Study finds that Americans want to ditch pricey phone plans, and one feature is tipping the scales

Phone Arena12 hours ago
A recent survey by Comcast and Morning Consult finds that one in four Americans are actively considering switching their mobile provider in the next year. The top reason: cost. Among those looking to change carriers, 42 percent said their monthly phone bill is too high. But even with growing frustration around pricing, the study found that many Americans underestimate how much they could actually save. While 59 percent of consumers believe they would save around $100 by switching, Comcast says its Xfinity Internet customers could save up to 10 times that amount when they add Xfinity Mobile. In addition to cost, the survey highlights several features that customers value when evaluating new mobile plans. Spam protection was ranked highest, with 52 percent of respondents calling it a top priority. The ability to upgrade to the latest phone anytime followed at 47 percent, tied with a desire for faster speeds. Travel-related perks were also mentioned, with 60 percent of Americans planning to travel this summer and 41 percent saying they would use mobile plan savings to fund trips.

Comcast says these findings directly reflect the thinking behind its Xfinity Mobile Premium Unlimited plan, which includes built-in spam protection, the option to upgrade devices more flexibly, and access to gig-speed data through its WiFi hotspot network. Kohposh Kuda, Senior Vice President of Xfinity Mobile, says the company has focused on what matters most to consumers.

Comcast claims this has increased customer speeds by 150 percent in the past year. For international travelers, Xfinity Mobile offers free talk, text, and data in Mexico and Canada on Unlimited plans, plus a Global Travel Pass that provides 5 GB of high-speed data for $10/day in over 215 countries.
Comcast is promoting its "Break Free from the Big Three Day" as a way to help consumers escape expensive wireless contracts. New customers can receive up to $500 per line to help cover switching costs. Xfinity users can also earn up to $500 in rewards through the Refer-a-Friend program.
There's plenty of MVNOs available today as a lower-priced alternative to the big three, and it's good to see Comcast/Xfinity step up to the plate. For those who are unsure if switching is worth it, the $500 per line should offer a nice incentive and peace of mind knowing that should any penalties be incurred, you will still have a way to cover them. However, in the end, what matters is that the cost and the quality of service are just right, and this is what Comcast says it's working to achieve. Secure your connection now at a bargain price!

I am dreading the Pixel 10 event

I have a confession that might get me ostracized by the tech community. I am not a fan of phone announcements, which is why I am not really looking forward to the Pixel 10 event, which will be held on August 20. There I said it. On second thought, where does it say that a journalist has to have a special place in their heart for hollow events ( checks the rule book )? For one, thanks to leaks and rumors, smartphone events have lost the surprise element. They are more of a confirmation of what we know. They feel like a repeat telecast of something you have watched numerous times already. I can't pretend to be excited. But it's not just that. Smartphone makers are actively trying to be brand ambassadors of boring. That includes Nothing too, just btw. Apple in 2008... and every year since. I don't want flashy lights. I don't want your best. I want what's actually the best. And you let me down, year in and year out. That's why I am dreading the impending Pixel 10 announcement, though, to its credit, Google does manage to announce interesting software-based stuff at least. The Pixel 10 Pro will hardly be any different from the Pixel 9 Pro Smartphones have ceased to be exciting. I am not sure if manufacturers are exactly to blame rapid pace of technology has made us ungrateful. What didn't seem possible until a few years ago has landed in our laps. And that has only made us impatient for more. That said, advancements appear to have plateaued. Foldable phones and under-screen cameras are perhaps the only real change we have seen in a long time, and these, too, haven't reached maturity. Most companies never adopted the latter, and it has been ditched by Samsung as well.A faster chipset, larger displays, and marginally better cameras are all great, but is that all we are ever going to get?I can't help but notice that improvements often come at a huge cost. And I am not okay with that. I am still not over wired earphones. I think Google shouldn't have dropped the Soli sensor. And I think the Fold 7 should have retained S Pen support. Phone makers chase flashy features instead of things that will actually make our lives better. Most phones can barely last a day without a mid-day charge, and many manufacturers have still not nailed the basics, causing batteries to fail and displays to glitch a few years into the ownership. The Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold will likely be minor upgrades, though Google will probably try to jazz things up with AI-related announcements, but, if we are being honest, has AI meaningfully changed how we use our phones? Besides, as a consumer, I don't care about the underlying mechanism behind a feature. Don't tell me about your AI models and the work that went behind a new capability to prove how great it is. It's boring and unnecessary information, and in a world of sensory overload, the last thing we need is an origin story for a feature. I am done with companies making AI the centerpiece of their announcements, even though it should be a means to an end, not the endgame. Foldable phones are great, and every time I wonder why I don't have one, I am instantly reminded why. They are unjustifiably expensive, and many might have bitten the bullet were it not for the fragility of the the latest crop of foldables is more durable than the earlier devices, but your scientific tests do little to placate the likes of me, who are proudly clumsy and drop their phones more time they can keep track of. Life is too busy to make sure I don't drop my precious phone. Accidents happen, but I'll never forgive myself if I let a $2,000 phone slip from my hand. Official Pixel 10 invite. | Image Credit - Mark Gurman The Pixel 10 event, and likely the iPhone 17 event, and any event in between and after that, are guaranteed to be pretty much the same. And that's because the phones themselves are so similar. So, go on, mark your calendars for the Pixel 10 announcement, but don't mind me if I doze off midway through. Apple's Pro phones may soon catch up to Samsung in one key display area

Referential image of a supposed dummy unit of an iPhone 17 Pro. | Image credit — Majin Bu Apple may be ready to introduce an upgraded display layer for its upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models. According to a new report, the company has resolved production issues that previously held back a new scratch resistant, anti-reflective screen iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are now expected to include this advanced display coating, while the standard iPhone 17 and rumored iPhone 17 Air will not. The coating is said to reduce reflections and improve scratch resistance compared to the current Ceramic Shield protection. Apple first explored this new anti-reflective display layer in 2024, but early attempts to bring it to production ran into problems. Applying the coating was slowing down manufacturing lines, raising concerns about yield rates and delays. At the time, it seemed like the feature might be scrapped. However, Apple's suppliers have reportedly improved the process and are now able to scale it for mass production. The current generation of iPhones already includes a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating and the Ceramic Shield glass layer that Apple co-developed with Corning. However, Apple has not prioritized reducing reflections on the iPhone as much as it has for its iPads or Macs, which have received anti-reflective display treatments in recent years. Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (bottom) vs iPhone 15 (top) display differences. | Image credit — Ice Universe via X If this new screen technology does launch as expected, it would bring the iPhone closer to what Samsung already offers. The latest Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S24 Ultra, feature Gorilla Glass Armor, a new cover material that reduces glare by up to 75 percent while also improving scratch resistance. In our coverage of the Galaxy lineup, we noted how this change noticeably improves readability in sunlight. Given the rising interest in display durability and outdoor visibility, Apple's move to introduce an anti-reflective, scratch resistant coating could be seen as both a design and performance upgrade. Still, it is telling that only the Pro models are expected to receive the enhancement. Personally, I feel like this is another way Apple is continuing to separate the Pro models from the standard ones. While the improved screen could genuinely help with everyday usability, users who prefer the base model may once again feel left out of key hardware upgrades. That said, if Apple pulls this off without disrupting production, it might set a new standard for high-end smartphone displays. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! WPC teases major announcement for next week about a "new era of wireless charging"

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has posted a teaser on "X" that says, "Heading into a new era of wireless charging in T-Minus 1 week… Stay tuned." This could be exciting, and the announcement, based on the aforementioned comment, would be expected to come on July 23rd. The teaser shows a green lightning bolt icon with the phrase, "It's coming" underneath the image. The WPC owns the Qi trademark which is the most well known wireless charging standard in the mobile space. Qi 2.2 will not only allow Apple to improve wireless charging speeds for the iPhone, but it will also charge more efficiently, better align the magnets, and be backward compatible. The latter means that older iPhone models will be able to use Qi 2.2, although the platform won't be able to run at its full potential on those models. The WPC's teaser about a new era of wireless charging. | Image credit-WPC The big announcement could also simply introduce more features for Q1 2.2 or announce the first smartphone series to employ the new standard, which could be the Google Pixel 10 line. Even if the upcoming Pixel line does support Qi 2.2, no Pixel yet has ever shipped with magnets to help the user properly align the phone with the wireless charging circuitry. That could soon change. Last month, we told you that Google is supposedly working on a feature dubbed "Pixelsnap" that would debut on the Pixel 10 series. This would include accessories available for the Pixel 10 models that would allow for the use of magnetic alignment. It's possible that we will learn more about this next week when the WPC makes its announcement. However, the organization's statement about "a new era of wireless charging" would seem to indicate that whatever the WPC announces next week, it will be about more than juat offering Qi 2.2 support for one new phone series. So now we have to sit back and eagerly await next Wednesdays announcement to learn all about the upcoming new era of wireless charging. Secure your connection now at a bargain price!
