Uttar Pradesh is now India's manufacturing backbone—And the numbers prove it
Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, has over the years emerged as a hub of the manufacturing sector, thanks to its well-equipped infrastructure and strong initiatives for attracting investments. From hitting an economic slump due to multiple factors, it has now become the preferred destination for enterprises across segments such as smartphone production, textiles, and auto components. This essentially makes it the backbone of the country's economy.
Dial M for more! UP leads smartphone manufacturing bloc in India
The state has set quite a high benchmark when it comes to mobile manufacturing. It accounts for 55% of the country's smartphone production and 50% of its mobile component manufacturing. This gives a clear edge over a state like Karnataka, which accounted for nearly 1% of India's smartphone production a few years ago
Home to 14 fully functional Special Economic Zones (SEZ's) and three Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMCs), the state is now taking long strides in India's economic development. EMCs provide enterprises easy access to ready-to-use factories and warehouses, making it simpler for them to find a foothold in the state.
Similarly, companies operating in SEZs enjoy benefits such as tax holidays and benefits, which makes it possible for them to navigate the cesspool of (unnecessary) bureaucracy. These initiatives have boosted investor confidence and prompted international players to bet big on the state.
Vivo, for instance, has planned to invest over Rs 7,000 crore in Uttar Pradesh and set up a massive manufacturing plant in Greater Noida. Global players such as Oppo and Samsung too have invested in the state, creating a vibrant economic ecosystem.
A leader in textiles
Uttar Pradesh is also the nerve centre of India's textiles and apparel segment, accounting for nearly 13% of its fabric output. This puts it in fourth position and ahead of states such as Andhra Pradesh (~5%) and West Bengal (~6%).
Textile enterprises based in UP enjoy various benefits under the UP Textile & Garmenting Policy (2022), which has further rejuvenated this segment. These include 100% electricity duty exemption for 10 years, 25% subsidy on capital machinery, and 100% stamp duty exemption.
These initiatives have encouraged enterprises to make Uttar Pradesh their base. In 2024 alone, 123 new textile companies started functioning in Uttar Pradesh. This brought in a total investment of ₹2,492 crore. Some of these enterprises include GESL Spinners Pvt Ltd (Rs 227 crore) and M-S Interweaves Polytex Pvt Ltd (Rs 150 crore).
Additionally, the state has 12 flourishing textile parks, which are a boon for MSMEs as they help them enjoy access to shared facilities like design centres and training facilities. These centres also have also created jobs. The PM MITRA Mega Textile Park, for instance, alone has created 100,000 employment opportunities so far. This gives textile enterprises an opportunity to be part of a vibrant ecosystem where opportunities and collaborations are around the corner.
A force in auto components segment
Uttar Pradesh's dominance over the manufacturing sector is not limited to the smartphone and textile segments alone. It also excels in manufacturing automotive and auto components. The EV Manufacturing & Mobility Policy 2022 aims to create over 1 million jobs through an investment of ₹30,000–50,000 crore. It also makes life easier for enterprises through incentives like 20-30% capital exemption, 100% waiver of road tax, and subsidies on charging stations.
Not surprisingly, this has transformed UP into the home of major players in the auto components segment. Last year Automotive Manufacturers Pvt. Ltd. (AMPL)-- a company that has been part of landscape for 70 years, set up a new 3S facility in Varanasi. Similarly, Servotech Power Systems Ltd has invested around Rs 300 crore in establishing an EV Charger manufacturing plant.
The government is also taking steps to further rejuvenate its already thriving infrastructure. Not too long ago, Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) allocated Rs 456 crore to strengthen civil and electrical infrastructure across 93 industrial areas. Additionally, the body also allotted 113 plots across various industrial zones. They attracted an investment of Rs 700 crore and are projected to create over 4000 jobs.
Given this, UP is set to remain the go-to place for those hoping to flourish in the manufacturing sector.

Funds not a constraint, only speed of execution is the issue: Nitin Gadkari
Pune (Maharashtra) [India], June 24 (ANI): Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on Monday emphasised the government's strong financial standing and the urgent need to accelerate infrastructure project execution. Speaking at the Punyabhushan Award ceremony in Pune, he also took aim at the lack of out-of-the-box thinking within the administration. 'There is no shortage of funds. I often make announcements worth Rs 1 lakh crore to Rs 50,000 crore. People especially journalists find it hard to believe such figures. I tell them to write down every word, and if even one project doesn't happen, they can run it as breaking news. But today, the problem isn't funding it's the lack of speed in execution,' Gadkari said. He explained that innovative financial models have enabled infrastructure investments far beyond annual budgetary allocations. 'Though the budget is Rs 2 lakh crore, I can manage to spend Rs 8 to Rs 10 lakh crore,' he said, highlighting the Indian economy's dynamic and growth-oriented approach. Gadkari criticised the rigid functioning of the administration system, likening it to rural animal behaviour. 'In villages, when animals move out to graze, they walk in a disciplined straight line. Similarly, our administrative system functions in a rigid, linear way. If someone suggests an out-of-the-box idea, it's often dismissed outright as 'not possible',' he said. Recalling a significant conversation with the then Finance Commission chairman, Gadkari said that 406 projects worth Rs 3.85 lakh crore were stuck with banks and risked becoming non-performing assets (NPAs). 'The issue wasn't money--it was land acquisition delays, pending utility shifting, lack of railway and environmental clearances, and legal cases. These systemic blockages pushed major companies towards bankruptcy,' he said. The minister further explained how the government intervened. 'We sat together, assessed the projects, and terminated Rs 40,000 crore worth of unviable ones. We revived others and prevented Rs 3 lakh crore worth of NPAs, saving banks and the economy from a major crisis,' he said. He credited Vijay Kelkar, former bureaucrat and economist, for introducing impactful reforms. 'Kelkar Sahab was open to new ideas. He accepted what was reasonable, rejected what was not, and corrected policies accordingly. His goal was always clear India's economic growth and development.' Concluding his speech, Gadkari stressed that policy-making is crucial for progress and praised administrative officers who drive systemic change. 'Without reform-oriented leadership, even the most capable officials get frustrated. Kelkar's legacy reminds us that governance must be agile, not rigid,' he said. (ANI)

Trials on to check new tech for safer bus travel in UP
1 2 3 Lucknow: Everyday travel in UP's buses will become safer and more comfortable with technology enabling live counting of number of passengers boarding or de-boarding buses and issuing alerts in case of a yawning and sleepy driver. This system will be in place very soon. Currently, the on-board unit controller with multiple functionalities is under trial in two AC buses plying on the Lucknow-Delhi route for over one month, and the results have been up to the mark, officials said. It may take another fortnight of trial before the private firm conducting it submits its report to the UP state road transport corporation (UPSRTC). The use of the on-board unit controller will be the first for any SRTC in the country. Multiple cameras will be installed inside a bus, along with a control panel in front of the driver's seat where the feed from all the cameras will play. The automatic passenger counting (APC) camera will keep track of passengers entering and exiting the bus, as it can judge the moving direction of passengers. "One of its benefits is that it can let people know the number of vacant seats in a bus live to those waiting at stations, besides enabling analysis and statistics of passenger flow data," said sources involved with the trial. The advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) camera, on the other hand, will alert the driver on multiple safety parameters, such as front-end collision when a vehicle is detected ahead at a configured distance, safety distance monitoring, lane departure warnings and pedestrian detection. The on-board unit controller also includes a driver monitoring system (DMS), which features a 'Dog Watch', a small display unit the size of a table clock, installed in front of the driver's seat. It triggers alarms and buzzers when the driver is caught yawning, smoking, talking on the phone, distracted, inattentive, or fatigued. The 'in-bus' camera, another feature of the on-board controller, allows passengers to raise alarms during emergencies, deters theft and vandalism, and protects drivers. The bus driver console (BDC) is a control panel with many functions, such as displaying the fitness details of the bus, helping the driver navigate routes, communicating with control room staff and displaying the feed from cameras inside the bus, among others. "It may not be done at once for all buses, but introduced as a pilot on a select route," said GM (IT), UPSRTC, Yazuvendra Kumar.

Wipro revises capital allocation policy
1 2 3 Bengaluru: Effective this fiscal, Wipro has revised its capital allocation policy. The company expects to return 70% or more of the net income cumulatively over a three-year period through a combination of dividends, special dividends, or share buyback. Its capital allocation policy targeted a minimum payout of 45%–50% of net income for a period of the trailing three years. "Effective FY26, we have revised our minimum committed payout to 70% of net income, calculated cumulatively over three years. A 1:1 bonus issue in Q2 and an interim dividend of Rs 6 per share in Q3 underscore our commitment to enhanced shareholder returns," Wipro chairman Rishad Premji wrote in the letter to shareholders published in the 2024-25 annual report. TOI reported that Premji's remuneration rose by 109% to $1.6 million during the 2024-25 fiscal year, according to a US regulatory filing. The considerable increase stemmed primarily from a rise in commission payments. Premji is entitled to a commission at the rate of 0.35% on the incremental net profit of the company over the previous fiscal year. Wipro saw a decrease of 0.6% in the aggregate remuneration of employees at Wipro, as shown in the firm's annual report. Wipro added a meagre 732 during the year with a heavy net reduction of 1,157 in the December quarter. "The aggregate remuneration of employees excluding whole-time directors decreased by 0.6% over the previous financial year, attributed to a decrease in headcount," it said. The median remuneration of employees (MRE) excluding whole-time directors was Rs 9.7 lakh and Rs 9.8 lakh in the financial year 2024-25 and 2023-24 respectively. The CEO pay ratio to employees stands at 548:1. Premji said that Wipro turns 80 in December, a rare milestone in any industry. "For nearly 50 years, we have been in the technology business—navigating disruption through continuous innovation, deep client trust, an adaptable culture, and a long-term mindset," he said. On the roadmap ahead, Premji said the external environment may remain uncertain. "But durable businesses are built in cycles like these. We have used this time wisely—investing in our people, deepening client impact, and staying anchored in purpose. Wipro's 80-year journey has never been about short bursts of success. It's about long-term stewardship, continuous reinvention, and doing business the right way."
