It's hard to believe, it but The Hunger Games franchise has been with us since the first book arrived back in 2008. Author Suzanne Collins has continued to expand the franchise with prequel stories, making way for more book to screen adaptations in the process. Actor Sam Claflin famously played Finnick Odair in the Hunger Games movies, and recently said what most fans are thinking when comparing The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes with the new release Sunrise on the Reaping.
The history of Panem has been explored throughout these two novels, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' ending continues to inspire a debate between both moviegoers and avid readers. But fans have been especially enthusiastic about Sunrise on the Reaping, and during a conversation with Variety Claflin summed up how most of the fandom ranks the prequel books. In his words:
I thought it was a fresh take with a fresh generation. They did a wonderful job. I understand the 'Sunrise on the Reaping' book is even better.
I mean, he's not wrong. While it was fun returning to Panem for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the emotional story at the heart of Sunrise on the Reaping is especially compelling. As are the inclusion of a number of franchise favorites like Effie Trinket, Plutarch Heavensbee, Beetee, and Mags. And many fans, including myself, find it to be the superior of Collins' two prequel novels.
Getting to see past Hunger Games has fans wondering what other prequels might be in store for the franchise's future. That includes a possible Finnick-centered story, and fans hopes of this increased when Sam Claflin confirmed he recently met with director Francis Lawrence. Of course, there's no prequel book about the District 4 victor just yet, so we might have to be patient before seeing this idea come to fruition.
Generations of Hunger Games fans read the Sunrise on the Reaping novel, and are already ready to see the emotional story play out on the big screen. Haymitch's tale is filled with tragedy, and since he's already a character we know and love, the stakes feel high. And like I said, including younger version of all those characters is thrilling, and will likely make its film adaptation even more buzz worthy.
What we know about the Sunrise on the Reaping movie is limited, but casting for the highly anticipated project is already underway. Jesse Plemons was recently announced as a young Plutarch, taking on the role from the late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman. That's pretty brilliant casting in my opinion, and I can't wait to see what other actors join the cast to bring the legacy characters back to life.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is currently expected to arrive in theaters on November 20, 2026. Since its not part of the 2025 movie release list, fans are left to re-read the book while we wait.

Splitgate 2's official launch is just days away as devs tease 'a massive surprise' which will be unveiled at Summer Game Fest
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Splitgate 2 has been in its open beta for about a month, with the first-person arena shooter opening its doors at the beginning of May alongside "a massive amount of new content", and now developers 1047 Games are gearing up for its main release. If it seems like this happened in the blink of an eye, that's because it did. Not only has 1047 Games announced the official launch of Splitgate 2, but the date for the 1.0 release is just a few days away, on June 6. 2025 games: This year's upcoming releasesBest PC games: Our all-time favoritesFree PC games: Freebie festBest FPS games: Finest gunplayBest RPGs: Grand adventuresBest co-op games: Better together "1047 Games also unleashed a surprisingly emotional new trailer today to mark the game's launch date, giving fans a touching look at the pressure and grit it takes to be a professional ace in the cutthroat, futuristic world of Splitgate," a press release says. The trailer offers a different perspective on what it means to play an FPS game. It sees someone from the Sabrask faction try to come to terms with the fact that every time they die, they just instantly come back, never getting to rest or join their loved ones in the next life. As the trailer progresses, the character does somewhat come to terms with his fate, deciding to put his feelings aside for the sake of his mission. Thanks to this, he begins to work better with his team, and they actually get the job done. I'd never really thought about the anguish the characters that I play go through when they resurrect after I get them killed. But after watching this trailer, I feel really bad for putting them through such an existential crisis thanks to my inability to learn from my mistakes. The words "Get up" are also shown at the end of the trailer, a good reminder for all my fellow competitive FPS players out there: You can't end on a loss. Emotional trailer aside, 1047 Games also wants to remind players that just because the official launch is just around the corner, it doesn't mean that they should toss the open beta aside. It'll keep going through to launch and offers "the option to purchase sweet cosmetics for looking good while locking in, or to grab the Beta battle pass and get a head start on your stats." You'll also have plenty of time to complete the battle pass as it won't reset even after Splitgate 2 officially launches on June 6. But that's not all, 1047 Games has one more surprise up its sleeve. "1047 Games has yet to reveal the biggest part of Splitgate 2," a press release says. "A massive surprise is still in store at the upcoming Summer Game Fest livestream." I'm not sure what this will entail, but considering how much 1047 Games put into Splitgate 2's open beta launch, I'm sure it'll be one to watch out for.

The Weeknd Might Not Be Retiring His Music Persona After All
The Weeknd has teased that Hurry Up Tomorrow— his sixth album and upcoming film of the same name— also marks the end of the artist fans have grown to love for over 15 years. However, that may not necessarily be the case. While promoting the film at CinemaCon 2025, Abel Tesfaye told EW that this moment feels like both a death and resurrection. 'It feels like it [the end of the Weeknd]. I mean, I've kind of toyed with the idea in the past with albums,' he noted. 'But it could also just be a rebirth. Who knows?' Back in January, the 35-year-old announced plans to retire his alter ego. 'It's a headspace I've gotta get into that I just don't have any more desire for,' he explained to Variety. 'You have a persona, but then you have the competition of it all. It becomes this rat race: more accolades, more success, more shows, more albums, more awards and more No. 1s. It never ends until you end it.' Hurry Up Tomorrow marks the conclusion in the trilogy that began with 2020's After Hours, which was followed by 2022's Dawn FM. The film follows a fictionalized version of himself, also named Abel, who gets taken on an insane ride by a seductive stranger, Anima (Jenna Ortega). Director Trey Edward Shults, shared with EW in February that he 'tried to make the movie in a way where, for his fans and people who want to approach it at that level, I hope it's very satisfying and you get a good meal out of it.' Shults confirmed that it was an 'absolute possibility' that the movie would be The Weeknd's last hurrah chapter, adding 'For people that aren't his fans and don't know anything about him or even care about the final capping of the Weeknd, I think you still have a great movie to go through.' The Weeknd considers the film to be 'really introspective and cathartic.' It hits theaters this Friday. The Weeknd's ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow' Earns $3.3 Million Box Office Debut
The Weeknd's Hurry Up Tomorrow feature film experienced the chart-topping success shared by the singer's album of the same name. According to Variety, the movie, which stars the singer as well as Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan, earned $3.3 million in its opening against a $15 million budget. The debut landed Hurry Up Tomorrow at No. 6 at the box office. Directed by Trey Edward Shults, Hurry Up Tomorrow stars the Grammy-winning artist as a musician plagued by insomnia. In the film, he is pulled into an odyssey with a stranger who begins to unravel the very core of his existence. 'I tried to make the movie in a way where, for his fans and people who want to approach it at that level, I hope it's very satisfying and you get a good meal out of it,' explained Shults. The chart-topping singer also detailed his motivation behind the thrilling project. 'Failure is the best school,' relayed the 35-year-old to The New York Times. 'This film is emotionally cathartic. It brought the love back, the joy back into what I always loved about film.' In a conversation with HypeBeast, Ortega elaborated on the 'environment' created by Shults while filming. 'Working with Trey is so singular. I can't compare it to any other experience that I've had on set, and I've been doing this for over 12 years. I love challenges. I love trying new things. Trey created an environment where it felt like you were free to try whatever you wanted,' described the 22-year-old. 'Music is such an important part of my life and who I am as a person, so having music intertwined was exciting — getting to watch the companion process come together in real time. Being able to combine film and music — the combination of the score and a facial expression — has the power to ignite something in people. This is a perfect marriage of the two.'
