Katibas rep calls for unified association to drive development, strengthen community voice in Sg Rassau, Btg Igan
SIBU (April 27): Residents in the Sungai Rassau and Batang Igan area have been encouraged to form a unified association to effectively channel development-related matters to the Sarawak government.
In stating this, Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan said the proposed association would serve a broader purpose than the current Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK) which typically represented individual longhouses.
Instead, he said this association would represent all longhouses in the Rassau area collectively, allowing for more coordinated planning and communication.
'The Rassau area holds significant potential for agricultural development, particularly for rice cultivation or shrimp farming.
'All these plans, however, require the residents of Rassau to unite under the banner of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), to support the area's transformation,' he said in his speech during the 'Randau Pemansang' programme here on Friday.
Organised by the JKKK of Rumah Salim Unang, Sungai Rassau, Batang Igan Tengah, the event was graced by Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu.
Also present at the event was a political secretary to the Premier of Sarawak and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Bawang Assan branch chief Romeo Christopher Tegong and Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman Councillor Kevin Lau.
Lau highlighted the significance of the programme in disseminating accurate and timely information to the community, while also serving as a platform to reinforce unity across the diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds. Batang Igan lead Lidam Assan Sungai Rassau unified association

Embrace patriotism, uphold unity, councillor calls on fellow Malaysians
Lau holds up the Jalur Gemilang after officiating at the 'Jiwa@Komuniti Madani National Day and Malaysia Day' programme in SJKC Guong Ming. SIBU (Aug 20): The contributions, especially the sacrifices, of the nation's forefathers in liberating the country from colonial rule should serve as a powerful reminder and source of inspiration for all Malaysians, especially the younger generation, in upholding Malaysia's sovereignty and unity. In highlighting this, Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) councillor Kevin Lau, who chairs its standing committee for public health and environment, said the independence that Malaysians enjoy today did not come easy. 'Independence was not handed to us on a silver platter. It was earned through courage, unity, and the fighting spirit of our predecessors, who refused to let our land remain under foreign domination. 'We must continue to embrace their patriotic spirit in preserving the harmony and freedom that we now enjoy,' he said when officiating at the 'Jiwa@Komuniti Madani National Day and Malaysia Day' programme at SJKC Guong Ming, Sungai Bidut here yesterday. Also present were Sibu District Information officer Zaini Morshidi, SJKC Guong Ming headmistress Yek Poh Ngiik, and Sungai Bidut Madani Community head Nambang Tandang. Adding on, Lau emphasised the importance of instilling patriotism in the younger generation, saying that unity and respect among Malaysia's multi-ethnic society must be nurtured from a young age. 'We want our children to grow up in a safe and peaceful environment, and this can only be achieved if we continue to defend the spirit of unity passed down by our freedom fighters.' Meanwhile, Zaini in his remarks called upon fellow Malaysians to show respect for Jalur Gemilang, particularly throughout the ongoing National Month period. 'This is not something to be taken lightly. Displaying the national flag incorrectly is an insult to our country's dignity. 'Most of these incidents are happening in Peninsular Malaysia,' he pointed out. Zaini also advised everyone to avoid spreading mistakes on social media, especially those involving the national flag. 'Instead, offer polite correction. Do not rush to make things viral. If you see a mistake, advise those who make it respectfully. 'We are here to resolve issues, not make them worse.' He also called upon parents and teachers to keep an open mind in educating children, so as to help them navigate the digital world without losing sight of patriotic values and national identity. PBDS: Ensure 13MP delivers real gains for Dayak community
Dr John Brian Anthony KUCHING (Aug 19): Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) permanent chairman Dr John Brian Anthony has called on the federal government to ensure that the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) truly benefits the Dayak community. 'We urge the government to ensure that the 13MP is not merely rhetoric on paper, but a reality implemented for the prosperity and future of the Dayak people,' he said in a press statement today. John Brian acknowledged the progress achieved under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), such as allowances for Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK), rural clean water supply projects, hybrid solar power systems in remote areas, and proposals to upgrade roads and hospitals in Dayak-majority communities. 'These initiatives have brought tangible benefits to the grassroots level,' he noted. Looking ahead to 13MP, John Brian urged the government to ensure that all policies and development programmes genuinely reach the Dayak people. He stressed that all delayed or abandoned projects from the 12MP must be completed without further postponement to prevent rural communities from being left behind in national development. John Brian also emphasised the importance of creating new employment opportunities in the clean energy sector, especially through the development of the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub. He said the initiative should serve as a platform to train and uplift Dayak youth into high-value industries. He added that Dayak entrepreneurs must also be empowered with access to financing, technology, and markets within the Bumiputera economic framework. 'As a party committed to safeguarding the rights of the Dayak people, PBDS will continue to be the conscience and voice of the community.'

Join NGOs, drive nation-building efforts, Minister tells youths
Lee (seated centre) and (from fourth left) Lau, Yong, Tan, Candy, Yee pose with the judges and top 30 finalists for the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) Awards. MIRI (Aug 18): Youths should consider joining non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as the Junior Chamber International (JCI) to cultivate positive values, leadership qualities, and contribute to nation-building, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. Lee said society today needs more young people who can propose solutions and drive constructive progress, rather than those who only criticise and create problems. 'JCI is an international organisation that promotes positive change. They want to develop our young people into future leaders so that we will have a better world and a better future,' said Lee. 'This is why I say JCI is a very good youth organisation, and I would like to call on more youths to be part of it,' he said during a dinner announcing the Top 30 finalists for the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) Awards at a hotel here on Saturday. Lee, who is also a JCI Senator, stressed that the first step towards creating positive change is cultivating a positive mindset. He added that youths are the future leaders of the country, and it is vital that they are empowered with positive values and constructive thinking to drive change in various aspects of society. Lee also noted that the TOYM Awards not only recognise individual achievements but also celebrate the wider impact these young leaders have on the community and the nation. 'TOYM adopts internationally recognised nomination and selection systems, giving young people the chance to build global networks, exchange ideas with outstanding achievers, and represent Malaysia on the world stage,' he said. 'Tonight, we are honouring not only the personal successes of our 30 finalists but also their contributions to society in various fields.' He also reminded the finalists that being part of TOYM opens doors to international exposure and opportunities. 'Young leaders should look beyond Malaysia and think globally. With rapid technological advancement and the rise of artificial intelligence, we must keep pace with global trends and challenges,' he added. Meanwhile, organising chairlady Candy Yong said this year's TOYM received more than 100 nominations from various fields, reflecting strong encouragement from youths nationwide. The final Top 10 winners will be announced at a gala event at Pullman Hotel Miri on Sept 19. Present at the dinner were Pujut assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii; Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Youth chief, Councillor Leslie Lau; JCI Malaysia National president Tan Wei Jian; and JCI Miri president Sam Yong.
