Behind the scenes as Greenwich's planetarium prepares to close for two years

They like to be precise about time in Greenwich. When the Royal Observatory marked its 350th anniversary on Sunday the celebration began — at the third stroke, to use the old time-signal formulation — at 3.14pm, this being the moment when John Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal, laid the foundation stone on August 10, 1675.
Twenty-five hours and 16 minutes later, give or take a few pips, my son and I were seated in the observatory's planetarium, tipped well back as if we were at the dentist's, to look upon the same heavens that Flamsteed had been given a royal warrant to chart. At 4.30pm every day throughout August, save Thursdays, the planetarium is presenting a half-hour demonstration of what the night sky looked like on that day in 1675.
Or rather what they understood it to be then, for 350 years is just a blink of an eye in cosmology and little has changed. Not all the 88 constellations recognised today had been identified by Flamsteed's time but Imo Bell, one of ten full-time astronomers at the observatory, picked out some that were known in the 17th century once the glare from modern light pollution was removed from the sky and — to an audible cry of 'woah' from many children in the theatre and perhaps a few adults — hundreds of dots of light and smears of celestial milk suddenly appeared above them on the dome.
The stick diagrams linking the stars were then overlaid with the drawings of mythical creatures and ancient heroes that had been produced for Flamsteed's posthumous Atlas Coelestis by James Thornhill, whose most admired work is the ceiling of the Painted Hall at the Royal Naval College at the foot of the hill. It was a fascinating show with the added benefit on a 34C day of being, as Bell noted, held in 'the coldest room in London', needed to cool the planetarium's four large computers as much as the audience.
The Royal Observatory, Britain's first state-funded scientific institution, was created with the objective of 'perfecting the art of navigation' by producing better star charts. Getting one over the French was an added goal. Eight years earlier, Louis XIV had opened an observatory in Paris, whose first task was to re-survey the outline of France using longitude measurements based on observations of Jupiter's moons. This led the Sun King to remark that he had lost more land to his astronomers than to his enemies.
After the Royal Society had considered sites in Hyde Park and Chelsea, they settled on the castle ruins at the top of Greenwich Park, where the avenues of sweet chestnuts that we see today were still mere saplings. Christopher Wren was asked to divert some of his attention from the creation of St Paul's Cathedral to design an observatory, which progressed with remarkable speed: from the architect being appointed, to Flamsteed moving in and making his first observation took barely 11 months.
Wren's commission was to design a building 'for the observator's habitation and a little for pomp'. A square house, later extended for Astronomers Royal who brought their families, was topped with an octagonal observation room with tall windows, the Camera Stellata. Other observatories were later added, including the fine orange-brick 1895 Altazimuth Pavilion, built to scan the sun, moon and planets with a new telescope.
Perhaps the most famous addition, even more than the green laser that has shot out at nightfall since 1999 to mark the northerly course of the prime meridian, is the large red ball that since 1833 has risen up a mast on top of Flamsteed House from 12.55pm and dropped at precisely 1pm to allow mariners on the Thames to check their chronometers. Today, it is controlled by GPS satellites. If you look closely, the ball has dimples on its surface caused by workmen playing football with it during restoration work in 1959.
By then, Greenwich was no longer a working observatory. Light pollution from electric street lamps and the effects of industry, with vibrations and smoke from the riverside power station down the hill, had an impact on the site's effectiveness, and in 1948 the Royal Observatory left Greenwich for Herstmonceux in East Sussex and then, in the 1990s, for Cambridge. The buildings were gradually opened to the public under the responsibility of the National Maritime Museum and attract more than 700,000 visitors a year.
In 2018, however, research was again conducted in Greenwich, when the computerised Annie Maunder Astrographic Telescope, named after a pioneer who had worked at the observatory in the 1890s, was installed in the Altazimuth Pavilion. This tribute to women stargazers was followed two weeks ago by the appointment of Michele Dougherty as the first female Astronomer Royal, a post that these days is an honorary one but nonetheless important as the science's most public ambassador.
Further development of the site will begin next month when the planetarium is closed for two years, and other buildings in sequence, for a project called First Light. This will create a new entrance pavilion, garden walkway and 'astronomers' court' (a space for interactive experiments and STEM learning), as well as improved access to the Great Equatorial Telescope, which is currently up a winding Victorian iron stair.
Seven refurbished galleries and four new ones will also allow a better show to some of its treasures, 100 of which have been selected by the curator, Louise Devoy, for a forthcoming book called A History in Objects. They include such oddities as the silk and wool observing suit that Nevil Maskelyne, the fifth Astronomer Royal, created in the 1760s to keep himself warm while stargazing on cold nights; a celestial alarm clock designed by Thomas Taylor in about 1827 so that astronomers could wake at the correct time to record a transit; and the 'spider forks' that captured arachnid threads used as orientation lines on the lens (the 1864 observatory inventory lists 'box of cobwebs').
Times are changing at the Royal Observatory and not just twice-yearly, when BST usurps GMT and vice versa. But one thing will remain constant and will surely be enhanced by the redevelopment: the gasps of wonder as a roomful of children have their eyes opened to the star-spangled heavens and they realise the limitless expanse of space.

Teplizumab can allow patients to live 'normal lives' without the need for insulin injections. Experts hailed the decision by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as a 'breakthrough moment' that represents a 'turning point' in how the condition is treated. About 400,000 people in the UK have type 1 diabetes, a lifelong condition which causes the immune system to attack insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin helps the body use sugar for energy, and without this hormone, blood sugar levels can become dangerously high. Type 1 diabetes needs constant management to keep blood sugar within range, with patients required to take insulin through injections or pumps. Teplizumab trains the immune system to stop attacking pancreatic cells. It is taken by an IV drip for a minimum of 30 minutes over 14 consecutive days. The drug, which is already approved in the US, has been authorised for use by the MHRA to delay the onset of stage three type 1 diabetes in adults and children aged eight or over by an average of three years. Ahmed Moussa, general manager of general medicines UK and Ireland at Sanofi, which makes teplizumab, said: 'One hundred years ago the discovery of insulin revolutionised diabetes care. Today's news marks a big step forward.' The UK is the first country in Europe to be granted a licence. Type 1 diabetes develops gradually in three stages over months or years. Stage three is usually when people start to experience blood sugar problems and are diagnosed with the condition. According to the MHRA, teplizumab is used in people with stage two type 1 diabetes, which is an earlier stage of the disease during which patients are at a high risk of progressing to stage three. Parth Narendran, a professor of diabetes medicine at the University of Birmingham and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, said: 'Teplizumab essentially trains the immune system to stop attacking the beta cells in the pancreas, allowing the pancreas to produce insulin without interference. 'This can allow eligible patients to live normal lives, delaying the need for insulin injections and the full weight of the disease's daily management by up to three years. It allows people to prepare for disease progression rather than facing an abrupt emergency presentation.' Following the decision by the MHRA, the cost-effectiveness of teplizumab will be assessed by NHS spending watchdog the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) to determine if it can be rolled out on the health service. Karen Addington, chief executive of the charity Breakthrough T1D, said: 'I am personally delighted and welcome the MHRA's approval of teplizumab. 'After years of research, clinical trials and drug development, we have an incredible breakthrough.' Reacting to the announcement, Dr Elizabeth Robertson, director of research and clinical at Diabetes UK, said: 'Today's landmark licensing of teplizumab in the UK marks a turning point in the treatment of type 1 diabetes. 'For the first time, we have a medicine that targets the root cause of the condition, offering three precious extra years free from the relentless demands of managing type 1 diabetes.' Dr Robertson added that the 'next steps are critical'. 'To ensure teplizumab reaches everyone who could benefit, we need it to be made available on the NHS, and the rollout of a screening programme to identify those with early-stage type 1 diabetes,' she said.

WASHINGTON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Astronomers have observed the calamitous result of a star that picked the wrong dance partner. They have documented what appears to be a new type of supernova, as stellar explosions are known, that occurred when a massive star tried to swallow a black hole with which it had engaged in a lengthy pas de deux. The star, which was at least 10 times as massive as our sun, and the black hole, which had a similar mass, were gravitationally bound to one another in what is called a binary system. But as the distance separating them gradually narrowed, the black hole's immense gravitational pull appears to have distorted the star - stretching it out from its spherical shape - and siphoned off material before causing it to explode. "We caught a massive star locked in a fatal tango with a black hole," said astrophysicist Alexander Gagliano of the U.S. National Science Foundation's Institute for AI and Fundamental Interactions located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a co-author of the study published this week in the Astrophysical Journal, opens new tab. "After shedding mass for years in a death spiral with the black hole, the massive star met its finale by exploding. It released more energy in a second than the sun has across its entire lifetime," Gagliano added. The explosion occurred about 700 million light-years from Earth. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km). "The gravitational pulls of the two objects were actually similar because we think they had similar masses. But the star was much larger, so it was in the process of engulfing the black hole as the black hole pulled material off of it. The star was large but puffy, and the black hole was small but mighty. The black hole won out in the end," Gagliano said. The researchers are not certain of the exact mechanism that caused the supernova. "It's unclear if the distortion triggers an instability that drives the collapse of the star, and then the leftover stellar material gets rapidly eaten by the black hole, or if the black hole completely pulls the star apart before it goes supernova," said Harvard University astrophysicist and study lead author Ashley Villar. "The star has been pulled and morphed by the black hole in complex ways," Villar added. The binary system started out with two massive stars orbiting each other as cosmic companions. But one of the two stars reached the end of its natural life cycle and exploded in a supernova, and its core collapsed to form a black hole, an extraordinarily dense object with gravity so strong that not even light can escape. "This event reveals that some supernovae can be triggered by black hole companions, giving us new insights into how some stars end their lives," Villar said. Stars that are at least eight times as massive as the sun appear destined to end their lives with a supernova. Those with a mass at least 20 times that of the sun will form a black hole after the explosion. An artificial intelligence algorithm designed to scan for unusual explosions in the cosmos in real time first detected the beginnings of the explosion, providing an alert that enabled astronomers to carry out follow-up observations immediately. By the time the explosion was completed, it had been observed by numerous ground-based and space-based telescopes. "Our AI algorithm allowed us to launch a comprehensive observational study early enough to really see the full picture for the first time," Gagliano said. Observations of the star dating to four years before the supernova revealed bright emissions that the astronomers believe were caused when the black hole guzzled material sucked off the star. For instance, the star's outer hydrogen layer appears to have been ripped off, exposing the helium layer below. The researchers observed bright emissions in the explosion's aftermath as the black hole consumed leftover stellar debris. In the end, the black hole became more massive and more powerful. Systems grouping two or more companions are quite common. Some of these multiples have a black hole as one of the companions. "Our takeaway is that the fates of stars are incredibly impacted by their companion - or companions - in life. This event gives us an exciting window into how dramatically black holes can impact the deaths of massive stars," Gagliano said.

Business studies and physics are booming, while entries for French and German have sunk to a record low, this year's A-level results show. There is also evidence that the gap in performance between private and state schools is narrowing, but there remains a sharp gender imbalance among key subjects. Here the PA news agency takes a look at some of the long-term trends in the latest exam data. – Most popular subjects: What's up and what's down? While there was no change this year in the top choices for A-levels, with maths, psychology, biology and chemistry once again occupying the first four spots, there were big changes further down the chart. Business studies appears in the top five for the first time, up from sixth place in 2024. The subject has gained steadily in popularity in recent years, rising from 13th in the rankings in 2015 to 10th in 2020, eighth in 2022, then climbing one place in each successive year. Last year's fifth most popular subject, history, has dropped to seventh place, while physics has leaped from ninth to sixth. It is the first time since at least 2000 – the earliest available archive data – that no arts or humanities subjects have appeared in the top five. As in previous years, the top subject choices vary by gender. For boys, the most popular A-levels this year were maths, physics, economics, chemistry and business studies; for girls, it was psychology, biology, maths, chemistry and sociology. – French resumes its decline The number of French A-level entries has resumed its long-term decline, more than reversing last year's unexpected rise and suggesting the long-term future of the subject is grim. There were 6,858 entries in 2025, down from 7,544 in 2024 and the lowest figure since current data began. Entries have fallen 34% in the past 10 years and 53% in the last two decades. German has also resumed its descent after a small increase in 2024, with just 2,224 entries this year, down year on year from 2,431 and another new low. Entries for German have dropped 45% in the past decade and 62% since 2005. The one piece of positive news for the 'big three' foreign languages is a slight rise in entries for Spanish, with 8,325 in 2025, up from 8,238 in 2024, though below the recent peak of 9,139 in 2021. Among the smaller modern languages, the most popular were Chinese (1,624 entries, down from 1,643 in 2024) and Russian (1,118, up from 1,044). – State v private gap narrows The gap between the proportion of A-level entries at private schools receiving top grades and those at state schools has narrowed slightly. Some 48.5% of entries at independent schools – including city training colleges – were awarded A or A* this year, compared with 25.4% of entries at state-funded schools – a gap of 23.1 percentage points. This is down from 23.9 points last year, when the figures were 48.6% for independent schools and 24.7% for state schools. But it is larger than in the pre-pandemic year of 2019, when the gap stood at 21.3 points (43.9% for independent schools, 22.6% for state schools). During the pandemic the gap widened considerably, peaking at 30.0 points in 2021. – Gender imbalance persists Computing recorded the biggest gender imbalance towards males for the sixth year in a row, with boys making up 81% of entries and girls 19% – a slight narrowing on last year, when the figures were 83% and 17%. Physics (76% boys, 24% girls), accounting (73% and 27%) and further maths (also 73% and 27%) were the other subjects skewed most heavily towards males. The biggest imbalance towards females was in the subject of health and social care, as has been the case each year since 2021. In the double award for this subject, girls made up 96% of entries and boys just 4%, while in the single award the figures were 89% and 11%. Performing/expressive arts (92% girls, 8% boys) and English literature (80% girls, 20% boys) were other subjects with predominantly female entries.
