A recent post from the New England Patriots, celebrating LGBTQ+ pride and featuring the rainbow pride flag, has sparked backlash from MAGA.
Newsweek has reached out to the Patriots outside of regular working hours via email for comment.
Why It Matters
June is officially Pride Month, coinciding with the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a series of protests for gay liberation. This year's Pride month comes at a critical time for LGBTQIA+ people.
In January, shortly after his return to the White House, President Donald Trump's State Department enacted a "one flag policy," banning U.S. embassies and overseas missions from flying pride or Black Lives Matter flags. The Trump administration has also taken multiple steps to unravel protections for transgender people.

What To Know
In a post on Sunday, June 1, the New England Patriots wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "We celebrate together." The post included a picture of a large pride flag at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts and has been viewed 6.7 million times as of reporting.
It's not the first time that the New England Patriots have celebrated Pride, having shared a similar photo of the Pride flag at the Gillette Stadium on X over the past five years.
The backlash to the post from MAGA supporters has been swift. Some social media users have shared edited versions of the photo, where the pride flag is replaced with an American flag, writing that they have "fixed" the image.
The account @HumbleCommish wrote on X: "You don't have to do this anymore," in a reply viewed 24,000 times.
@RealConnorOil wrote on X, in a post viewed 35,000 times: "And you call yourself patriots... SHAME ON YOU!" and @fudreaper_ wrote in a post on X viewed 37,000 times: "No one actually wants to see this. Take it down."
However, other social media users have expressed support for the New England Patriots post and criticized the response from MAGA.
@iequalsiplus1 wrote on X: "I love this as it shows the true hate from MAGA. Thank you @Patriots for allowing the true colors of Christian MAGA's to show."

@DocDoctorDO, a doctor, wrote on X in a post viewed 113,600 times: "I think these replies are the exact reason why this is so needed. Never seen so much hate for no reason. Luckily the hate is confirmation as to why stuff like this is gonna stay every year."

Tenants say church took down Pride decorations at DC apartment building
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The District is decorated for WorldPride with rainbow bunting and banners everywhere. But there's conflict and confusion at an apartment building in Northwest. Renters at 2014 13th Street said they got a reprieve to keep their decorations, only to see them ripped down. 'We just decided it's WorldPride. So I asked the girls–it's a three-unit building–I asked them if they were interested in doing it. They were really excited about it. So I bought some decorations and I put them up,' said tenant Jay Richards. Confusion, concern around Dupont Circle ahead of big WorldPride weekend Hours after Richards put them up, management company EJF Rentals told the renters they had to take them down by June 1 because the decorations were not 'in line with property guidelines.' Richards pushed back, but EJF said there was a provision in the lease that they couldn't decorate in shared exterior spaces. They were given a deadline of Tuesday, June 3, at 1 p.m. to take down the decorations or have them removed. 'I want to be a good neighbor. You know, we are willing to take them down right after Pride,' Richards said. 'I wanted to leave them up all month.' After DC News Now reached out, EJF said they could keep it up through Monday as a compromise. EJF Real Estate Services is proud to support the LGBTQ+ community. We've been an official sponsor of the DC Pride Parade for many years and will be out there again this Saturday with our staff and company van, standing for inclusion, respect, and community. We manage 2014 13th Street NW on behalf of the adjacent church, which owns the property. As the property manager, we are responsible for enforcing the lease, which includes a provision restricting decorations in shared exterior spaces. We've heard directly from residents who requested to keep their Pride decorations up through the weekend in celebration of the parade, with a commitment to remove them by Monday. While we remain mindful of our responsibility to both the lease and our client, we believe this is a respectful and reasonable approach. EJF will not be removing the decorations ourselves and is honoring the residents' plan, trusting they will follow through as promised. We respect the rights of our clients and the obligations of the lease, and we also believe in supporting thoughtful, inclusive communities. In this case, we are doing our best to navigate both. EJF stands with our owners, residents, and broader community as we continue to work towards fostering respectful and inclusive environments. Matthew Greeves, Founder, EJF Man seen tearing down Dupont Circle Pride decorations; DC police investigating But the building is owned by Walker Memorial Church, right next door. Tuesday night at 7:20 p.m., the church's custodian walked over and cut down the decorations that extended from the front door to the fence and along the fence. Richards took video as it happened. 'We've been really friendly with the custodian himself. And I just feel awful,' Richards said. 'I feel awful for him. I mean, I guess he had to do his job, but that was, it was just awful to see.' Richards said it's important to celebrate who he is and the community at large, especially when many people in the LGBTQ community are under attack. 'The management company told us that they wouldn't tear it down. But I guess the church decided they had to tear it down and they tore it down,' Richards said. Richards said they also put these American flags in the ground along with the Pride decorations. The American flags were left behind. Richards is looking forward to the weekend with friends from out of town. 'I'm just looking forward to a good energy in a time that feels like a lot of people, including myself, are under attack,' Richards said. Walker Memorial Baptist Church sent an email late Tuesday night to renters: Good evening Tenants of 2014 13th Street, NW: We write to notify you that the decorations placed outside of the property are in the process of being and will be removed. Decorations on the outside of the property or common areas regardless of the event, holiday, season, occasion, or reason violate the lease terms. You were notified of this violation on Thursday, May 29, 2025, and asked to remove the decorations by June 1, 2025. You refused to remove the decorations. You were then provided an extension to remove the decorations by Tuesday, June 3, 2025, by 1 pm. You again refused to comply, and instead interfered with and obstructed the process of removal. This is not about subject matter. The mission of the Walker Memorial Baptist Church is a prayerful congregation, walking in the spirit, bringing souls to Christ. That is our focus. We seek unity, not division, through our lease requirement that there be no decorations on the outside of the property or common areas. In doing so, we avoid arbitrary decision-making and the need to distinguish between the content or subject matter of any decorations. Otherwise, this would necessarily distract from our mission, tenants' peace (including future tenants) at the property, neighbors, and our work and presence in the community. Going forward, we kindly request that you abide by the lease terms. Walker Memorial Baptist Church Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Trump's Haste Begets Lawlessness
Last week, a federal court ruled that President Donald Trump had exceeded his statutory authority by imposing a raft of tariffs based on the "national emergency" supposedly caused by the longstanding U.S. trade deficit. Those tariffs are part of an alarming pattern: In his rush to enact his agenda, Trump frequently treats legal constraints as inconveniences that can be overridden by executive fiat. The U.S. Court of International Trade rejected Trump's reliance on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to justify sweeping import taxes he announced in February and April. The three-judge panel said that 48-year-old law, which does not even mention tariffs and had never been used this way before, does not authorize the president to "impose unlimited tariffs on goods from nearly every country in the world." That decision did not affect tariffs that Trump has imposed or proposed under different statutes, such as his taxes on cars, steel, and aluminum. But by invoking the IEEPA, Trump hoped to avoid the specific rationales and sometimes lengthy procedures those laws mandate. Trump's immigration crackdown features similar legal shortcuts. After he asserted the power to summarily deport alleged members of a Venezuelan gang as "alien enemies," for example, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that they had a due process right to contest that designation. That decision did not address Trump's dubious interpretation of the 227-year-old Alien Enemies Act. But several federal judges, including a Trump appointee, subsequently concluded that it made no sense to portray gang members as "natives, citizens, denizens, or subjects" of a "hostile nation or government" that had launched an "invasion or predatory incursion against the territory of the United States." As with tariffs, Trump had a more legally defensible option: deportation of unauthorized residents under the Immigration and Nationality Act. But in both cases, he chose the course he thought would avoid pesky procedural requirements. Something similar happened when Immigration and Customs Enforcement suddenly terminated thousands of records in the database of foreign students with visas authorizing them to attend American universities. Although that move was described as part of a "Student Criminal Alien Initiative," it affected many people without disqualifying criminal records—in some cases, without any criminal records at all. Those terminations "reflect an instinct that has become prevalent in our society to effectuate change: move fast and break things," U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White wrote when he issued a preliminary injunction against the initiative on May 22. "That instinct must be checked when it conflicts with established principles of law." The same instinct is apparent in Trump's conflict with Harvard University. The administration froze more than $2 billion in federal research grants to Harvard, ostensibly because the university, by tolerating antisemitism on campus, had failed to meet its "responsibility to uphold civil rights laws." That decision ignored the legal process for rescinding federal funding based on such alleged violations. The process includes "a lot of steps, but they're important," the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression notes. "They protect students by making sure colleges live up to their obligations. And they protect colleges by making sure they have an opportunity to contest the allegations as well as a chance to make things right." Trump's disregard for the law is coupled with angry dismay at judicial review. As he sees it, any judge who dares to impede his will is a "Radical Left Lunatic," a "troublemaker" and "agitator" who "should be IMPEACHED!!!" After the tariff ruling, a White House spokesman argued that the court charged with interpreting and applying trade laws had no business doing that. "It is not for unelected judges to decide how to properly address a national emergency," he insisted. Contrary to that take, "it is emphatically the province and duty" of the judicial branch to "say what the law is," as Chief Justice John Marshall put it 222 years ago. Especially when the executive branch is headed by someone who does not seem to care. © Copyright 2025 by Creators Syndicate Inc. The post Trump's Haste Begets Lawlessness appeared first on
