China takes mediation role in Thai-Cambodian conflict, calls for restraint

China's ambassador to the
United Nations has called for a de-escalation in the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and confirmed that Beijing is playing 'a mediation role' after the sudden
border clash on Thursday.
In an interview broadcast on state-owned CCTV on Friday,
Fu Cong said that 'China is playing a mediation role to facilitate communication between the two sides, and hopes the situation will stabilise as soon as possible'.
Fu also urged the two nations to 'exercise restraint' and 'stabilise the situation' during the interview.
'Cambodia and Thailand are not only China's good neighbours, but also friendly neighbours to each other and important members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations,' he said.
'Asean has a long-standing tradition of resolving differences through peaceful means, and we hope that peace will once again prevail in this case.'
Thai and Cambodian armies clashed along their shared border on Thursday, in a major escalation that included artillery fire and rockets. The conflict has led to multiple deaths within 24 hours, believed to be mostly civilians.

Bangladesh protest victim, witness gives evidence in ex-PM Hasina trial

The first witness in the trial of Bangladesh's fugitive ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina gave evidence on Sunday, a man shot in the face during protests that toppled her last year. Hasina, 77, who has defied court orders to return from India to attend her trial on charges amounting to crimes against humanity, is accused of ordering a deadly crackdown in a failed bid to crush the student-led uprising. Up to 1,400 people were killed between July and August 2024, according to the United Nations. The first witness, among the 11 cases that the prosecution is expected to present to the court, was Khokon Chandra Barman, whose story reflects the violence of the protests. The 23-year-old wears a mask to conceal his face, which was ripped apart by gunshot during the culmination of the protests on August 5, 2024, the same day that Hasina fled Dhaka by helicopter. 'I want justice for the ordeal I've been going through, and for my fellow protesters who sacrificed their lives,' he told the court.

UN weakness over Ukraine war, Iran-Israel conflict shows need for reform

History teaches us lessons, but it's still up to us to listen. The UN Charter was written as a result of the bloodiest conflict in modern history. The lesson is obvious: we should not wait until after wars end to build institutions that ensure peace. Today, military policy is increasingly governed by the temperaments of individuals as opposed to a wider international framework. The world becomes a far less stable place when policy is based on mood instead of multilateral decision-making. Organisations such as the United Nations have traditionally helped limit the power of rogue actors. When the power of these organisations is reduced, dangerous unpredictability is to be expected. The UN Security Council should be the cornerstone of peacekeeping policy, yet today it is increasingly sidelined by personality as power prevails over principle. More than an indictment of world leaders, this signals the failure of the UN to update itself to reflect the modern balance of global power. Reforming the UN is necessary to restore predictability and legitimacy to international decision-making. The UN was conceived in the ashes of a world war that left more than 60 million people dead. The Security Council was the pinnacle of a post-war vision – a forum where the most powerful nations could negotiate peace rather than prosecute war. That world no longer exists, yet the council remains unchanged. The last meaningful update to the Security Council came in 1965, the same year The Beatles released Help!, their fifth studio album. Since then, the world has added billions of people and dozens of new countries. The UN Charter still reflects a geopolitical order that is more than half a century out of date.

Palestinian move makes Canada deal 'hard': Trump

Palestinian move makes Canada deal 'hard': Trump Donald Trump's Truth Social post came soon after Canada's announcement that it is recognising a Palestinian state. File photo: Reuters US President Donald Trump said it will be difficult to make a trade deal with Canada after the country announced it is backing Palestinian statehood. "Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh' Canada!!!" he wrote on Truth Social. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Carney announced on Wednesday that Canada is planning to recognise a Palestinian state at a meeting of the United Nations in September. Canada's announcement followed similar moves by France and Britain. Israel and its closest ally, the United States, both rejected Carney's statements. Canada and the US are working on negotiating a trade deal by August 1, the date Trump is threatening to impose a 35 percent tariff on all Canadian goods not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. Carney said on Wednesday that tariff negotiations with the Trump administration have been constructive but that the talks may not conclude by the deadline. (Reuters)
