4 Traits Outperforming Stocks Possess

Globe and Mail21 hours ago
Investors are always looking for stocks that deliver robust gains, trying to squeeze the most out of their buck. Of course, finding big-time winners is much easier said than done, but investors can still deploy a basic framework that puts them on the path to reaping outsized gains.
But what drives market outperformance?
Let's take a closer look at a few common traits among companies delivering outsized gains.
Robust Sales Growth is Key
Sales growth is vital, as it's the foundation of generating profits. Strong revenue generation allows companies to achieve scaling efficiencies, generate continuous shareholder value, and many other clear benefits.
A clear-cut example of this has been Nvidia NVDA over the last year, whose shares have soared on the back of rock-solid sales growth within its Data Center.
Margins Are Critical
Margin performance reveals how efficiently a company operates, showing whether it's extracting more profit from each dollar of sales. Expansion indicates that a company is operating more efficiently, with better cost controls and other operational processes driving improved financial health.
Over the last several years, we've seen many companies flex their pricing power, namely subscription services such as Netflix NFLX, without experiencing a notable drop in subscriptions. The result has been a nice boost across their margins, with shares climbing as a result.
Innovation Keeps You Ahead of the Competition
Innovation is crucial for a company to stay relevant, helping it maintain and expand its current market share. Nvidia is again a clear-cut example of this favorable development, whose innovation within artificial intelligence (AI) has launched shares and put it at the forefront of market headlines.
Earnings Estimates Drive Near-Term Performance
Favorable earnings estimate revisions are key for a stock to move higher, precisely where the Zacks Rank comes into play.
The Zacks Rank uses four factors related to earnings estimates to classify stocks into five groups, ranging from 'Strong Buy' to 'Strong Sell.' Importantly, it allows individual investors to take advantage of trends in earnings estimate revisions and benefit from the power of institutional investors.
Bottom Line
All investors look to reap outsized gains.
When it comes to outperformance, several factors, including robust sales growth, margin expansion, innovation, and favorable earnings estimate revisions, are all contributing factors.
Radical New Technology Could Hand Investors Huge Gains
Quantum Computing is the next technological revolution, and it could be even more advanced than AI.
While some believed the technology was years away, it is already present and moving fast. Large hyperscalers, such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Oracle, and even Meta and Tesla, are scrambling to integrate quantum computing into their infrastructure.
Senior Stock Strategist Kevin Cook reveals 7 carefully selected stocks poised to dominate the quantum computing landscape in his report, Beyond AI: The Quantum Leap in Computing Power.

Aircraft Actuators Market to Reach USD 13.73 Billion by 2030, Growing at a CAGR of 6.21%

"Aircraft Actuators Market" Mordor Intelligence has published a new report on the Aircraft Actuators Market offering a comprehensive analysis of trends, growth drivers, and future projections. Introduction The Aircraft Actuators Market plays a vital role in modern aviation, as actuators are key components that convert energy into motion to control various aircraft functions. They are essential for operating flight-control surfaces such as flaps, ailerons, rudders, and elevators, as well as systems like landing gear, braking, and even cabin seating. With the global aerospace sector expanding, the demand for reliable and efficient actuators continues to rise across commercial, military, and business aviation segments. Key Market Trends Electrification of Aircraft Systems: Electrical and electromechanical actuators are steadily replacing traditional hydraulic and pneumatic systems. This shift is linked to the aviation industry's focus on lighter components, reduced maintenance, and improved energy efficiency. More-electric aircraft designs are driving this adoption, with OEMs integrating electric actuators in secondary systems such as landing gear, thrust reversers, and flight surfaces. Strong Demand from Commercial Aviation: Commercial airlines remain the largest consumers of actuators, with backlogs in single-aisle programs like the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo ensuring steady demand. These actuators are essential for flight-control functions such as ailerons, elevators, rudders, and flaps. The market benefits from continuous fleet expansion, rising air passenger traffic, and the replacement of aging aircraft with more efficient models. Aftermarket Expansion with Retrofit Opportunities: Airlines are increasingly investing in actuator retrofits to extend the operational lifespan of fleets. A key focus is on integrating health-monitoring sensors within actuator systems to enable predictive maintenance. These upgrades help reduce unscheduled downtime, optimize performance, and lower lifecycle costs, making the aftermarket segment an important growth area. Dominance of Linear Actuators: Linear actuators currently account for the majority of the market share due to their widespread use across primary flight controls, landing gear, and braking systems. Their strength lies in handling high-load applications that are central to safe aircraft operation. While rotary and other types are expanding, linear actuators are expected to remain dominant in the near term due to their reliability and established role. Time for a Sector Rotation Away from Tech? ETFs in Focus

U.S. stocks slipped on Aug. 19, 2025 following a sharp decline in tech shares. The tech-heavy Nasdaq-100-based exchange-traded fund Invesco QQQ Trust QQQ lost 1.4% on Aug. 19, 2025. The pressure came after weakness in stocks like Palantir PLTR and NVIDIA NVDA weighed on the broader market on Tuesday. PLTR shares slumped 9.4% and NVIDIA shares retreated about 3% on Aug. 19, 2025. Palantir shares surged more than 150% from their April low heading into its second-quarter earnings, when the company reported quarterly revenue above $1 billion for the first time. However, data from Barchart showed that Tuesday's decline marked the stock's longest losing streak since March, as quoted on Yahoo Finance. Shift Away From Big Tech? Investor enthusiasm for Big Tech appears to be fading, with other sectors beginning to show renewed strength. The broader market rally is starting to show signs of rotation beyond Big Tech, the Yahoo Finance article indicated. Home Depot HD added some optimism after reporting earnings that showed a boost in U.S. sales, pushing its stock price higher. The HD stock advanced 3.2% on Aug. 19, 2025. Is AI Market Forming a Bubble? OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has recently suggested that the artificial intelligence (AI) industry is currently experiencing a bubble fear, as quoted on CNBC. He indicated that while AI represents one of the most significant technological shifts in decades, the AI euphoria has led to overinflated expectations from investors. Altman sees similarity between the current environment to the dot-com boom of the late 1990s, which was hit hard when many Internet companies failed to materialize the euphoria into profits. The concerns intensified earlier this year when the 'Magnificent Seven' had fallen from grace due to the rise of cheaper-cost AI companies (e.g., DeepSeek) and individual Big Tech companies' ability to handle broader macro uncertainty. The AI development at Big Tech has raised questions among some investors about whether current spending levels in AI are sustainable. Despite ChatGPT-Fame OpenAI's huge success and its annual recurring revenue projection to top $20 billion this year, the company remains unprofitable. Nasdaq-100 ETF in Focus Most AI biggies have exposure to the Nasdaq-100-based ETF Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (QQQ). The P/E ratio of QQQ stands at 59.27X. The 10-year range of the P/E ratio is 19.7X to 59.46X. The median P/E of the past 10 years is 25.8X. This shows the overvaluation concerns associated with QQQ. However, the price-to-book (P/B) ratio of QQQ is currently 3.6X, which is the lowest value considering the past 10-year range. The 10-year median P/B is 6.03X, per Hence, the sudden crash of AI euphoria (if there is any) may not hurt QQQ that hard. Still, investors should be mindful of relentless AI investing going forward. Their portfolio may need diversification at the current juncture. Rely on Safe Sector Consumer Staples This is a safe sector as it is non-cyclical in nature. The consumer staples sector tends to do well even amid economic growth slowdown and high inflation. Since consumers have to buy staples products even if they cut back on their discretionary spending, big manufacturers of food and beverages normally have the power to pass on the increase in costs to customers. This puts focus on iShares U.S. Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) (read: Invest Like Warren Buffett With These ETFs). Value ETFs At a One-Month High Value stocks normally offer investors stability due to lower valuations and steady dividends. They can outperform during periods of market rotation away from high-growth sectors. In a volatile market, dividend ETFs normally come to rescue. The hunt for dividends in the equity market is always on, irrespective of how it is behaving. Probably this is why, S&P 500 Pure Value Invesco ETF RPV and Morningstar Dividend Leaders ETF FDL have hit a one-month high lately.
