MNS Activists Blacken Face OfNIT Officer Over Alleged Graft
2
Nagpur:
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena
(MNS) activists on Thursday blackened the face of assistant engineer with Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), Suresh Chavan, at the trust's East Division office over his alleged involvement in corruption.
While the NIT claimed that the ink attack was due to personal enmity, MNS office-bearers maintained it was the result of negligence by NIT's senior officials, despite multiple complaints against the official in question.
MNS's city unit secretary, Ghanshyam Nikhade, said the party's office-bearers had given multiple complaints against Chavan to senior NIT officials, but they did not take any action and instead protected him.
"Even on July 18, we had submitted a written complaint regarding corruption by Chavan, but the officials neither took any action nor transferred him. Had action been taken by the seniors, the incident could have been avoided," said Nikhade.
He also added that NIT officials are contacting party office-bearers from rural Nagpur who do not have any knowledge about the issue.
A senior NIT official told TOI that the attack was due to personal animosity.

"We have directed the official to file a police complaint as the incident happened on NIT premises. We have also given a complaint in writing to the police," said the official.
MNS claimed that on Sept 13, 2023, under the leadership of Sandeep Deshpande and Raju Umralkar, the party had taken out a protest march to the NIT office and submitted a memorandum to the then chairman, Manojkumar Suryawanshi.
"At the time, Chavan had been serving continuously for 10 years at the NIT's East Division office without transfer.
This prolonged tenure enabled him to carry out several large-scale irregularities. For example, he reportedly collected lakhs of rupees from encroachers of NIT-owned land in Mouza-Chikhali (Dev) by promising them unauthorized land allotments," said MNS.
The MNS also accused Chavan of embezzling govt funds under the guise of development works in Bhandkheda (Central Nagpur) by submitting fake bills for cement road projects that were either not carried out or were actually done by the NMC.
"All these instances of corruption, along with supporting evidence, were submitted to various authorities, including the then chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, and other concerned govt agencies. The chief minister's office acknowledged the memorandum and directed immediate investigation. However, NIT officials dismissed these directives and took no action. On the contrary, with support from certain political figures and senior NIT officials, Chavan allegedly got himself re-appointed to the East Division to resume his corrupt activities after being briefly transferred to West Division office," the MNS alleged in a press note.

Jane Street under I-T scanner in India; probe hits roadblock over non-cooperation
The Income Tax Department 's ongoing verification proceedings against US proprietary trading firm Jane Street have hit a hurdle, with the company allegedly refusing to cooperate with investigators, officials familiar with the matter said. The tax department had sought access to data and servers used by Jane Street, but the firm refused to cooperate claiming that the servers were located outside India, these officials told ET. The books of accounts are also maintained outside India, despite legal requirements under Indian company law to maintain them domestically," said a senior tax official, requesting anonymity. "The company has only skeleton staff in India, and they too have not been cooperating," the official added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Georgetown: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo Jane Street did not respond to an email seeking comment till press time Friday. Given the lack of cooperation, the department on Thursday carried out a survey action at the Mumbai offices of Nuvama Wealth Management , which is Jane Street's on-ground trading partner in India. "Certain documents and electronic evidence have been seized and are being examined," a senior official said. Live Events In a filing with stock exchanges, Nuvama confirmed the department's survey and said it is "extending full co-operation with the authorities". The income tax department is also examining possible violations of the General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR) and permanent establishment regulations by the company. Under GAAR, the tax department can disregard any arrangement lacking "commercial substance" or structured primarily to avoid tax. It is also probing whether the firm has created a fixed place of business in India, which gives rise to tax liabilities. This development comes in the wake of the regulatory scrutiny of the company's operations in India. The Securities and Exchange Board of India on July 3 barred Jane Street from accessing capital markets, alleging that it made illegal gains of Rs 4,843.5 crore by manipulating trades in Bank Nifty and Nifty Index Options. The regulator also directed it to deposit the gains into an interest-bearing escrow account. Sebi lifted the trading ban on July 21 after Jane Street deposited Rs 4,840 crore in an escrow account while clarifying that this action would not affect or limit its legal rights or remedies. The regulator allowed the firm to resume trading, but under close monitoring. According to Sebi, its investigation found that while Jane Street's Indian entity executed intraday trades in the cash segment, its offshore arms-particularly in Singapore and Hong Kong-booked large profits through index options. Jane Street has denied allegations of market manipulation.

Trade war: 'India's ties with US have weathered many transitions,' says MEA
NEW DELHI: Even as the India-US relationship comes under strain because of President Donald Trump's trade weaponisation, the Indian govt reposed hope in bilateral ties, with the ministry of external affairs (MEA) saying on Friday that the partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges, and that India is confident the relationship will continue to move forward. "This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges. We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward," MEA spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said. At the same time, the govt underlined the significance of the relationship with Russia calling it steady and time-tested. MEA: India and Russia have time-tested ties Trump announced 25% tariffs on imports from India this week and also threatened to impose a penalty for India's oil and defence procurement from Russia. On crude imports from Russia, govt reiterated India's position that it's guided by what is on offer in the markets, and by the prevailing global circumstances, in securing its energy needs. On defence procurements, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said sourcing of India's defence requirements is determined solely by its national security imperatives and strategic assessments. Despite repeated provocations by Trump, India has so far avoided getting into a slanging match with Americans, focusing instead on ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade deal that it hopes will alleviate some of the President's concerns about US' lopsided trade with India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stylish New Mobility Scooters Available for Seniors (Prices May Surprise You) Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Search Now Undo Asked about Trump tariffs and its implications for the relationship, the official said India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values and robust people-to-people ties. On defence cooperation, Jaiswal said India has a strong defence partnership with the US that has been strengthening over the past several years. There is potential for this partnership to grow further under the India-US COMPACT for the 21st century. In Feb this year, Trump and PM Modi launched a new initiative — the 'US-India COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century' — to drive 'transformative change' across key pillars of cooperation. Asked about ties with Russia, the official said India's bilateral relationships with various countries stand on their own merit and should not be seen from the prism of a third country. 'India and Russia have a steady and time-tested partnership,' added the official. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
