‘Rebel' Shashi Tharoor's ‘Maunvrat' Drowns Congress Din On Operation Sindoor
Sources say Congress asked Tharoor to toe the party line and question the operation but the senior leader chose to abstain from speaking at the discussion instead
The Congress is fighting two battles—one with the government on Operation Sindoor and SIR and the other—bigger and trickier—with its own party man Shashi Tharoor.
The official list of House speakers for the Congress on Monday was noticed for the conspicuous absence of Tharoor and Manish Tewari. Tharoor was head of the US delegation on Op Sindoor and his speech could have added might to the Congress arsenal. This is precisely the reason why the party did not want him to speak—or speak toeing the party line.
The Congress wants to 'gherao' the government on two issues—Has America brokered ceasefire as claimed by US President Donald Trump and where are the Pahalgam terrorists? It's on this ground that the Congress party has labelled Operation Sindoor unsuccessful and taken a stand different from Tharoor.
Sources say Congress wanted Tharoor to join the debate to question the operation but Tharoor reportedly said he thought India's move was successful. As Congress asked him to toe the party line, Tharoor bluntly refused and chose to not speak instead in Parliament.
Tharoor also made no qualms to hide his forced silence. When questioned by reporters in connection with the Operation Sindoor debate in Parliament, 'Maunvrat, maunvrat…" [vow of silence] is all he said.
If this happens, it would be seen as a huge snub—not just to Congress, but also the other opposition parties that are questioning the operation.
But for Tharoor, it could mean a point of no return. The Congress says he can't be in the party and speak the language that suits the BJP. Tharoor's grudge, meanwhile, is that he has been sidelined by his own party on multiple issues.

Govt prepared for Cong, BJP agitations, says HM Parameshwara
Bengaluru: Home Minister G Parameshwara on Monday said all necessary security precautions have been taken ahead of the protests planned by the ruling Congress and BJP here on August 5. While Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will lead a rally against 'vote theft' during the Lok Sabha polls last year at Freedom Park in the city, the opposition BJP will hold a counter-protest at Vidhana Soudha 'to inform the public about the misleading stand of Congress'. The day will also see state-wide protests by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) employees. Speaking to the reporters, the Home Minister said, 'The government has the capability to handle everything. Adequate police personnel have been deployed for security. Instructions have been issued for all necessary measures.' Parameshwara also gave more details about the Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF), formed to eradicate drugs in Bengaluru city. 'They function like a task force. They act based on wherever the information comes from. We have already given specific instructions to every Superintendent of Police,' said the minister. He also added that to make it even stronger, personnel from Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) have been transferred to ANTF. 'We have declared that there are no more Naxals in Karnataka. In that context, there was a discussion on disbanding the ANF. However, we decided to retain it and reduce the number of personnel. About 200 to 250 personnel were taken from ANF to the Special Action Force. We had taken them for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Now, since there was a staff shortage in Bengaluru, a few were taken from ANF. If there is a need again, we will redeploy personnel.' He also said the report of the statewide survey of Scheduled Castes (SC), overseen by Justice Nagamohan Das Commission, will be submitted to the Chief Minister on Monday. 'After that, the government will act based on the contents of the report. We undertook this with the intention of ensuring internal reservation, and we will implement it,' said the minister.

Congress postpones protest due to Shibu Soren's demise
Bengaluru: The Congress party's planned protest rally against electoral malpractice, led by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, has been postponed to August 8, following the demise of veteran Jharkhand leader and former Chief Minister Shibu Soren. This was announced by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar in Bengaluru on Monday. Speaking to the media at Freedom Park, Shivakumar said, 'Shibu Soren was a towering tribal leader and a longtime ally of the Congress. As a mark of respect, the protest scheduled for Tuesday has been rescheduled. The final rites of Soren will be held on Tuesday at 3 PM, and hence, we have decided not to proceed with the protest on a day of national mourning.' He urged party workers, leaders, and supporters to retain all the preparations made for the event and assured that the protest would take place at the same venue and time on August 8. Shivakumar emphasized that Rahul Gandhi's scheduled press conference in Delhi has also been postponed. 'After the final rites tomorrow, further details will be announced,' he added. Reflecting on Soren's legacy, he said, 'Shibu Soren stood firmly with the Congress during critical times, including the tenure of former PM PV Narasimha Rao. We supported his government, and he supported ours. We pray for his soul to rest in peace.' Despite the Varamahalakshmi festival on August 8, Shivakumar said party duties take precedence. 'We are not against people celebrating the festival or offering prayers, but we expect full support for the party's cause,' he said, appealing to all Congress leaders and workers to participate in the asked about BJP's counter-protest in support of the Election Commission, Shivakumar responded, 'In a democracy, protests and criticism are welcome. But the Election Commission should be neutral. It must act fairly and serve justice. ‘Every patriotic Indian has sought answers on China'
New Delhi: The Congress on Monday said every patriotic Indian has sought answers on China since the 2020 Galwan incident but the Modi government has chosen to obfuscate and hide the truth with its policy of 'DDLJ -- deny, distract, lie, and justify'. The opposition party also alleged that the Modi government is responsible for the biggest territorial setback India has faced since 1962, and accused it of pursuing 'normalisation' with a hostile China because of its cowardice and misplaced economic priorities. The Congress' attack on the government came on a day the Supreme Court censured Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over his alleged derogatory remarks about the Indian Army during his Bharat Jodo Yatra. The apex court, however, stayed the proceedings initiated in the matter against Gandhi before a Lucknow court. The top court told Gandhi, 'How do you get to know that 2,000 sq km of Indian territory has been occupied by Chinese? Were you there? Do you have any credible material?' Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said ever since 20 brave soldiers were martyred in Galwan on June 15, 2020, every patriotic Indian has sought answers. 'Yet instead of providing answers, the Modi government for the past five years has chosen to obfuscate and hide the truth with its policy of 'DDLJ -- deny, distract, lie, and justify',' he said. In a post on X, Ramesh went on to ask a series of questions. 'Why did the Prime Minister give a clean chit to China saying 'Na koi hamari seema mein ghus aaya hai, na hi koi ghusa hua hai' on 19 June 2020, only four days after our soldiers heroically sacrificed their lives for the country in Galwan?' Ramesh said. 'Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi has said: 'We want to go back to the status quo of April 2020'. Does the withdrawal agreement of 21 October, 2024, take us back to the status quo?' he said. Are Indian patrols not required to take Chinese concurrence to access their Patrolling Points in Depsang, Demchok, and Chumar, whereas earlier they were able to freely exercise India's territorial rights, Ramesh added.
