Man City 'consider' Liverpool title winner as Pep Guardiola plots huge change
Former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders is in the running to become part of Pep Guardiola's new-look coaching staff. Manchester City announced on Wednesday that two members of Guardiola's backroom team had left the club following their below-par season.
City failed to win a trophy for the first time since Guardiola's first campaign in 2016-17. It resulted in the exits of Juanma Lillo and Inigo Dominguez, whose contracts will expire next month.
In addition, Carlos Vicens has left the Etihad to become the new manager of Portuguese side Braga. Guardiola is now seeking to refresh his coaching staff and Lijnders has emerged as a candidate.
The Times report that the Dutchman is being considered, having left Liverpool at the same time as Jurgen Klopp 12 months ago. Lijnders was soon appointed Red Bull Salzburg manager but was sacked in December after a disastrous start to the season.
He'd only been a first-team manager once before, taking charge of Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen for a short time either side of his two spells at Liverpool. Klopp's ex-No.2 helped the Reds become European champions in 2019 before finally ending their 30-year wait for a Premier League title in 2020.
City are also considering promoting Kolo Toure to a first-team coaching position. The former defender returned to the Etihad last season as assistant under-18 coach and has impressed academy staff.
Toure, 44, played for City for four years before working under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic and Leicester. The Ivorian then had a brief spell at Wigan Athletic in League One.
City won't rush into a decision and have already decided who'll assist Guardiola during the Club World Cup in the USA next month. The club's under-21 manager, Ben Wilkinson, and his assistant, Craig Mudd, will step up for the tournament.

Before Feyenoord boss Arne Slot was chosen as Klopp's successor, Lijdners was a candidate to get the Liverpool gig. The 42-year-old revealed ahead of his exit that Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon had personally called him to reveal that he was indeed 'really considered'.
Lijnders told the Athletic: "Mike said, 'Pep, we really considered you, but I think it's fair for you that we don't put you after Jurgen'. Mike is a good guy. He knew as well. I'd made my ambition clear. It was best for the future."

Liverpool 'considering former star to replace John Heitinga as Arne Slot's assistant at Anfield'
A former Liverpool star could be set to come in to take the role of Arne Slot 's assistant manager after it was confirmed that John Heitinga is leaving to take over as boss of Ajax. The former Everton defender arrived at Anfield last summer and has served as Slot's No 2 throughout their Premier League-winning campaign. However, Heitinga will have no involvement for the Reds in the 2025-26 campaign after coming to an agreement to take charge of Ajax. The 41-year-old will now return to Amsterdam for the fourth time, having enjoyed two spells at the club as a player and a brief stint in charge of the senior side in 2023. Heitinga has agreed a two-year contract and replaces Francesco Farioli, who departed the club after a single season in charge. And Liverpool have already started considering replacements with an ex-player high on their list, according to the Liverpool Echo. That player is Dirk Kuyt, who made 285 appearances for the Reds between 2006 and 2012. He is expected to leave his job as Beerschot manager following their relegation from the Belgian Juliper Pro League. Kuyt took charge of the Belgian outfit in 2023 and clinched promotion to the top flight in his first season. However, he was unable to keep his side up there as they dropped straight back down. Heitinga will be joined in the dugout by fellow Ajax academy graduate Marcel Keizer. 'John is a good coach with enormous drive,' said Ajax technical director Alex Kroes. 'He is ambitious and has further developed himself over the past few years in the Premier League and Champions League. 'John knows the club well and we are convinced that he, together with Marcel, will help improve our players and build on the progress made since last summer.' The most successful club in the history of Dutch football, Ajax have not won an Eredivisie title since Erik ten Hag led the club to victory in 2022.

Ivan Toney's England recall set to propel his status to Saudi Arabia poster boy
England boss Thomas Tuchel gave Ivan Toney a call-up despite joining Saudi side Al Ahli and his decision has given the Middle East league a huge PR lift amid claims players only join them for the money Ivan Toney is set to become a poster boy for the Saudi Pro League. Toney's shock return to the England squad for next week's World Cup qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona and the friendly with Senegal at the City Ground is seen as a landmark moment for the Saudi dream of one day eclipsing the Premier League as the biggest domestic football competition in the world. Cristiano Ronaldo remains the star attraction in the desert - and could now be joined by his Portugal team-mate Bruno Fernandes. But Thomas Tuchel's decision to bring Toney back into the Three Lions pack has given the Arab nation a massive PR lift as they look to clear themselves of the accusation that any player moving to Saudi is motivated by money. It was thought that the 29-year-old striker had sacrificed his international career when he decided to cash in on a three-year contract with Al-Ahli worth a staggering £63million when he left Brentford in a £40million deal last summer. Jordan Henderson was ruthlessly axed from Gareth Southgate 's plans after chasing riches in the desert with Al-Ettifaq - and even a return to Europe with Ajax after just six months later did not prevent the midfielder from missing the cut for last summer's Euros. New Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel has no such concerns. The German recalled Henderson to his first squad - and now Toney is back in the fold after a productive first season in Saudi. Tuchel's first squad, named for the opening qualifiers against Albania and Latvia, included Dan Burn, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Marcus Rashford and Dominic Solanke as well as Henderson. Ollie Watkins has now been added alongside Toney as the England boss looks for alternatives for skipper Harry Kane. Toney scored 28 goals in 42 games in all competitions as Al-Ahli lifted the Asian Champions League and was on target 23 times in 30 league games. He is being touted for a possible return to the Prem, but that now appears unlikely following his return to the England set-up. Toney won the last of his six caps when he came on as a substitute against Spain in the Euro 2024 final - and he will now be looking to add to his solitary international goal after being given the nod by Tuchel. Al-Ahli now want Fernandes to join Toney at the club. Landing the Manchester United captain when manager Ruben Amorim has made it clear that Fernandes is key to his Old Trafford plans would represent another piece of astute business - even if it comes at the cost of a £100million transfer fee and wages of £650,000-a-week.

Juventus 'eye Premier League boss' to be next manager after missing out on Conte
Juventus are considering another managerial change and - after being turned down by Antonio Conte - are looking at Fulham boss Marco Silva as he continues to impress Juventus are ready to go after Fulham boss Marco Silva as they continue their search for a new manager following a rejection from Antonio Conte. The Italian giants are no longer the force they once were and are scouring the market for a new manager. They are open to replacing Igor Tudor - who they hired as Thiago Motta's successor in March. Tudor secured Champions League football, but is not necessarily seen as their long-term fit. Juventus have already been snubbed by former boss Conte and Gian Piero Gasperini, who has just announced he will leave Atalanta after a successful period. As a result their attention has turned to the west London outfit. Since being appointed Silva has led Fulham to the Championship title and then consolidated the Cottagers as a Premier League outfit. He's secured comfortable mid-table finishes as his stock continues to rise. Sky Sports in Italy report that Juventus have had initial contact with Silva's camp and that their incoming general director Damien Comolli is an admirer of the Portuguese boss, who is yet to take charge of an elite European club. Silva's contract expires next summer and he has impressed in a four-year tenure in the capital as he's continually been linked with vacancies elsewhere. However he did claim that he sees himself as Fulham's manager next season. On the final day he said: "I am under contract with the club and of course I've been in planning with the board (for) next season. Everything on track and the plan is there. We have the next two months to prepare for the season as best we can. If I'm under contract with the club and if I'm planning with the club the next season, of course I expect to be here." Silva has previously resisted the temptation to head to Saudi Arabia, where there is serious interest in him. Al-Hilal previously tabled a mega £40million two-year deal, but he chose to remain at Craven Cottage. Juventus have been unable to tempt Conte back to the club. Their dominance of Italian football began when Conte was in charge but he's since moved on and excelled elsewhere. He's just claimed the Serie A title with Napoli and looks as if he'll remain despite talk of a sudden exit. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
