Historic Tredegar House to Host Eisteddfod yr Urdd Casnewydd 2027
The Urdd is excited to announce that the location of Eisteddfod yr Urdd 2027 will be Tredegar House in Newport.
The ancient 17th Century house was home to the Morgan family, later the Tredegar family who were one of the most powerful and influential families in the area. The mansion sits on stunning 90-acre green grounds, making it a 'perfect site' for the Eisteddfod.
Llio Maddocks, the Urdd's Arts and Eisteddfod Director:
'I am so pleased to see Newport City Council and the whole of Gwent community's support to hosting the Eisteddfod in 2027. Tredegar House looks like the perfect site for us organisers. One of the most important elements of Eisteddfod yr Urdd is the fact that it's a travelling festival and therefore visit areas that have never hosted the festival before. I very much look forward to working with the Council and local community over the next two years to provide valuable experiences for children and young people of the area.'
'We are delighted that Tredegar House has been confirmed as the venue for Eisteddfod yr Urdd's first ever visit to Newport in 2027', said Councillor Emma Corten, Newport City Council's cabinet member for culture and communications.
'Hosting more major events and increasing the use of Welsh in our cultural offer are both parts of our long-term cultural strategy for the city. Eisteddfod yr Urdd, one of Wales's largest cultural events, will help us as we work to deliver on both of those goals.
'We're keen to involve as many businesses and community groups, both in the city centre and across Newport, as possible in the celebrations, so that as many people as possible experience the buzz of a major cultural event. We cannot wait for our city to play host to visitors from across Wales and beyond in two years' time.'

The Hollywood duo have been lauded for their impact on Wrexham's fortunes, with their ambitions now set on reaching the Premier League. However, ex-Everton midfielder Donovan has questioned the narrative of the team's ascent depicted in the Welcome to Wrexham documentary. Appearing on the Unfiltered Soccer podcast, which he presents alongside US legend Tim Howard, Donovan suggested that the owners' success was largely due to significant financial investment. He also put Reynolds and McElhenney on the spot about whether they're prepared to dig deeper into their pockets to help Wrexham's push for the top flight. "If you watch the show, you think it's some miracle, but it's not a miracle," Donovan said. "It's an amazing story, but they have also spent at the top of every one of the leagues they've been in. "The question now is whether they can do it in the Championship. My first thought was no, but I did see a report last week that they were willing to offer a player £50,000 a week. "They clearly have the money to do it, but are they going to take the risk? It's a big risk now, and you could lose £30m or £40m and not get promoted. It's going to be interesting to watch." However, Howard was more upbeat about Wrexham's chances of making the challenging leap to the top. Despite acknowledging the substantial investment in the team, the ex-Manchester United goalkeeper highlighted that splashing out money doesn't always equate to success. Howard said: "They say the hardest jump in all of the promotions is from the Championship to the Premier League, because there is just more money in that league. "Money makes the world go round when it comes to football or sports, and they [Wrexham] are pumping a tonne of money into that team. They're just better and if they continue to do that, I think they could possibly do it [be promoted]. "It's mind-blowing if you think about it because this could have easily gone the other way. It could have easily gone really bad because they spent a tonne of money on the wrong players and didn't get this success." He added: "The Premier League is filled with all sorts of crazy stories and I hope they are able to do it." Here in Cardiff, we are totally spoilt for great ways to spend a night out. From great activity bars like Golf Fang and Flight Club, to traditional pubs like The Cottage and places to bust your dance moves like Bonnie Rouge and Barbara's Bier Bar. And now, there is a new bar on the scene. The Piano Works opens on St Mary Street on Friday, May 30. The venue will have crowd-led setlists and high-energy performances from a live band and duelling pianos. Piano Works will offer "something different" to Cardiff's nightlife with a mix of live music, audience-requested songs, and a late-night DJ. The venue will focus on creating an interactive, high-energy atmosphere that keeps the music going into the early hours. It also serves food and has a special Sunday 'roasts and rhythm' menu where you can dine on roast beef and bloody Marys while two duelling pianos duke it out on the main stage. Owned by the Nightcap Group, who also own Blame Gloria, The Cocktail Club, and Tonight Josephine, The Piano Works takes over the former location of Dirty Martini, which is also owned by the Nightcap Group. The Nightcap group is run by former Dragons' Den dragon, Sarah Willingham. She was on the show from 2015 to 2016. Speaking about opening The Piano Works in Cardiff, Sarah said: "We love Cardiff... we've really invested in it, it is beautifully done. "That street in Cardiff is just a great street and the people of Wales love to go out they love a good sing song and we feel really confident that this is bringing a concept that the Welsh are going to love... we know the Welsh love a sing-song, love a good drink and love some great food and we are bringing all three in one venue." Bringing a fresh twist to the city's music scene, The Piano Works promises a non-stop, singalong experience where the audience decides the playlist. Every night, guests can scribble down their favourite songs and hand them over to the live band. There will be no setlists, just back-to-back audience requests played by a talented roster of musicians and vocalists. Once the live music wraps up, late-night DJs will take over to keep the energy high into the early hours. Inside the dark bar there is plenty space to sit, with tables with benches, an illuminated stage, a photobooth and a very well stacked bar that runs the length of the wall. Pride of the venue is the elaborate stage which has two pianos, a drumkit and other instruments. You will also be joined by Welsh icons Sir Tom Jones and Dame Shirley Bassey who are illuminated and lit up on the walls. There are other Welsh nods with neon signs that read The Cwtch and 'oh, what's occurring?' In another part of the venue, near the windows, it is lighter and there is another bar with comfy high stool seating available. Outside follows a red theme, with font and text used like old style Hollywood and geometric patterns, and there is some seating right on St Mary street, so you never miss out on the hustle and bustle. Documentary on writer Irvine Welsh to close Edinburgh film festival
An intimate documentary focusing on Trainspotting writer Irvine Welsh will close the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Reality Is Not Enough will follow the best-selling author at a 'crossroads' in life where he is 'acutely aware of his mortality and accepting that his hedonistic days are drawing to a close.' It is also said to explore the 'inner and outer life' of the writer, who was propelled to fame with his debut novel focusing on heroin addicts in Leith in 1993. From director Paul Sng, the documentary, which was previously titled I Am Irvine Welsh, has been described as a 'captivating piece of autobiographical filmmaking.' Liam Neeson, Stephen Graham, Maxine Peake, and singer Nick Cave are all expected to read from Welsh's novels throughout the film. The official synopsis states: 'Reality Is Not Enough reveals the inner and outer lives of Irvine Welsh, one of the most original and controversial writers of our times. 'For four decades across novels, screenplays and an outspoken presence in media, the Trainspotting author has both celebrated and defined contemporary society and culture, whilst simultaneously exposing its flaws. 'In this intimate and personal documentary we meet Welsh at a crossroads, acutely aware of his mortality and accepting that his hedonistic days are drawing to a close. 'Reality Is Not Enough is an illuminating documentary offering a rare glimpse into the mind of a prolific artist at work and play. 'By exploring the books, films and shows cherished by readers and audiences across the world, it weaves a rich tapestry out of both contemporary and archive footage, conversations, music, novel readings, personal reminiscence, and his own wickedly funny musings on life. 'The film explores profound questions about what it means to be an artist drawing inspiration from the darkness within oneself, and how possible it is to leave that life on the page.' Film festival director Paul Ridd, who is overseeing his second programme, said: 'We were so impressed by this brilliantly immersive and fascinating documentary about iconic Scottish writer Irvine Welsh. 'Paul Sng's refreshingly unusual and highly cinematic approach perfectly fits his subject, a man who has spent an entire career refusing to be pinned down, always surprising us with works of profound impact, rawness and grace. 'We could not think of a better way to round off our festival than with this terrific film' Sng, who made the documentary with Leith-based LS Productions, said: 'When I read Trainspotting as a teenager in London back in the nineties, I had no idea I would one day live in the city where the book is set, let alone make a film with its author. 'Having our world premiere in our home city is a huge honour and we're looking forward immensely to sharing the film with the EIFF audience.' The documentary will premier in the Scottish Capital on August 20, weeks after Welsh launches his new Trainspotting sequel book. Men in Love will follow the iconic characters of Renton, Sick Boy, Spud, and Begbie as they attempt to leave heroin behind in search of sex and romance.
