Yankees reliever Jake Cousins ‘moving toward' needing Tommy John surgery

New York Times18 hours ago

BOSTON — Since the start of May, the New York Yankees' bullpen has ranked in the bottom 10 in ERA and FIP. One of their key relievers was due back soon and was seen as someone who could help stabilize the group, but that now seems unlikely.
Jake Cousins, who has yet to pitch this season because of a flexor strain, is 'moving toward' needing Tommy John surgery, manager Aaron Boone said Saturday. Cousins was recently on a minor-league rehab assignment working toward making his season debut, but was pulled off of it earlier this week after feeling pain in his elbow. It was his second setback in his rehab this season, after dealing with a pectoral issue in May.

The loss of Cousins is quite significant for the Yankees. He was one of their better pitchers last season after getting traded from the Chicago White Sox. Cousins had a 2.37 ERA and a 34.2 percent strikeout rate across 38 innings.
If Cousins does need Tommy John surgery, the timing would likely mean it'll also cost him the 2026 season. Cousins, 30, is eligible for the first year of arbitration this offseason. If the Yankees wanted to keep Cousins and have him rehab with the organization, he'll likely make less than $1 million. A potential issue with keeping Cousins through the offseason though is he would take a 40-man roster spot, and the Yankees may need it depending on what they do.
Even before Cousins was diagnosed with a UCL injury, the Yankees still needed to add at least one reliever to their bullpen ahead of next month's trade deadline. That becomes even more important with one of their potential high-leverage relievers likely bound to miss the entirety of the year.
The Yankees' injury news wasn't all bad on Saturday. Boone said designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton (double tennis elbow) could make his season debut Monday or Tuesday at Yankee Stadium against the Los Angeles Angels. Luis Gil (lat strain) is about two weeks away from facing live hitters. He's still several weeks out from making his season debut.

Tracy McGrady thinks Jamaal Tinsley has better handles than Kyrie Irving: "Probably the best I've seen"

Tracy McGrady thinks Jamaal Tinsley has better handles than Kyrie Irving: "Probably the best I've seen" originally appeared on Basketball Network. Kyrie Irving is one of the most electrifying bucket-getters in the NBA, thanks not only to his scoring arsenal but also to his masterful handles. But according to Tracy McGrady, Jamaal Tinsley was on another level when it comes to handling the ball, even though he admits Irving is still a must-watch. Advertisement "Man, I don't think nobody had better handles than Jamaal Tinsley, even Kyrie," McGrady said on The Young Man & the Three podcast. "I think Jamaal Tinsley's handles were probably the best I've seen. That's an argument, though. He was nice with that thing on a string." The best ball handler debate Most still pick Irving as the best ball handler in NBA history. Allen Iverson, for example, belongs in that group. He aptly described Irving's style as similar to a predator playing around with its prey. "He got the best," A.I. said of Irving's handles on The Big Podcast with Shaquille O'Neal and Adam Lefkoe. "Kyrie will have you beat, and then bring it back and play with it. He's toying with people, you know what I mean? He can still just go, but if he feels like playing with you." Advertisement Now, Shaquille O'Neal disagreed with Iverson's pick, naming Jason Williams, his former Miami Heat point guard, as his personal best. O'Neal said Irving's style is too herky-jerky for his taste, while Williams had the whole package and was a smoother operator. In addition to Tinsley, Irving, Iverson and Williams, Jamal Crawford is mentioned in this conversation. Crawford's handle was so fluid that even seasoned defenders struggled to stay in front of him. He also had patented dribble moves that only he could do in a real game. Then there's Stephen Curry, whose combination of tight handles and unlimited range puts constant pressure on defenses. Curry's handle may not be as flashy as Irving's or Crawford's, but his control and ability to create space using that dribble are unmatched. Related: "Yeah, they'll probably have to do something" - Bird says the NBA will be forced to move the 3-point line back if high volume continues What Tinsley was known for in the NBA After his New York streetball days, during which he earned the nickname "Mel the Abuser," Tinsley went on to carve out a solid 11-year NBA career with multiple teams. As a rookie, he even ranked among the league leaders in assists per game, showcasing his elite playmaking from day one. Advertisement Tinsley's ball handling was controlled and deliberate, with an old-school feel contrasting with Irving's flashier approach. Whether that's a positive or a knock depends on personal taste. However, beyond his handles and playmaking, Tinsley is often remembered for his role in sparking the Malice at the Palace. As Stephen Jackson recalled on the "All The Smoke" podcast, it was Jamaal who told Ron Artest to deliver a hard foul on Ben Wallace in retaliation for a hit Artest had taken during the previous year's Eastern Conference Finals. If it weren't for Tinsley's advice, the worst player-fan brawl in NBA history might've never happened. While his unwelcome participation in the Malice will always be part of Tinsley's NBA story, his ball handling will always come No.1 . It's part of his game that too often gets lost in the conversation and one that earned quiet respect, even if it didn't always grab the spotlight. The 2006 World Cup winner will hope to lead the struggling Squadra Azzurra to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. "Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football," Italian football federation president Gabriele Gravina said in a statement. "The blue jersey is like a second skin for him." Advertisement Former midfielder Gattuso, who was known during his playing career for his aggressive style of play, succeeds Luciano Spalletti after leaving as coach of Hadjuk Split earlier this month. Spalletti had been on the bench for Italy's recent 2-0 victory against Moldova, but his departure had already been decided beforehand after a run of bad results. Gianluigi Buffon, Gattuso's former team-mate from the 2006 World Cup and now the national team's coordinator, has described the appointment as "the best possible choice." Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup in both 2018 and 2022. Advertisement The team sit in third place in Group I of the 2026 qualifiers with only three points, trailing Norway (12 points) and Israel (6 points), though both have played more matches. Only the group winners qualify directly for the World Cup, while the runners-up enter the play-offs. Gattuso's unveiling as the new national coach is scheduled for Thursday in Rome. Gravina emphasized the importance of the coming months, saying: "His motivation, professionalism and experience will be fundamental in tackling the national team's upcoming challenges. I am fully aware of the significance of the goal we want to achieve." The 47-year-old Gattuso previously managed AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Olympique Marseille. The length of his contract as Italy coach remains unclear. Media reports have said former Roma boss Claudio Ranieri declined the role.
