GHMC panel against renewing agreement with EESL for LED streetlights' maintenance

The Hindua day ago

A special GHMC standing committee meeting convened by Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi unanimously decided to go for fresh tenders for the maintenance of streetlights, which has been a chronic issue in the city for several years, since the LED lamps were installed.
Two options were placed before the standing committee by the Electrical wing of the GHMC, one to revive the agreement with certain modifications with the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) for streetlight maintenance, and the second to select a new agency for comprehensive operation and maintenance of streetlighting.
Additional Commissioner Venugopal Reddy explained the maintenance gaps of EESL and the modifications proposed in the agreement, along with the stipulations of the new tenders, which are said to plug all the loopholes, and ensure phase-wise replacement of all bulbs, installation of new lamps and CCMS boxes, and maintenance of the infrastructure.
With the committee unanimously voting for the second option, Ms. Vijayalakshmi instructed the zonal commissioners to ensure purchases and maintenance of streetlights till the new agency takes over.
The agreement with EESL for installation and maintenance of LED streetlights has come to an end this month, after seven years of turbulent journey full of complaints about non-functioning streetlights.

Moose Wala's 3rd death anniversary dedicated to Pahalgam victims

The family of slain Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Sidhu Moose Wala, marked his third death anniversary on Thursday by dedicating the occasion to the victims of the recent Pahalgam attack. A large gathering of fans and supporters assembled at his native village Musa in Punjab's Mansa district to pay tribute. Moose Wala was shot dead on May 29, 2022, in Jawahar Ke village in Mansa, just a day after his security was scaled down. The murder was allegedly plotted by gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, currently in jail, and his Canada-based associate Goldy Brar, who remains a fugitive. The case remains under investigation, with key masterminds yet to be brought to justice. Addressing the gathering, Moose Wala's father Balkaur Singh thanked the public for continuing to honour his son's legacy but voiced deep anguish over the lack of justice in the high-profile murder case. 'We stand with all innocent people who have lost their lives unjustly, whether in Pahalgam or elsewhere. Today's barsi is a tribute to them too,' said Balkaur. Balkaur raises safety concerns for his one-year-old son Raising serious concerns, Balkaur claimed he had been warned by certain officials about a threat to his one-year-old son, though he did not provide specific details. He also accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government of failing to deliver justice and deliberately neglecting the family's pleas. 'My wife and I tried several times to meet chief minister Bhagwant Mann. He didn't even grant us a meeting. We had hoped that the artist-MLAs elected by AAP would stand by Sidhu's family, but none of them even spoke to us,' he said. He further alleged that the family was being targeted due to their identity. 'I feel we are being punished for being Sikhs,' he added. Balkaur also slammed the BJP-led Union government, claiming that Punjabis, particularly Sikhs, are being singled out and harassed. 'I met Union home minister Amit Shah seeking justice for my son, but we received no support. Our life has been reduced to daily suffering,' he said. Moose Wala's father vows to contest 2027 elections Balkaur Singh, who is associated with the Congress, has announced his intention to contest the 2027 Punjab assembly elections to continue the fight for justice. However, he has yet to reveal which seat he plans to contest. In 2022, Sidhu Moose Wala had unsuccessfully contested the Mansa seat on a Congress ticket, losing by a significant margin. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Balkaur was considered a contender for the Bathinda seat, but the Congress fielded Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu, who lost to incumbent MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

You sell 'sindoor everywhere' but go silent in front of US: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee hits back at PM Narendra Modi

KOLKATA: CM Mamata Banerjee returned PM Narendra Modi's fire less than an hour after the latter's Alipurduar rally, accusing the BJP-led Centre of 'going silent in front of America', selling 'sindoor everywhere' and using Operation Sindoor for 'political traction'. 'Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor have become election issues, discussed in rallies in the PM's presence. Other netas are calling this election rally 'Operation Bengal' in the PM's presence,' she said, latching on to junior Union minister Sukanta Majumdar's 'Operation Bengal after Operation Sindoor' statement at the Alipurduar rally. WB CM Mamata Banerjee launches scathing attack on PM Modi, dares PM to debate against her on TV 'What Modi said today left us shocked and saddened. Is it appropriate for him and his ministers to talk about Operation Bengal... (in the same breath as) Operation Sindoor when the opposition is representing the country globally to protect national interests? This implies equating Bengal with terrorism. He is insulting Bengal and its dignity. Hold elections tomorrow if you have the courage,' she dared Modi. 'Why have the terrorists responsible for wiping the sindoor (away from our women) not been arrested yet? Big talk.... Your words fail you and you fall silent in front of America. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo They are playing politics with a serious issue, which is unacceptable,' Banerjee said, adding: 'First he was a tea seller, then a chowkidar. Now he is selling sindoor everywhere, even in election campaigns.' The CM also responded to PM Modi's 'cruelty' barbs, accusing BJP of being 'the mastermind behind riots'. 'Bengal is not cruel, it has a humane administration. What has Modi's sarkar done for country? Blue films are screened on the streets of UP. The party's MPs disrespect women, the PM should sack them first. He speaks of corruption but corruption is highest in BJP-governed states,' she said. We act if there is a complaint against our administration. What excuse does Modi have when terrorists are caught in Gujarat? You created trouble in Murshidabad and Malda. How many people were killed in Delhi? Why did the Assam CM say they would give rifles to citizens?' she asked. Banerjee then referred to Madhya Pradesh's Vyapam scam to return the PM's SSC recruitment fire: 'Who filed the court case? The CPM and the BJP (did). What happened in Vyapam in MP? How many people died? Some 10,000 teachers lost their jobs in Tripura, 69,000 teachers lost jobs in UP. But we are humane in Bengal; we will find a way. We will respect the court and do something for the teachers, too.' The Bengal CM referred to the state's schemes while slamming the centre for not paying Bengal its dues. 'You talk of roads and homes but have you given the money? We are building roads and houses on our own with state funds. Why has the money for building houses been stopped? May you live for 175 years... ayushman. But we have the Swasthya Sathi, which is a better scheme. We provide it to everyone, unlike you,' she said, accusing the centre of 'bulldozing the federal structure'.

Israel Stops Training Women Combat Soldiers Over 'Health Risks'

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has ended a pilot programme under which female soldiers due to health and fitness concerns. The trained women were to serve in "combat mobility units" that deliver equipment and supplies to infantry forces in enemy territory and recover wounded soldiers, but IDF Chief of Staff Lt-Gen Eyal Zamir decided to pull the plug on Thursday (May 29), according to a report in the Jerusalem Post. As per IDF, though the professional performance of females undergoing the combat course was strong and equal to their male counterparts, their "physical and combat fitness levels fell short of the standards required for the role". IDF added that medical data indicated potential health risks for the women if they continued the current training, particularly since its intensity was due to increase. The new pilot programme for female infantry recruits will start next year after the cancellation of the current six-month scheme. Meanwhile, women who had enrolled in the course would be offered other combat opportunities in the military if they wished to continue, or they could switch to office duties if they preferred a change. Military service in the IDF is mandatory for both sexes, barring some exceptions. Women fighters have successfully worked in several special units such as Oketz, which works with dogs, the Yahalom combat engineers, and the 669 rescue unit. Israel-Hamas war Ever since Hamas-led terrorists rampaged through southern Israeli communities and killed around 1,200 people on October 7, 2023, Tel Aviv has launched an all-out campaign to avenge the losses. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the death of Hamas' Gaza chief, Muhammad Sinwar. Muhammad Sinwar was the brother of former Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in a clash with the Israeli military in October 2024. Yahya Sinwar had masterminded the October 7 terrorist attacks.
