Trump Hints At 100% Tariffs On Imported Semiconductors, Exempts US Manufacturers
The move is intended to pressure global tech firms to establish or expand their manufacturing facilities within the US. US President Donald Trump has suggested that his administration may impose a 100% tariff on all imported semiconductors and chips, signalling a major shift in trade policy aimed at bolstering domestic manufacturing. Speaking to reporters during a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook in the Oval Office, Trump announced the potential tariffs. 'So 100% tariff on all chips and semiconductors coming into the US. But if you've made a commitment to build (in the US), or if you're in the process of building (in the US), as many are, there is no tariff," the President said. The move is intended to pressure global tech firms to establish or expand their manufacturing facilities within the US, reducing reliance on foreign supply chains. Trump noted that companies like Apple would benefit from the exemption, given their increasing focus on domestic production. 'But the good news for companies like Apple is if you're building in the US or have committed to build, without question, committed to build in the US, there will be no charge," Trump added. As of now, there has been no official timeline or policy document released regarding the implementation of the proposed tariff. White House officials have yet to clarify the scope or mechanisms for enforcement. If implemented, the policy could have wide-ranging effects on industries that rely heavily on semiconductors, such as consumer electronics, automotive manufacturing, artificial intelligence systems, and health technology. The tariff could prompt multinational companies to reevaluate their supply chains and possibly invest in domestic production to avoid the additional costs. Meanwhile, Apple has announced plans to invest $100 million in US manufacturing. The move comes amid growing pressure from the Trump administration to shift iPhone and other product assembly operations from overseas facilities to the US. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Trump Could Meet Putin In-Person Next Week Amid Ceasefire Push: Reports
The development follows a recent meeting between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin. US President Donald Trump is open to meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin for direct talks regarding a possible ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, according to a White House official cited by the Associated Press on Wednesday. The in-person meeting could take place as early as next week and is expected to focus on identifying potential pathways toward ending the conflict. The development follows a recent meeting between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin, during which they reportedly discussed the White House's proposed deadline for Russia to reach a peace deal with Ukraine. President Trump has previously warned of imposing penalties and sanctions on Russia should it fail to agree to a ceasefire. If the meeting goes ahead, it would mark Trump's first official meeting with Putin since he began his second term as US President. Meanwhile, Trump has already met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on multiple occasions, including a controversial meeting in February this year involving White House officials and the Ukrainian leader. While the meeting with Putin is not yet confirmed, and the location remains undecided, the White House official emphasised that President Trump is open to sitting down with both Putin and Zelenskyy. The New York Times was the first to report on the possibility of a summit, just hours after Witkoff's visit to Moscow. Earlier in the day, Trump described the meeting between Witkoff and Putin as 'highly productive," adding that 'great progress was made." Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, also described the meeting with Witkoff as a 'useful and constructive conversation." He said the discussions focused on resolving the Ukrainian crisis and improving overall relations between Washington and Moscow. In recent days, Trump has engaged in a political standoff on social media with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev over the ceasefire timeline. Trump has suggested repositioning US nuclear submarines near Russia and warned of 'very severe" tariffs if Moscow fails to reach a deal with Kyiv. Initially setting a 50-day deadline, Trump later shortened it to just 10 days as of July 29.
