Report: Bayern Munich's Max Eberl recently held meeting with agents for Athletic Club star Nico Williams
The mini transfer window for club's playing in this summer's FIFA Club World Cup is now officially closed, but the transfer rumor mill for Bayern Munich has been heating up. Florian Wirtz has all but completed his move from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool and Leroy Sané has agreed to join Galatasaray and will not be joining Bayern in the United States for the Club World Cup.
The door is wide open for Bayern to sign a replacement winger and there is added impetus to strike a deal as soon as possible now that Sané is out the door and Wirtz's move to Merseyside is sealed. Athletic Club's Nico Williams has emerged as the club's top transfer target in recent weeks, as the Spanish winger has a release clause of 60 million euros that Athletic Club is now desperately trying to increase in attempts to get him to agree to a contract extension. The advances from Bayern might be too much to turn down, though, for both the player and the club.

Per new information from Sport Bild's Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl held a meeting in Munich with Nico Williams' agents to discuss a potential summer transfer. To add to that, the Spanish winger is now Eberl's top transfer priority of the summer, as it has emerged this week that Milan's Rafa Leão is more than likely off the table for Bayern.
Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze, Brighton & Hove Albion's Kaoru Mitoma, Chelsea's Christopher Nkunku, RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons, and Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola have all also been linked with Bayern, but Williams remain the hottest target at this juncture. Williams himself has also signalled that he could very well envision a move to Bayern and that he has essentially narrowed his choices down to three options.
The winger either wants to stay with Athletic, go to Bayern, or go to Arsenal. All three options are potentially in the cards for the Spain international that Eberl and Christoph Freund are eager to try to sign for the German Rekordmeister. Athletic Club will likely try to hold more discussions with the player now that the international break is over, but Eberl and Freund will certainly be working equally as hard to try to get a deal to materialize.

No, Viktor Hovland Does Not Have a Wife at US Open- Here's What We Know originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If Viktor Hovland has a girlfriend, the PGA Tour golfer has gone to great lengths to keep his relationship a mystery ahead of the U.S. Open. There has been plenty of speculation about Hovland's dating life. Advertisement Some outlets have linked Hovland to Norwegian influencer Kristin Sorsdal, but this does not appear to be anything more than an unfounded internet rumor. Hovland's Instagram page is absent of posts about a significant other. Instead, the athlete's social feed is all about golf with a few posts about his sponsors as well. Fans have not witnessed Hovland celebrate any of his seven PGA Tour wins with a wife or girlfriend, a popular tradition for many golfers. Likewise, Hovland has also not been spotted with a love interest during previous Ryder Cups, a popular event for golfers to bring their families along for the festivities. Viktor Hovland looks on during the second round of the U.S. Open golf LeClaire-Imagn Images Back in 2024, Hovland admitted that he is challenging to date. Advertisement 'I'm probably a tough person to truly get to know," Hovland said at the time, per Essentially Sports. 'It takes time to spend with me, and I haven't given enough to do that.' As a public figure, dating may pose its challenges for Hovland but on the course the golfer appears to have regained his form. Hovland is among the top contenders heading into the final rounds of the U.S. Open. Going into the third round, Hovland sounded surprised that he is near the top of the U.S. Open leaderboard. Hovland is one of just three golfers who is under par after the first two rounds at Oakmont. "I mean, (expectations) weren't overly high, to be honest with you, but I know that I can do something like this if I find a feel and make a few putts and stuff," Hovland told reporters on Friday. "I can go around here and play some good golf. Advertisement "But it wasn't like I was feeling overly confident. But that's kind of how this year has been." Related: J.J. Exclusive: Liverpool Have Scheduled Talks Today with Bayer Leverkusen to Finalise Florian Wirtz Move
Florian Wirtz to Liverpool: A Bold Move Shaping the Reds' New Era In what could become the most seismic transfer of the summer—and the biggest in German football history—Liverpool appear to be closing in on the stunning signing of Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz. Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, has shed new light on the Reds' pursuit of the Bundesliga sensation, with detailed insights on how the deal is unfolding behind the scenes. Advertisement This is a move packed with significance. More than just a statement of intent, it marks a new era under Arne Slot, fresh from winning the Premier League in his debut season at Anfield. With Michael Edwards back in the football operations hot seat, it's clear Liverpool are not only rebuilding but redefining their ambitions. Wirtz Chooses Anfield Over Allianz According to Tavolieri, Florian Wirtz made a decisive move by 'calling Bayern Munich and Vincent Kompany to thank them for their interest', indicating his clear preference for Liverpool. That single call underlines the magnetic pull Anfield has regained under its new structure and leadership. With Manchester City once thought to be the frontrunners, this is a dramatic twist. Advertisement 'It was Wirtz who took the decision to go away and want to win something,' Tavolieri said, pointing out that the player, not the clubs, shifted the direction of the deal. Despite Manchester City's strong position and advanced talks, Wirtz reportedly 'hesitated on that', a hesitation that now seems to have opened the door for Liverpool. This willingness to shun Germany's dominant power and England's treble winners is a major coup, not just for Liverpool but for the Premier League narrative as a whole. Edwards Returns with a Masterstroke Key to this developing saga is the figure of Michael Edwards, the architect of Liverpool's previous golden era. Tavolieri explained that 'Edwards put in so much work to convince FSG on the deal in terms of media, image and symbol.' That phrase—media, image and symbol—says it all. Advertisement Wirtz is more than just a gifted midfielder. He is an emblem of the next generation of footballing icons. Signing him signals a long-term strategy, blending technical brilliance with commercial magnetism. Edwards is already believed to be 'speaking and looking to plan instalments on the deal', reflecting a structured financial approach. That's typical of Liverpool's modern strategy: bold, but calculated. Photo: IMAGO Leverkusen Happy to Sell—But Not to Rivals Tavolieri's report also revealed why Liverpool may have gained an advantage: 'Leverkusen never wanted to sell him to a rival, so they are very happy to make this call with Liverpool.' In this context, a move to Bayern was never straightforward. City had their salary cap limitations. But Liverpool offered something different—an exciting new project, led by a title-winning manager and backed by data-driven football minds. Advertisement Tavolieri added: 'It has never been straightforward. It's important to understand that Leverkusen were so far with Man City. There were no doubts that they would win the race.' And yet, here we are, on the brink of one of the most unexpected and exciting signings in modern football. 'When Wirtz went to Man City, Pep Guardiola wasn't there. When he went to Liverpool, Arne Slot was there and they convinced him. It was strange to them.' 'From now it will be much more smooth because they were already talking about Wirtz whilst finalising the Jeremie Frimpong deal.' What Wirtz Brings to the Reds Still only 21, Florian Wirtz is regarded as one of the most intelligent, versatile, and creative players in Europe. His vision, press resistance, and ability to link midfield and attack suit Liverpool's dynamic style perfectly. Advertisement In a team already boasting elite talents like Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Trent Alexander-Arnold stepping into midfield roles, Wirtz would not just complement but elevate the tactical possibilities under Slot. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis Let's be honest—if this deal happens, it is monumental. Florian Wirtz isn't just a big name, he's one of the most exciting players in world football. We're not talking about raw potential, we're talking about a player who has dominated the Bundesliga and looked every bit the heir to Germany's creative legacy. From a fan's perspective, what a time to be a Red. First season under Arne Slot? Premier League title. And now potentially signing one of Europe's most electrifying talents? This is more than just a rebuild—it's a revolution. Advertisement Michael Edwards returning was the first sign that FSG were willing to do things differently. But getting Wirtz, ahead of Bayern and City, would be proof that Liverpool are now the top table's kingmakers again. It's symbolic, it's strategic, and it's sensational. Credit to Sacha Tavolieri for breaking the story and to Anfield Index for giving fans insight into the finer details. If Wirtz steps onto the Anfield turf this summer, the message is clear: Liverpool are back, and they mean business.

Matthias Schmid, Ben Griffin set pace at third round of Charles Schwab Challenge
Scottie Scheffler is tied for seventh after shooting a 6-under-par 64 in the third round of the Charles Schwab Challenge golf tournament on Saturday. After starting Saturday sharing the lead, Ben Griffin and Matthias Schmid continued their control of the leaderboard at the Charles Schwab Challenge with the pair nursing a 4-stroke lead headed into Sunday's final round. Schmid, a German native and PGA Tour rookie, started his day with three straight birdies, showcasing his putting prowess. Advertisement 'Obviously I got off to a really good start, and after three holes I hung onto that pretty good, I would say,' Said Schmid, 'I needed to scramble a little bit today. Didn't hit too many fairways. I mean, it was tough. I feel like a lot of tee shots were with hard left-to-right wind. I hit in a fade, so it's kind of tricky to hit these fairways then because they're so firm, but hung on there pretty good.' Griffin got off to a similarly hot start, also starting off with three consecutive birdies, but struggled on his next two holes with a double bogey and bogey. Griffin, though, use birdies on holes eight and 10 to draw even with Schmid. The rest of the top ten is listed below: 1. Matti Schmid, Ben Griffin (-13) Advertisement 3. Rickie Fowler (-9) 4. Nick Hardy, Robert MacIntyre, Akshay Bhatia, (-8) 7. Scottie Scheffler, Andrew Novak, Kurt Kitayama, (-7) 10. John Pak, Ryo Hisatsune, Tommy Fleetwood, Emiliano Grillo, J.J. Spaun, Lucas Glover, Karl Vilips, Bud Cauley (-6) Scheffler's charge The Highland Park graduate shot up the leaderboard on Saturday, posting a 6-under par with seven birdies and an eagle, launching Scottie Schefler back into the top ten. His second shot on the seventh hole was one of the day's best while stuck in the rough and surrounded by trees, allowing him to salvage a par. 'It was kind of an interesting one because the lie at first looked bad, and the more we got in there and looked at it, the kind of more options that came about,' said Scheffler, 'Originally when you get up to a lie like that, I think the first thought in your head is the safest place is to try to get it back out in the fairway, but the areas where I was going to chip it out seemed like a pretty hard shot. It looked like I had something through the trees. The penalty for not pulling it off wasn't too bad. So just figured I would try something.'
