Tornado near track cancels IndyCar practices Friday at Iowa Speedway. What we know
NEWTON, Iowa — IndyCar's on-track action Friday in preparation for its doubleheader race weekend at Iowa Speedway was canceled as severe thunderstorms rolled through the area surrounding the track, including a tornado that touched down less than two miles from the track. Indy NXT managed to run most of its lone practice of the weekend before yellow flags came out at 2:01 p.m. local time (CT) for rain drops that began to fall, giving the junior series just under 30 minutes of running before the storms arrived. Advertisement IndyCar was scheduled to have its first of two weekend practice sessions starting at 2:35 p.m., one meant for drivers to solely run the high-line around the track in an effort to lay down rubber and help the quality of the racing this weekend, but at 2:12 p.m., lightning strikes were spotted within eight miles of Iowa Speedway, putting on-track action on an indefinite hold as patrons were asked to exit the grandstands and seek shelter. Various members of the IndyCar and Indy NXT paddocks hunkered down inside the Newton Club suites and the infield media center, the two largest permanent structures around the track. A tornado warning was announced by the National Weather Service at 2:28 p.m., followed shortly by several rounds of tornado sirens. A wall cloud and cloud rotation could be seen just north of the track, with additional rotation spotted to the south. According to a race official, a tornado touched down 1.5 miles from Iowa Speedway. A tornado warning for the area surrounding the track expired at 3:15 p.m., though a tornado watch continued until 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. IndyCar was scheduled to hold its high-line practice from 2:35 to 3:20 p.m., with its lone traditional practice just afterwards from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Qualifying for Indy NXT's race Saturday was slated for 5:35 to 6:20 p.m. Friday early evening. Advertisement Insider: IndyCar paddock 'kinda sad' to be back at Iowa Speedway. Series tries to improve races since repave Just before 4 p.m. as rain continued to fall at the track, IndyCar announced that on-track activity for the rest of the day had been canceled and would resume Saturday. In the revised Saturday schedule at Iowa Speedway, IndyCar will hold a 30-minute high-line running session from 10-10:30 a.m. (ET), followed by an all-cars practice from 10:45-11:30 a.m. Indy NXT will then hold its lone race of the weekend starting at noon until roughly 1 p.m. IndyCar's qualifying session for both races will run from 1:30-2:30 p.m. As scheduled, IndyCar's race broadcast on Fox will kick-off at 5 p.m. with the green flag scheduled for 5:20 p.m. IndyCar's practice action will air on FS2, with Indy NXT's race and IndyCar qualifying being shown on FS1. Wildfires close Grand Canyon's North Rim 'until further notice'
Wildfires raging near the Grand Canyon's North Rim have prompted evacuations, air quality concerns and the closure of the North Rim of the national park. The White Sage Fire started July 9 when lightning struck during a thunderstorm, according to the Bureau of Land Management. As of late July 11, it had burned 10,973 acres and was 0% contained. The fire is located 15 miles southeast of Fredonia, Arizona, and was moving toward Jacob Lake, officials said. Authorities evacuated about 500 visitors from the Grand Canyon's North Rim on July 10 in response to the fast-growing fire, the National Park Service said. Evacuations were expanded on July 11 to include a vast chunk of land north of the Grand Canyon with the following boundaries: the Utah border in the north, Grand Canyon National Park in the south, House Rock Valley Road/Buffalo Ranch Road in the east, and Kaibab National Forest in the west, according to the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network. The area is in "go" status, meaning all residents and visitors should leave immediately. "All visitors have left the area, and park employees and residents remain sheltering in place," the Grand Canyon NPS said. Another fire burning on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, the Dragon Bravo Fire, burned 1,500 acres and was also 0% contained. It started July 4 as the result of another lightning strike, officials said. Evacuation orders were also issued to North Rim residents in the vicinity of the Dragon Bravo fire. "The North Rim remains closed to all visitor use until further notice to support firefighting operations and ensure public safety for this fire and the nearby White Sage Fire," the National Park Service said in a July 11 statement. Smoke can be seen from the South Rim of the park, and the National Park Service urged visitors to monitor air quality conditions. Extreme fire weather was helping the White Sage Fire grow rapidly, officials said. The fire "made a significant run" the afternoon of July 10, with "erratic" winds of 15 to 20 mph and low humidity helping it spread. According to forecasters with the National Weather Service office in Flagstaff, "elevated fire danger will continue as long as hot and locally breezy conditions remain." Calmer weather expected for Harley-Davidson Homecoming after July 11 washout, record rain
Harley fans rejoice: after Friday's severe weather cancellations, conditions look much better for Harley Davidson Homecoming's July 12 events tonight. Here's what to expect for the Milwaukee weather for the rest of this weekend. For July 12, the National Weather Service has predicted a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7 p.m., and an overall 20% chance of rain for the evening. Sunday, July 13, is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 84 degrees. It should stay clear through the night. Friday, meanwhile, was another story. Record amounts of rain hit Milwaukee as Harley Homecoming's July 11 events were cancelled due to the severe weather that night. The Veterans Park grounds, then under a tornado watch, were evacuated around 6 p.m. From about 8 p.m. on, strong winds, lightning and heavy rain hit southeastern Wisconsin. There was about 1.5 total inches of rainfall — the most precipitation Milwaukee has so far had in 2025, according to data from the National Weather Service. The agency also reported wind speeds of up to 26 mph. The Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network gauged 1.01 inches of rain in West Allis, 0.66 in Wauwatosa and, in Whitefish Bay, almost 0.4 inches. Harley Homecoming officials did not report any storm damage to the venue.
