Ryan Reynolds promises to ‘get down in the mud' in new nature documentary

The Canada-born actor, 48, who co-owns Welsh football club Wrexham, will narrate the tongue-in-cheek show Underdogs for National Geographic.
In the five-part series, Reynolds will speak about the outcasts of the animal kingdom, while wildlife footage shows the unconventional hygiene choices and unsavoury courtship rituals of some of the world's strangest animals.
The trailer, released on Tuesday, features Green Day's new song Underdog written for the show.
In the teaser, Reynolds says: 'For over 135 years, National Geographic has gone to the ends of the Earth, to bring you the most stunning footage of nature ever put to film.
'But enough with the top of the food chain, it's time to shift our focus to the bottom.'
He adds that he is going past 'nature's glory hogs', while footage of typical animals that appear in wildlife documentaries is shown, to 'get down in the mud, with nature's bench-warmers, not the superheroes, the superzeroes'.
The show promises to show a cave in New Zealand, which glows thanks to millions of mucus-coated grubs, as well as a goose which lays its eggs on the top of a cliff and a koala that feeds its baby poo.
It will also feature music from British composer Harry Gregson-Williams, who has written accompaniments for the Chronicles Of Narnia films, the Shrek franchise, and Gladiator II.
Underdogs will start airing next month (National Geographic/PA)
The actor also said: 'Getting to work with National Geographic on Underdogs was a dream come true – mostly because I can finally watch a project of ours with my children.
'Technically, they saw 'Deadpool & Wolverine' but I don't think they absorbed much while covering their eyes and ears and screaming for two hours.
'We're so proud to elevate the unsung heroes of the natural world to the top of the entertainment food chain and can't wait for everyone to see.'
Reynolds is an executive producer on the series through his company Maximum Effort, which has worked on the Deadpool films, and the FX football docu-series Welcome To Wrexham – which has run for four series and earned eight Emmys.
The Hollywood star also released one of the biggest blockbusters of 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine, which saw the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and their characters become integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Underdogs starts airing from Wednesday June 18 at 9pm on National Geographic Wild UK, and will then come to Disney+ soon.

Plans launched for Scottish 'women only western'

A female-led project from Scotland has launched an ambitious plan to create the first wild west film funded entirely by women. 'Spaghetti Western' is the latest initiative from Wigtown-based and US-born writer and director Jessica Fox, who hopes it will help open the door for more female influence over the movie industry. She, and London-based producer Diana Phillips, believe it's essential to have more films created from the female gaze and with female financing. Spaghetti Western is set in 1881 when Elena Fardella, a young Sicilian widow, finds herself thrust into the battle for control of the remote, dust-blown town of Eden, New Mexico. Her only weapon is her skill as a cook and determination to use food to bring people together. The team are hoping to make the first female-funded western (Image: Colin Hattersley) Fox, known for her award-winning movie Stella and her romantic memoir Three Things You Need To Know About Rockets has put together a vibrant international creative team, including the Grammy award and Pulitzer Prize-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens. Development funding is in place, thanks to female angel investors, and the team is calling on other women to seize the chance to be part of a project aiming to change the movie-making landscape. Fox said: 'It's a fun, authentic, deliciously different take on the Wild West – how it was really won, as gun toting bad guys face the ultimate showdown when Sicilian cookery comes to town. 'But the project is far bigger, it's about empowering women of the 21st century to start transforming the movie industry, by getting involved as investors, directors and producers. 'It's a sector that's overwhelmingly dominated by men. Men decide who and what to fund, the film and TV that we watch and our cultural narratives. Even the films with female central characters are largely made through the male gaze. 'It's time that changed, with fresh stories and ideas that bring new perspectives to the big screen – and with that, new audiences. 'The only way that's going to happen is if we begin making movies that are funded by women and offer the insights and experience they need to truly take the leading role. 'She who holds the purse strings tells the story.' Phillips said: 'We have a brilliant script, a great creative team, the music has been recorded and development funding is in place – now we are looking for women to come forward as investors and collaborators so we can make a great movie and a real difference to the movie industry.' Among the women who have come together to provide development funding for Spaghetti Western is Professor Lynne Cadenhead, chair of Women's Enterprise Scotland and chief operating officer of TRICAPITAL Angels Ltd. She said: 'Funding remains one of the biggest barriers to getting women's stories on screen. The truth is, whoever controls the purse strings tells the story — and it's time for that to change. Spaghetti Western offers a groundbreaking model for women to back each other creatively, take control of the storytelling, and build a legacy that lasts.'

Groveling Justin Bieber puts on VERY racy display with wife Hailey Bieber after billion dollar Rhode sale

Justin Bieber celebrated his wife Hailey Bieber selling her Rhode Skin company to e.l.f. Beauty for $1 billion by sharing a racy snap of them together on Instagram. Just weeks after landing in hot water over the bizarre way he congratulated her on landing the cover of Vogue, the pop star, 31, made sure to mark the milestone in a much sweeter way. The Canadian singer-songwriter looked over the moon as he planted a sweet kiss on her cheek and squeezed her chest. In the image, Hailey beamed with joy as she looked directly in the camera and laid back in her man's arms. His post came amid the exciting news that Hailey sold her beauty brand, just three years after launching it. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. e.l.f. Chairman and CEO Tarang Amin confirmed the news on Wednesday in a statement to Business Wire. 'E.l.f. Beauty found a like-minded disruptor in rhode,' Amin told the publication. 'Rhode further diversifies our portfolio with a fast-growing brand that makes the best of prestige accessible.' 'We are excited by Rhode's ability to break beauty barriers, fully aligning with e.l.f. Beauty's vision to create a different kind of company. Rhode is a beautiful brand that we believe is ready for rocketship growth.' Hailey will still serve as founder of the brand and Chief Creative Officer and Head of Innovation, according to Business Wire. Following the news, Hailey took to Instagram to break her silence on the monumental deal. 'When I launched @rhode in 2022, I always had big dreams for the company, and the most important thing to me is to keep bringing rhode to more spaces, places, and faces globally,' she wrote in the caption, which was accompanied by two pictures of her. 'So today I am so incredibly excited and proud to announce that we are partnering with e.l.f. Beauty as we step into this next chapter in the world of rhode. 'I found a like-minded disruptor with a vision to be a different kind of company that believes in big ideas and innovation in the same way that I do and will help us continue to grow the brand,' her message continued. 'I feel invigorated, excited and more ready than ever to step into an even bigger role as Chief Creative Officer, and Head of Innovation of rhode as well as strategic advisor to e.l.f. Beauty.' In the post, Hailey also thanked her dedicated team at rhode and acknowledged that she 'couldn't have done it' without their help. Of course, she also thanked consumers. 'As I've said, this is only the beginning,' Hailey signed off. Justin was quick to reshare the post. He noticeably did not add a caption of his own after sparking backlash with his comments about her recent Vogue cover. E.l.f. cosmetics is currently sold at a variety of stores, like Ulta and Walmart . They offer all different kinds of makeup products at relatively low price points, with mega stars like Jennifer Coolidge working as a spokesperson over the past year. Over the past 12 months, rhode has generated $212 in net sales, according to Fortune. News of the deal comes just one month after the star hired both J.P. Morgan and global investment bank Moelis to assist her in finding potential deal options at $1 billion in value, sources told WWD. However, some sources doubted that a deal would go through, comparing it to other solo celeb-faced beauty brands like Makeup by Mario and Selena Gomez's Rare Beauty. This Fall, Rhode will also be carried in beauty giant Sephora. It will be coming to all locations in the US, Canada and the UK. Bieber's success comes off the back of her Vogue cover this month - which was seemingly ruined by her husband, who revealed that he had once cruelly told his wife during an argument. 'Yo this reminds me when Hailey and I got into a huge fight, I told hails that she would never be on the cover of vogue, Yikes I know, so mean, For some reason because I felt so disrespected I thought I gotta get even,' he explained. Justin continued: 'think as we mature we realize that we're not helping anything by getting even, we're honestly just prolonging what we really want which is intimacy and connection.' He concluded his post by writing a message directly to Hailey, which read: 'So baby u already know but forgive me for saying u wouldn't get a vogue cover cuz clearly i was sadly mistaken.' Many saw his caption as a backhanded compliment and something 'so unnecessary' to share with his more than 294 million Instagram followers. While his caption was meant to be humorous, with Justin quipping he was 'clearly mistaken,' many of his followers failed to see the funny side, and the comments section was flooded with criticism. Following the backlash, Justin appeared to delete the caption from his post, replacing it with a shrugging emoji.

Historic Tredegar House to Host Eisteddfod yr Urdd Casnewydd 2027

The Urdd is excited to announce that the location of Eisteddfod yr Urdd 2027 will be Tredegar House in Newport. The ancient 17th Century house was home to the Morgan family, later the Tredegar family who were one of the most powerful and influential families in the area. The mansion sits on stunning 90-acre green grounds, making it a 'perfect site' for the Eisteddfod. Llio Maddocks, the Urdd's Arts and Eisteddfod Director: 'I am so pleased to see Newport City Council and the whole of Gwent community's support to hosting the Eisteddfod in 2027. Tredegar House looks like the perfect site for us organisers. One of the most important elements of Eisteddfod yr Urdd is the fact that it's a travelling festival and therefore visit areas that have never hosted the festival before. I very much look forward to working with the Council and local community over the next two years to provide valuable experiences for children and young people of the area.' 'We are delighted that Tredegar House has been confirmed as the venue for Eisteddfod yr Urdd's first ever visit to Newport in 2027', said Councillor Emma Corten, Newport City Council's cabinet member for culture and communications. 'Hosting more major events and increasing the use of Welsh in our cultural offer are both parts of our long-term cultural strategy for the city. Eisteddfod yr Urdd, one of Wales's largest cultural events, will help us as we work to deliver on both of those goals. 'We're keen to involve as many businesses and community groups, both in the city centre and across Newport, as possible in the celebrations, so that as many people as possible experience the buzz of a major cultural event. We cannot wait for our city to play host to visitors from across Wales and beyond in two years' time.' Lizzie Smith Jones, National Trust Cymru General Manager for Tredegar House said: 'We're incredibly proud to be welcoming Eisteddfod yr Urdd to Tredegar House and parkland in 2027. It's a huge moment for Newport and our community – we're looking forward to playing our part in the celebrations of Welsh language, culture and creativity, and championing Wales' future generations.'
