Splitgate 2's official launch is just days away as devs tease 'a massive surprise' which will be unveiled at Summer Game Fest
Splitgate 2 has been in its open beta for about a month, with the first-person arena shooter opening its doors at the beginning of May alongside "a massive amount of new content", and now developers 1047 Games are gearing up for its main release.
If it seems like this happened in the blink of an eye, that's because it did. Not only has 1047 Games announced the official launch of Splitgate 2, but the date for the 1.0 release is just a few days away, on June 6.

"1047 Games also unleashed a surprisingly emotional new trailer today to mark the game's launch date, giving fans a touching look at the pressure and grit it takes to be a professional ace in the cutthroat, futuristic world of Splitgate," a press release says.
The trailer offers a different perspective on what it means to play an FPS game. It sees someone from the Sabrask faction try to come to terms with the fact that every time they die, they just instantly come back, never getting to rest or join their loved ones in the next life.
As the trailer progresses, the character does somewhat come to terms with his fate, deciding to put his feelings aside for the sake of his mission. Thanks to this, he begins to work better with his team, and they actually get the job done.
I'd never really thought about the anguish the characters that I play go through when they resurrect after I get them killed. But after watching this trailer, I feel really bad for putting them through such an existential crisis thanks to my inability to learn from my mistakes. The words "Get up" are also shown at the end of the trailer, a good reminder for all my fellow competitive FPS players out there: You can't end on a loss.
Emotional trailer aside, 1047 Games also wants to remind players that just because the official launch is just around the corner, it doesn't mean that they should toss the open beta aside. It'll keep going through to launch and offers "the option to purchase sweet cosmetics for looking good while locking in, or to grab the Beta battle pass and get a head start on your stats." You'll also have plenty of time to complete the battle pass as it won't reset even after Splitgate 2 officially launches on June 6.
But that's not all, 1047 Games has one more surprise up its sleeve. "1047 Games has yet to reveal the biggest part of Splitgate 2," a press release says. "A massive surprise is still in store at the upcoming Summer Game Fest livestream." I'm not sure what this will entail, but considering how much 1047 Games put into Splitgate 2's open beta launch, I'm sure it'll be one to watch out for.

A giant octopus reached for a filmmaker's camera. In a split-second decision, he let go of the camera

Underwater filmmaker John Roney has completed around 1,500 dives in his career, but a dive earlier this month off the coast of Vancouver Island will likely remain a highlight of his career spent underwater – because an octopus borrowed his camera and proceeded to take footage of its web of suction-cupped tentacles. Roney (@roneydives) was diving with friend and diver Chris Mullen in an area known for housing large octopus when a particularly large Giant Pacific Octopus took an interest in the camera equipment. The creature had begun exploring the equipment with its tentacles when Roney made a decision: to let go of the camera. 'The moment it reached out, I could see it was curious,' Roney told Digital Camera World. 'It quickly engulfed my entire camera rig, exploring it with its suckers. I realized this was a rare chance to see what it would do if I stepped back completely, so I let it have the camera and take the lead. That choice gave us a perspective you almost never get.' The decision to let go of the camera resulted in a rare glimpse of an octopus' underbelly as the create took the camera and swam with it while continuing to explore the equipment, eventually hitting the button to stop the recording with one of its suction cups and, once its curiosity was satisfied, dropping the camera to the ocean floor. The camera in question was a Panasonic Lumix GH6, which was encased in a Nauticam housing, and survived the animal encounter. 'It's a tough setup, which is lucky because an animal that size can be incredibly strong,' Roney said. That's particularly lucky considering one biologist says the way the octopus handled the camera is similar to how the animals act when they find something 'potentially edible.' Marine biologist Jennifer Mather told CBC News said the octopus wasn't actually trying to take a selfie, but that octopuses are curious creatures and will often pick up objects and put them underneath their web of tentacles. After the large octopus explored the camera, the creature then explored Mullen, reaching out to give the diver a tentacled 'hug,' which, naturally, Roney caught on camera. The resulting video footage has garnered the attention of news outlets and racked up thousands of likes on social media. 'It's been amazing to see how many people are fascinated by it,' Roney said. 'I think it's the combination of a giant Pacific octopus's intelligence, its otherworldly nature, and the unusual perspective from inside its arms that really captured people's imaginations. If the video gets more people curious about these animals and the ocean they live in, that's a win.' Out of the roughly 1,500 dives that he's completed over the course of his career, he estimates that he's only had two encounters with an octopus that close. The octopus approached the two divers after they went by – an important distinction, as approaching an octopus on a dive can distress the creature. Along with being an underwater filmmaker, Roney is also a television editor, including editing work on a series with Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen. Roney's underwater films have taken him all over the world and have been part of several documentaries. She lived much of her life in the public eye and spoke about it with remarkable candor, from her marriage to then-Prince Charles to the instability she experienced as a child of divorce. Interestingly, she was not an avid horse-rider, although after she became a member of the Royal Family she sometimes partook in the activity. 1980 These photos served as many people's introduction to the future Princess Diana. In 1980, she was working as a nanny for an American family as well as nursery teacher's assistant at the Young England School, while living with three roommates in a West London flat. 1980 Once Diana's and Charles' relationship became public knowledge, the paparazzi began aggressively snapping photos of her (which was a practice that would continue her whole life). Before their marriage, many photos like this would be taken of Diana walking around London. 1980 Throughout her life, Diana could be seen attending the Wimbledon tennis tournament with other family members and royals. Here she wore a red David Sassoon maternity gown; Prince William would be born three months later. circa 1980s Diana loved polka dots and wore them often, although the floppy wide-brim black hat was slightly more unusual for the royal. The caption doesn't specify what procession Diana and Charles were attending. But it was smiles all round for the young couple. 1983 If that figure looks familiar, there's a good reason. "Diana, Princess of Wales, wearing a blue velvet suit with a mandarin collar designed by Caroline Charles and a veiled hat by John Boyd, looks at a Royal Doulton figurine of Prince Charles, Prince of Wales playing polo, during a visit to the International Spring Fair at the National Exhibition Centre." 1984 Diana did not always wear her hair longer and pulled back, but she did begin experimenting with her style in the 1980s. This was a gray, almost menswear-adjacent Jan Van Velden coat; Diana was visiting a Dr. Barnardo's children's home in Newham, London. 1984 Diana stopped to chat with her husband as he rode by while playing polo at the Guards Polo Club in Windsor. Diana would give birth to their second child, Prince Harry, later that year in 1984. They both are at their charming best in The Lost City, an action/adventure comedy that is a solid, easy watch from the last few years. In the movie, Bullock plays an author who is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (played by Daniel Radcliffe) who believes her most recent book reveals clues to a real ancient lost city. It falls to her cover model (Tatum) to try and rescue her. Copshop (2021) Under-the-radar crime thriller with a fun Gerard Butler performance is streaming as of August 11 There's a large fan base for Gerard Butler's crime movies Den of Thieves and Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, but in my opinion, Copshop is just as fun and is a far superior movie than the Den of Thieves franchise, and we still get Butler showing his rougher side. In Copshop, a con artist (Frank Grillo) attempts to hide from a lethal assassin (Butler) by getting himself arrested. However, the assassin follows him into the station, with only a rookie cop (Alexis Louder) on duty to handle the situation. Copshop is "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes. Alien: Earth The first two episodes of the sci-fi TV series premiere on Hulu on August 12 The Xenomorphs have been terrorizing space for almost 50 years, but they are about to terrorize Earth in the FX/Hulu original series Alien: Earth from Fargo creator Noah Hawley. With a cast of relatively lesser-known actors, save for Timothy Olyphant, Alien: Earth is one of the more interesting summer TV shows we're getting this year and is worth giving a try. John Wick movies The entire John Wick franchise starts streaming on Hulu on August 15 Not one, not two, not three, but all four John Wick movies arrive on Hulu this week. The mega-action franchise, starring Keanu Reeves as the world's most dangerous assassin out for revenge against those who have wronged him, has spawned beyond the confines of these four movies (most recently with the spinoff movie Ballerina), and we're even getting a John Wick 5 it seems. But these four movies (John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, John Wick: Chapter 4) remain the gold standard. Stand Up to Cancer A special live stream of the Stand Up to Cancer fundraising event takes place on August 15 Stand Up to Cancer raises money for cancer research, and one of their biggest events is the Stand Up to Cancer event, taking place for the ninth time on August 15. Hulu will have a special live stream of the event that begins at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT, with host Sheryl Crow and appearances and performances from celebrities, including Dolly Parton.
