Mohan Bhagwat flags threats to jobs from AI, calls for labour-centric tech policy

Hindustan Times6 days ago
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday said that emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence could impact employment and reduce respect for labour. He called for urgent assessment and policy responses to safeguard workers' interests. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat addressing an event in New Delhi.(PTI)
'Technology is coming... When new technologies come, they bring many new questions as well. What will happen to unemployment? Will it reduce unemployment, or increase it?' Bhagwat said at an event in Delhi marking 70 years of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), the labour wing affiliated with the RSS.
Stressing that technology 'can't be rejected,' Bhagwat said it should be 'customised' to suit the needs of society and protect the dignity of labour. 'Technology makes mankind's nature a bit harsh and somewhat reduces the respect for labour,' he said.
His remarks come amid growing debate over the role of AI and automation in India's workforce, particularly in the unorganised sector, which employs nearly 90% of the labour force. Bhagwat said the sector needs urgent attention. 'The unorganised sector is vast. Even within the organised sector, there's an unorganised aspect. We need to work for this sector and their self-respect,' he said.
Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya, who also spoke at the event, said trade unions operate differently based on their ideological orientation, but the BMS aligns its work culture with 'the Indian lifestyle.' He said the 'India Model' was presented by a BMS-led delegation at the International Labour Organization (ILO), showcasing how India managed labour welfare during COVID-19.
'We have managed COVID with the India Model and succeeded. Service of mankind is our nature, and that is why India managed the pandemic very well,' Mandaviya said.
Bhagwat used the occasion to reflect on the BMS's growth and called for a new model for labour organisation aligned with evolving global realities. 'We had to operate within the existing system. Times have changed now, and perhaps it's time for us to create a new model based on our ideology and the changing global landscape,' he said.
'They used to say to Thengadi ji, 'Your saffron flag cannot be hoisted in this field.' But after 70 years, we have become a global giant and the No. 1 workers' organisation in the country,' he added.
Bhagwat also flagged concerns about the wider impact of tech-driven transformation. 'Technological transformation is another challenge. Knowledge-based technology needs to be thought about with a new perspective—it can devalue the prestige of shram (labour),' he said.
Calling the 'Udyog Pariwar' concept—a framework that positions workers and employers as part of the same industrial family—a unique contribution by BMS to the labour movement, Bhagwat said many international trade unions are observing its model closely. But he added, 'The objective of 'Workers Unite the World' is still a distant dream.'
'If labourers suffer, society suffers. Working for labourers is our primary inspiration,' he said.

Trump hints at 20–25% tariffs on Indian imports, says final decision still pending

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (July 29) that India could face tariff rates as high as 25% on its exports to the United States, but emphasised that a final decision had not yet been made. The remarks come as the two countries work toward resolving longstanding trade disagreements. 'I think so,' Trump responded when asked by reporters aboard Air Force One if the US would impose a 20–25% tariff rate on Indian goods. 'India has been a good friend, but India has charged basically more tariffs than almost any other country. You just can't do that.' Trump added. The US President made the comments while returning from a five-day trip to Scotland, reiterating his stance that the US must be treated fairly in global trade relationships. The reciprocal tariffs were imposed on April 2, 2025 and were supposed to take effect from July 9, 2025. However, the deadline for the imposition of the import duties was later extended to August 1, 2025. The US has so far reached agreements with the UK, Indonesia, Philippines, European Union and Japan. Citing two Indian government sources, Reuters reported that New Delhi is preparing for the possibility of higher tariffs—likely between 20% and 25%—on select exports as a temporary measure. Instead of offering fresh concessions, India plans to resume comprehensive trade talks in mid-August during the visit of a US delegation. 'Talks are progressing well, and a delegation is expected in Delhi by mid-August,' Reuters quoted one India official as saying, with the news report adding that the US may still issue a tariff letter in a 'worst-case scenario.' US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer echoed the need for further talks during an interview with CNBC, saying, 'We continue to speak with our Indian counterparts, we've always had very constructive discussions with them.' However, he admitted more work is needed: 'We need some more negotiations on that with our Indian friends to see how ambitious they want to be.' 'The thing to understand with India is their trade policy for a very long time has been premised on strongly protecting their domestic market. That's just how they do business,' he noted. 'The president is in a mode of wanting deals that substantially open other markets,' Greer added. 'That they open everything or near everything.'

Parliament Monsoon session: Priyanka, Akhilesh & Kanimozhi target government over Pahalgam attack

NEW DELHI: Charges of lack of "govt accountability" for repeated terror attacks , ceasefire under pressure and govt's refusal to "name" China echoed in LS as Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra , SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and DMK's Kanimozhi led the charge in targeting BJP over the Pahalgam attack and the conflict with Pakistan. Priyanka mocked that Pulwama, Uri, Pathankot terror attacks took place under then home minister Rajnath Singh, who later became the defence minister, while Manipur and Delhi burnt in riots and Pahalgam attack happened under Amit Shah, who continues to be home minister. Akhilesh said Pahalgam happened just like the Pulwama attack, with the same intelligence failure at its heart. He questioned the abrupt ceasefire just when India was on the verge of teaching a lifetime lesson to Pakistan. He attributed the ceasefire to "deep friendship", without naming Modi or Trump. About the killing of three terrorists coinciding with the Parliament debate, Akhilesh asked "why did the encounter happen only yesterday?" Opposition also slammed BJP for using the Pahalgam tragedy for "communal campaign". In a bizarre scene, as Priyanka named the 25 victims of Pahalgam "who were Indian", BJP members shouted they were all Hindus. The speech ended with her naming them, and Congress and BJP benches shouting "Indian" and "Hindu" respectively in loud chorus. tnn

AAP, BJP spar over flooding, Cong attacks Delhi govt too

New Delhi: After Tuesday's rain, AAP slammed BJP-led Delhi govt for "turning the capital into a pool", prompting the party in power to claim that the situation was brought under control within a few hours by joint efforts of the govt and Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Sharing videos of waterlogging on social media platforms, AAP functionaries claimed that the city completely "collapsed" within five months of BJP forming the govt. "Despite tall claims and promises of proper management by CM Rekha Gupta and PWD minister Parvesh Verma, even a brief spell of rain on Tuesday morning was enough to bring the national capital to a standstill," the party alleged. "Waterlogging inundated not just the inner streets but also the city's most posh localities, exposing once again the complete failure of BJP's so-called 'four-engine' govt to deliver even basic civic infrastructure. " AAP claimed that within days of lieutenant governor VK Saxena and Public Works Department minister Verma publicly congratulating each other for their "so-called efforts" to prevent waterlogging at ITO, the stretch was submerged once again on Tuesday. "This is ITO. On July 9, LG and PWD minister came here to inspect anti-waterlogging work and patted each other's back. Now that it's flooded again, please accept my congratulations too," Delhi AAP convener Saurabh Bharadwaj posted on X. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi He also posted videos of waterlogged roads in Connaught Place, Tibetan Market on Janpath Road, and near RML Hospital. Sharing CP's video, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal posted on X, "When this is the condition of Connaught Place, the heart of Delhi, it's not hard to imagine the state of the rest of Delhi. Just 10 minutes of rain and the roads have turned into ponds. In five months, where has BJP brought Delhi to? Is this the speed of the 'four-engine' govt?" Leader of the opposition in Delhi Assembly Atishi said even Civil Lines— home to both LG and CM—was waterlogged. She also posted videos of waterlogging in several parts of the city, including Panchkuian Road, Kamla Nagar Market, Sadar Bazar, Ambedkar Stadium near Delhi Gate, and Pragati Maidan. Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said heavy rainfall continued across Delhi for over three hours, leading to waterlogging in some areas. "Due to the efforts of Delhi govt and MCD, the situation was brought under control within just a few hours," he said. Sachdeva claimed timely cleaning of major drains and sewers on key roads resulted in "significant improvement", unlike the situation in 2024 and earlier years, when even a light rain would flood roads for days. "The residents of Delhi felt the difference brought by the change in govt. The chief minister, the ministers, the mayor, BJP MLAs and councillors, and the NDMC vice-chairperson, stepped onto the streets and ensured that waterlogging was cleared within hours of the rain," he claimed. Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav slammed BJP govt for the "lack of preparedness" to tackle the monsoon chaos. "Despite giving extended deadlines, PWD failed to complete the desilting work," he alleged.
