and a player like Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons. Parsons signed a slotted, non-negotiable deal as the 12th overall pick in the 2021 draft. The Cowboys had the right under the Collective Bargaining Agreement to exercise a fifth-year option, at a predetermined salary. Parsons negotiated, as it relates to his total pay, nothing. Heyward, as a long-time veteran, negotiated and signed a new contract less than a year ago. He could have allowed his contract to expire. While riding first-team All-Pro distinction, he could have gotten more, from the Steelers or from another team. He took the bird in the hand, with no promise of two in the bush. Or anything else. The hold-in hadn't gotten him a revised deal. At some point, it was time to get ready for Week 1. That time isn't a few days before the regular-season opener. The player needs to be ready to play. For Heyward, the moment arrived today, with roughly three weeks to prepare. The Steelers could still decide to change his contract. They're not required to. And we'll find out soon whether it happens. The Steelers have a longstanding rule of not doing contracts once the season begins. Regardless of whether a new deal happens, the hold-in was always going to end. They all do. Except when the player, like Parsons, is practicing not in a stated effort to get a new deal, but because he is injured. Or, as the case may be, 'injured.'
