Switzerland's Riccardo Rancan wins first gold of Chengdu World Games in orienteering

Canada News.Net08-08-2025
CHENGDU, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Switzerland's Riccardo Rancan claimed the first gold of The World Games 2025 here on Friday, after finishing the men's middle distance orienteering in 45 minutes and 22 seconds.
With tough rival Norway absent from the Games, the Swiss team has been favored to win the event.
Francesco Mariani of Italy took the silver medal with a time of 47:43. Canada's Vegard Jarvis Westergard got the bronze just 0.05 seconds behind Mariani. Host China's Tang Jianda and Liu Xiaoming ranked 18th and 23rd, respectively.
Since being accepted as an official World Games event in 2001, orienteering has so far awarded 26 golds, 10 of which went to Switzerland. Norway and Sweden have each collected three.
The three-day orienteering competition features five events: the men's and women's middle distance, the men's and women's sprint and the mixed sprint relay. 80 orienteers from 24 countries and regions are competing in Chengdu.
Orienteering, a century-old sport originated in Sweden, requires athletes to navigate unfamiliar terrain using only a map and a compass. Competitors race against the clock to find sequential control points, with the fastest competitor emerging as the winner.

Mourinho's Fenerbahce draws with Benfica, Bodo/Glimt wins big in Champions League playoffs 1st legs

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) — José Mourinho and Fenerbahce were left Wednesday with a difficult final test in their quest to return to the Champions League, which looks sure to be heading inside the Arctic Circle next month. Fenerbahce drew 0-0 at home against Benfica in the first leg of their qualifying playoff, despite the Portuguese team having a player sent off in the 71st minute. In the north of Norway, Bodo/Glimt's fairytale rise in European soccer continued with a 5-0 rout of Sturm Graz in their playoff first leg. Celtic failed to take home advantage in a 0-0 draw with Kairat Almaty, which hosts the return game four time zones from Scotland in Kazakhstan next Tuesday. Basel captain Xherdan Shaqiri scored early with a penalty but the Swiss champion was held 1-1 at home by Copenhagen. Seven playoffs will be decided with return games on Tuesday and Wednesday next week with the winners completing the 36-team Champions League lineup. The second-leg games include unheralded Pafos of Cyprus holding a 2-1 lead at home against Red Star Belgrade. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. The Champions League draw ceremony to find out each team's eight opponents in the single-standings league format will be made Aug. 28 in Monaco. Fenerbahce has not played for 17 years in the main Champions League, that Mourinho won twice: with Inter Milan in 2010 and Porto in 2004. Mourinho's team dominated the last 20 minutes of play in Istanbul after Benfica midfielder Florentino was sent off for being shown a second yellow card. A video review confirmed an offside call after Fenerbahce forward Youssef En-Nesyri thought he had scored in the 81st. ___ AP soccer:

Noah Lyles loses to Oblique Seville in the 100 at rain-soaked Lausanne meet

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Olympic 100-meter champion Noah Lyles was beaten again by Oblique Seville when the Jamaican splashed to victory Wednesday at a rain-soaked Athletissima meet. Seville defied steady rain and standing water on the track to impress in 9.87 seconds — just .01 outside his winning time at London last month when Lyles also was second in his injury-delayed season. 'We can perform even in hurricanes,' Seville told Swiss broadcaster RTS. 'For me it's just execution and to show my dominance, to separate myself from the field — once again.' Lyles clocked 10.02 in his third straight loss over 100 meters on the Diamond League circuit ahead of defending his world title in Tokyo next month. The United States star trailed out of the blocks then chased down fast-starting Ackeem Blake in the next lane. Blake was given the same time in third. 'I just had a horrible reaction to the gun,' Lyles said. 'Physically I feel great and I am confident every race will get better and better.' Seville placed eighth in the Paris Olympics final last year when his Jamaica teammate Kishane Thompson was edged on the line by Lyles. Thompson is fastest in the world this year — clocking 9.75 in June — and won Saturday in Poland when Lyles was second in an encouraging 9.90. Heavy rain marred the women's field events for Olympic champions at the 50th anniversary meet in Lausanne. High jump world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh opted to stop after one failure each at 1.86 meters and then 1.91, and javelin gold medalist Haruka Kitaguchi placed last. The women's pole vault event was stopped entirely. Standout performances early in the program, when the rain was just light, saw Olympic 800 champion Keely Hodgkinson win in 1 minute, 55.69 seconds and Cordell Tinch take the 110 hurdles victory in 12.98 seconds. ___ AP sports:

Basketball at 2028 LA Olympics will start 2 days before opening ceremony, FIBA says

MIES, Switzerland (AP) — Basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will start two days before the opening ceremony for those Games, organizers confirmed Wednesday. FIBA, the sport's global governing body, said that it has reviewed a revised basketball schedule for Los Angeles and that games will begin on July 12, 2028 — ahead of the July 14 opening ceremony. It is unclear if the men's tournament, the women's tournament or both will start before the official opening. A preliminary schedule released last month calls for three basketball games on July 12 and three more on July 13. 'This adjustment allows the quarterfinals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no game will start earlier than (noon), enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters,' FIBA said in a news release. Bronze-medal games will be played on July 28 and 29, and gold-medal games will occur on July 29 and 30. July 30 is the final day of the Games. Several other sports also are scheduled to start before the opening ceremony, including field hockey, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, cricket and soccer. The canoe slalom competition in Oklahoma City is expected to start in the morning of July 14, hours before the opening ceremony later that day about 1,200 miles (1,931 km) away. The U.S. is the defending men's and women's Olympic basketball champion. The women have won eight consecutive golds, while the men have won five straight.
