Was the new mixed doubles format a success? Many players think so
The U.S. Open's largest court was packed for the final three matches of the reimagined mixed doubles tournament Wednesday night, which was made up of mainly top singles players for the first time. The only doubles specialists in the draw, Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavasorri, were the eventual champions.
There's been lots of conversation and controversy about the format change. But when all was said and done, most of the players were big fans.
The environment inside the sold-out Ashe was 'arguably more crazy' than during a singles match, according to Jessica Pegula, who played in the women's final there last year and lost in the mixed doubles semifinals Wednesday night.
'I loved it,' said Jack Draper, Pegula's partner. 'I wasn't expecting to have as good of a time as I did.'
'I really wanted to play another match,' agreed Pegula. 'I had so much fun….I loved it.'
Errani and Vavasorri, who have been critics of the format, were still impressed by the night.
'Playing in front of all these people is something special for us,' Errani said after their title victory. 'Thanks for coming and for staying.'
The Italian duo beat Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in the final match. It was a new adventure for both of the singles stars.
'I would like to thank … the tournament for going a little bold,' Ruud said. 'It's been really cool for us players to try (doubles).'

The question of whether the format will spread to the other Slams remains unanswered. But following the success of its inaugural run in New York, some players have their hopes.
'Anytime you get a full crowd like this, (you think) how can we keep this going? I mean, unreal night. I won't forget this night,' said Christian Harrison, who partnered with Danielle Collins and is ranked 17th in doubles.
We'll remember this stuff forever. I think this is a positive step for doubles.'

Volunteers suspend Ruby Whitehorn indefinitely nearly 2 weeks after arrest

(AP) — The Tennessee Volunteers have suspended fourth-year guard Ruby Whitehorn indefinitely following her recent arrest on felony charges of domestic assault and aggravated burglary. 'Our firm's investigation has also revealed that the factual allegations contained in the warrants are not accurate and are contradicted by eyewitness accounts,' Isaacs said in last week's statement. 'Ruby Whitehorn looks forward to having this matter resolved in the very near future.' Whitehorn started 28 of 34 games last season for the Lady Vols and ranked fourth in scoring with 11.6 points a game. She also had four rebounds per game. She began her career at Clemson where she started 62 of the 66 games. She helped Tennessee go 24-10 in coach Kim Caldwell's debut season. ATP says Safe Sport program has flagged more than 162,000 abusive online comments to players
LONDON (AP) — The ATP Tour said Thursday its Safe Sport initiative has flagged more than 162,000 abusive social media comments directed at players in its first year. The tour said more than 3.1 million comments were scanned, with the ones classified as most severe hidden from the 245 players who were targeted. Safe Sport uses real-time AI to detect and hide social media comments from players' accounts. It launched in July 2024 and is available to the top 250 players in singles and the top 50 in doubles. Andrew Azzopardi, the ATP's director of safeguarding, said the initiative has 'fundamentally changed how we protect our athletes online.' 'More than 1 in 10 comments on players' posts were abusive — rising to 50% in extreme cases,' Azzopardi said in a statement. 'While it won't eliminate abuse overnight, it's our first line of defense. NEW YORK – Rising tennis star Victoria Mboko will face Czech veteran Barbora Krejcikova in the opening round of the U.S. Open.
