Basketball at 2028 LA Olympics will start 2 days before opening ceremony, FIBA says
FIBA, the sport's global governing body, said that it has reviewed a revised basketball schedule for Los Angeles and that games will begin on July 12, 2028 — ahead of the July 14 opening ceremony.
It is unclear if the men's tournament, the women's tournament or both will start before the official opening. A preliminary schedule released last month calls for three basketball games on July 12 and three more on July 13.
'This adjustment allows the quarterfinals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no game will start earlier than (noon), enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters,' FIBA said in a news release.
Bronze-medal games will be played on July 28 and 29, and gold-medal games will occur on July 29 and 30. July 30 is the final day of the Games.
Several other sports also are scheduled to start before the opening ceremony, including field hockey, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, cricket and soccer. The canoe slalom competition in Oklahoma City is expected to start in the morning of July 14, hours before the opening ceremony later that day about 1,200 miles (1,931 km) away.
The U.S. is the defending men's and women's Olympic basketball champion. The women have won eight consecutive golds, while the men have won five straight.

Paige Bueckers scores 44 points, sets WNBA rookie record in Dallas Wings' loss
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Paige Bueckers put together not just one of the best shooting performances by a WNBA rookie, but one of the best performances ever by any player. The top pick in this year's draft scored 44 points in the Dallas Wings' 81-80 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday night, the most points by a rookie in WNBA history and the most points in a game by any player this season. Bueckers sank 17 of 21 shots, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range and 6 of 6 at the free-throw line to become the first player in league history with 40-plus points on 80% shooting from the floor. She also had four rebounds and three assists. Cynthia Cooper also scored 44 points in the WNBA's inaugural season in 1997. But it was a bittersweet performance for Bueckers, whose primary focus is on winning. 'I've always prided myself and the team on winning so that's obviously the main goal,' she said. 'Honestly, I think I'm just most proud of this team, like, the way we fight. This team just means so much to me.' Bueckers, who scored Dallas' final 13 points, credited her teammates. 'Just my teammates getting me open. Screening for me, running some off-ball actions, trying to get myself open looks,' she said. 'Just bringing the ball up the floor. (Luisa Geiselsoder) set amazing screens for me the entire night and then my teammates just looking for me, getting me the ball, getting me open.' Bueckers' teammate Arike Ogunbowale, who did not play on Wednesday night, posted 'ROY' (Rookie of the Year) on X. Bueckers is 60 points shy of Ogunbowale's franchise rookie scoring record of 630 points, set in 2019. 'Unreal. honored to play with you,' teammate Maddy Siegrist posted on X. Even the Sparks fans realized they were witnessing something special, cheering every Bueckers basket. 'It means a lot specifically because people have gotten to see the struggle and people have gotten to see the injuries, and the ups and downs,' said Bueckers, who struggled with injuries at UConn. Bueckers moved past Cooper for third-longest streak of consecutive double-digit scoring games by a rookie in WNBA history with 29. Las Vegas forward A'ja Wilson holds the record of 33. Bueckers had a chance to seal the game with the ball in her hands with 30 seconds left on the clock and a one-point lead. The rookie guard drew two defenders near the 3-point arc and unselfishly passed it to the corner for Aziaha James, whose 3-point attempt hit off the back of the rim. Los Angeles got it to its veteran guard Kelsey Plum, who dribbled down the clock before driving into the lane past multiple defenders to bank in a runner at the buzzer. ___ AP WNBA:

Was the new mixed doubles format a success? Many players think so
NEW YORK (AP) — Even as the time crept towards midnight in the mixed doubles title match, the crowds and energy in Arthur Ashe Stadium didn't budge. The U.S. Open's largest court was packed for the final three matches of the reimagined mixed doubles tournament Wednesday night, which was made up of mainly top singles players for the first time. The only doubles specialists in the draw, Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavasorri, were the eventual champions.

There's been lots of conversation and controversy about the format change. But when all was said and done, most of the players were big fans. The environment inside the sold-out Ashe was 'arguably more crazy' than during a singles match, according to Jessica Pegula, who played in the women's final there last year and lost in the mixed doubles semifinals Wednesday night. 'I loved it,' said Jack Draper, Pegula's partner. 'I wasn't expecting to have as good of a time as I did.' 'I really wanted to play another match,' agreed Pegula. 'I had so much fun….I loved it.' Errani and Vavasorri, who have been critics of the format, were still impressed by the night. 'Playing in front of all these people is something special for us,' Errani said after their title victory. 'Thanks for coming and for staying.' The Italian duo beat Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in the final match. It was a new adventure for both of the singles stars. 'I would like to thank … the tournament for going a little bold,' Ruud said. 'It's been really cool for us players to try (doubles).' Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. The question of whether the format will spread to the other Slams remains unanswered. But following the success of its inaugural run in New York, some players have their hopes. 'Anytime you get a full crowd like this, (you think) how can we keep this going? I mean, unreal night. I won't forget this night,' said Christian Harrison, who partnered with Danielle Collins and is ranked 17th in doubles. We'll remember this stuff forever. I think this is a positive step for doubles.' ___ More AP tennis:
