Pete Alonso is one homer away from history.
Monday night against the Guardians, Alonso sent another ball to the stands in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 251st of his career — all with the Mets.
With that home run, Alonso now sits just one shy of Darryl Strawberry's franchise record of 252.
It took Strawberry, who represented the Mets as an All-Star seven times and finished in the top three in National League MVP balloting two times, 1,109 games from 1983-90.
Alonso, who debuted in 2019, is ready to surpass the record in fewer than 1,000 games.

Alonso's lone homer was just one part of a masterful night at the plate for the typical everyday first baseman, who started at DH. He went 4-for-5 with four RBIs in the 10-inning, 7-6 loss to the Guardians.

'I was just on time today,' Alonso said. 'Body felt good, and just felt in sync and on time today.'
His bat was a spark plug for what was a lethargic Mets offense before the sixth inning.

His three-run home run was what opened the scoring for the Mets after they saw a scoreless game turn into a five-run deficit in the blink of an eye.
In the eighth, Alonso stepped up and hit an RBI single that put the game within one run. Then, with the game tied and the bases loaded in the ninth, Alonso had a chance to end it, but he struck out swinging.
Some might think that was the most frustrating part of the night for Alonso. He thought otherwise.

'To be honest, it'd be more frustrating if we didn't do anything, if we just kind of lay down right there,' Alonso said. 'So I think it would be more frustrating that way.'
Even though Alonso did not come through in the ninth, manager Carlos Mendoza thought it was still a good night for the slugger.
'It's a perfect night for Pete, all the way until that last at bat,' Mendoza said. 'They threw fastballs by him there and they got him.'

In a recent interview, Rockets veteran Dorian Finney-Smith referenced an unofficial team mini-camp being held in September, which could further tighten this year's schedule. Media day consists of interviews with each NBA team's key players, coaches, and executives, who are asked to share perspectives about the season ahead. Because Durant's media day interview will undoubtedly consist of questions about his new team in Houston, that might be another incentive for him to wait — since he will likely be addressing the same types of topics, regardless of whether he does an earlier event. After previous superstar acquisitions, such as Dwight Howard in the 2013 offseason and Chris Paul in 2017, the Rockets held offseason events featuring both a press conference with reporters and an opportunity for the player to directly engage with the fan base. It's a safe assumption that the team would have loved to capitalize on the Durant buzz with a similar engagement event, but the team cannot mandate his appearance in a period without games. It comes down to the player's availability, and there haven't been many indications of Durant physically being in Houston this offseason. The Rockets have yet to announce locations or times for media day or training camp. That said, he never hesitated to list his preference between them. The second overall pick in the 2015 draft, D'Lo, was drafted by the Lakers. Fortunate to have the late Kobe Bryant as a teammate during his rookie season, Russell showed promise. However, he was unable to meet the desired expectations, not to mention his incident with Nick Young. Entering his third year in the league, Russell was traded to the Nets, where he showed substantial growth, including earning an All-Star selection. Nonetheless, destiny reunited him with the Lakers in 2023, but things didn't go as planned yet again. Recently, when asked about the structural differences between the Lakers and Nets, D'Lo did not mince his words. "The organization of Brooklyn is different. It's unlike any other. The performance team, the coach, everything about Brooklyn is different than you would expect, and I've been around the league, where I came from the Lakers, where the structure is not the same." Adding to it, Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton made for a better fit on the beginning with the Mavericks Heading into the 2025-26 season, Russell will be seen in yet another new uniform, this time for the Mavericks. The 29-year-old signed a two-year $13 million deal with the Dallas franchise. Sharing the backcourt with veterans like Klay Thompson and Kyrie Irving, he stands to learn a lot. Not to mention, the generational talent in Cooper Flagg, who will make his NBA debut this upcoming season. Russell also reunites with former Lakers teammate Anthony Davis. Overall, things look promising for Russell, who will also need to hold up his end of the bargain, especially when it comes to maintaining consistent output.
