Dustin Poirier rallies behind Justin Gaethje's title-shot call after UFC 317
Dustin Poirier is in agreement with Justin Gaethje on the next UFC lightweight title shot.
Gaethje is eyeing the winner of vacant lightweight title fight between Ilia Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) and Charles Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC), which headlines Saturday's UFC 317 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Gaethje (26-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) was upset that Oliveira got the vacant title fight over him, and expressed his frustration towards the UFC. He said it's title fight or bust, and Poirier isn't against that option.
"I think Paddy's getting closer, but I wouldn't think they would give him a shot right now," Poirier told MMA Junkie. "He did just beat (Michael) Chandler, maybe one more big win and he's knocking on the door. Obviously with Arman (Tsarukyan), UFC reaching out to him and putting him as the backup, they have still high hopes for him getting in there for the title. But to me personally, I would pick Gaethje."
Gaethje's discontent comes from the fact that he's done the UFC a solid on several occasions. Prior to UFC 300, he was in line for a title shot after knocking out Poirier to claim the BMF belt at UFC 291. However, he agreed to defend his BMF title against Max Holloway in the UFC 300 main event, and wound up getting knocked out.
He was then scheduled to face Dan Hooker at UFC 313 in March, but Hooker withdrew just weeks before the fight. Gaethje accepted short-notice replacement Rafael Fiziev, an opponent he already faced and beat before at UFC 286. Gaethje won the rematch by unanimous decision.
"I mean a guy who's done everything he's done with the company, and put on the shows, it's must-watch TV every time he's out there," Poirier said of Gaethje. "And he just beat another high-ranked guy, and he's coming towards – he said it, the end of his career. If he only has a few left, he's still fighting the best guys, put him in there and see if he could make that dream a reality, and the division keeps moving forward."

Insider Predicts Steelers Trade For Kyler Murray To Replace Aaron Rodgers
Insider Predicts Steelers Trade For Kyler Murray To Replace Aaron Rodgers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Aaron Rodgers just got here. Is his future already in doubt? Do the Pittsburgh Steelers need to already start making plans for beyond the 2025 season at the QB position? Advertisement Maybe so. Rodgers' career is winding down, and he made that perfectly clear this week, revealing on "The Pat McAfee Show" that his first year with the Steelers will also be his last. So ... at the risk of getting way ahead of ourselves, in a way, that means the Steelers - should they choose to be forward-thinking - are as we've put it "on the clock'' for 2026. Pittsburgh has been here before; 2025 QBs Russell Wilson and Justin Fields were temporary placeholders. And now? Rodgers is so clearly temporary that one Pittsburgh insider is looking to map out the future. ESPN's Steelers beat writer Brooke Pryor tabbed Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray as a player who could be on the Steelers' future radar. Advertisement "Trading for a starting quarterback is rarer these days, and expensive, but not impossible,'' Pryor writes. The Steelers could first look at former first-round picks who haven't played up to their expected potential.'' The tipped name? Arizona's Kyler Murray. Pryor is, again, talking about a post-2025 trade ... and also noted are the dollars involved. Murray's cap hits in 2026 and 2027 are problematic at $53.2 million and $43.5 million. "But,'' Pryor writes, "they could be massaged and restructured." Murray enters his seventh year in the NFL, and at age 27, is a dynamic runner but an erratic passer. He is not considered by most to be "a $50 million QB.'' Advertisement This is best considered, at this time, as a "thought experiment.'' What will Pittsburgh do in 2026? Who is available? Can 2025 rookie Will Howard solve this in-house? For now, the Steelers will ride Rodgers ... one more time. And then in 2026 comes yet another do-over. ESPN Pushes Steelers to Replace Aaron Rodgers in AFC QB Trade
ESPN Pushes Steelers to Replace Aaron Rodgers in AFC QB Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Maybe it's the gang at ESPN that is grasping for straws at QB. Or maybe it's … The Pittsburgh Steelers themselves. Advertisement Yes, Aaron Rodgers finally made the worst kept secret in football an official matter of business recently when the veteran quarterback signed with the team. Pittsburgh had one of the more questionable quarterback situations in the AFC before the deal that now provides at least some temporary stability. 'Temporary' is the key word here because the Steelers have struggled to settle on a bona fide franchise centerpiece since Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season. Rodgers, 41, will be gone after this season. And while the Ink on his contract is still wet and while the air blown in Aaron's pre-retirement is still hot … Advertisement Bristol believes their next franchise quarterback may already be in the league. insists that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson could be in play when the Steelers are forced into another quarterback decision a year from now. Said ESPN's Kevin Clark:'I've never seen anybody more destined to be in the 2026 Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback competition than Anthony Richardson, because I'm looking at this and I'm seeing a training camp where Daniel Jones will probably start with the ones... He's going to get a good start somewhere else.' Clark's belief comes with the premise that the Colts are not willing to wait on Richarson - their recent first-round pick - to put the pieces together. Injuries have plagued his young career and another shoulder injury has befallen him this offseason. So if he's ever made available? Advertisement We say the Steelers need-long term stability under center. Richardson's track record to this point screams the opposite. While he has a fascinating collection of physical gifts, he is no generational quarterback talent and the injuries worsen his case. Does a trade for Arizona's Kyler Murray solve that issue? That's another quarterback name being floated by the network. Pittsburgh's addition of Rodgers and is designed to make the 2025 edition of the Steelers a contender. and after that? Yes, maybe it's all about grasping at straws. Atlanta Falcons Broadcaster Wes Durham Previews the Upcoming Season
Atlanta Falcons Broadcaster Wes Durham Previews the Upcoming Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Wes Durham has served as the Voice of the Atlanta Falcons since 2004. Additionally, he is a college football and basketball announcer for ESPN and the ACC Network. I recently had the chance to chat with Wes about his enthusiasm for the upcoming season and the training camp competitions to keep an eye on this summer. Advertisement Craig: Have you bought into the hype surrounding Michael Penix Jr.? Wes: You have to remind yourself that Michael is an 'older young player' in the NFL. One of the things that he brings to the table is a lot of experience from all different levels. I think he arrived a year ago as an accomplished college player who was clearly ready for the next step, but because of the things he had been through at both Indiana and Washington during his college career, he showed remarkable patience, and I think that will serve him well as this season unfolds. Craig: Are you confident he's the future 'face' of the organization? Wes: This might not be a popular opinion, but for me, Bijan Robinson is the face of the franchise right now. I think QB is a position where many fans think of that title, but in the case of the Falcons, I think Robinson has the potential to be one of the league's showstoppers for seasons to come. Craig: I've written pieces this summer stating that the opener vs. Tampa is a critical game to set the tone for the season. Maybe not a must-win but an important one. Would you agree? Advertisement Wes: I don't know that one game is more important than any other for Atlanta. The first four games before the 'bye week' all seem pretty important to me. Craig: On July 23rd the Falcons will officially open camp. What position battles are you most intrigued by? Wes: Two on defense will be interesting for me. The opposite corner from AJ Terrell is one I'll pay close attention to for sure. Mike Hughes, Clark Phillips, and who else might emerge there. The second one is at Linebacker, where I think Divine Deablo looked strong in mini-camp, and I think could end up being one of the most underrated signings of the off-season. Craig: I'm curious if you still get butterflies on gameday pulling into the stadium? Advertisement Wes: Not like you would think. The chemistry and friendship Dave Archer and I have built in the last 21 years doing the games actually gives us a lot of confidence, so it's a different kind of excitement than butterflies, but it's been a professional thrill to do these games with 'Arch' for so many years. We both are grateful to Mr. Blank and the organization for their long-term support of our broadcasts.
