Fake news alert: Sanral not changing speed limits
The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) has distanced itself from a false communique claiming it is revising speed limits and enforcing stricter laws to reduce fatalities on the country's roads.
According to Lowvelder, Sanral spokesperson Vusi Mona said the information circulating on social media about new speed limits on the roads is not true.
'Sanral has a distinct mandate to manage the country's national road network. This mandate includes the financing, planning, development, improvement, maintenance and rehabilitation of the national roads, as prescribed by the Sanral Act of 1998. The Sanral mandate does not include any enforcement rights, be that related to speed, safety or security,' said Mona.
According to the fake communique being circulated, effective from July 1, Sanral Highway Law will implement adjusted limits across South Africa's national highway system.
These include:
Urban roads reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h
Rural roads adjusted from 100km/h to 80km/h
Highways and national routes capped at 110km/h, down from 120km/h
Heavy vehicles limited to 90km/h on all roads
School zones to have a strict 30km/h speed limit during school hours
'We encourage members of the public to contact Sanral's hotline number on 0800 204 508 or email at sanral@tip-offs.co.za if they come across suspicious information being circulated,' Mona said.
Mona also requested members of the public not to spread unverified information.

Limpopo police bust R3m cross-border smuggling ring bound for Malawi
Limpopo police have dismantled a sophisticated cross-border smuggling syndicate operating between South Africa and Malawi, recovering stolen goods worth more than R3m. Polokwane Review reports that the breakthrough came in the early hours of Thursday morning when the Limpopo Anti-Smuggling Task Team, assisted by Tshimollo Security and Investigation and Shadow Secure Technology, intercepted a Scania truck pulling superlink trailers near the Polokwane weighbridge. The vehicle was travelling from Cape Town to Malawi via the Beitbridge Border Post. Following an 18-hour joint operation, officers recovered: Chopped parts of a Ford Ranger reported stolen in Nyanga, including the engine, dashboard, radiator, differential and steering wheel 60 disassembled motorcycles concealed in drums and containers, reported stolen at various Western Cape police stations, including Bellville, Mfuleni, Muizenberg, Nyanga, Milnerton, Sea Point and Athlone Stolen electronics, including plasma TVs, sound systems, solar tower batteries and cellphones Scania truck and trailers used in the smuggling operation. Four men, all foreign nationals aged between 37 and 50, were arrested and are expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of possession of suspected stolen goods. Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the arrests. 'This breakthrough represents a major victory against sophisticated criminal networks exploiting our borders. The collaboration between our task team and private partners shows the power of co-ordinated enforcement. We will continue to target these syndicates until they are dismantled completely.' Businessman shot and killed in Hazyview
The Hazyview police in Mpumalanga are in search of a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a businessman at Sand River Trust on Wednesday. According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the SAPS responded to reports of a shooting at a popular eatery in the area. Lowvelder reports that when SAPS arrived, they found the victim, Eddie Khoza, lying motionless on the ground and covered with a blanket. 'Police investigations have indicated that a man entered the premises posing as a customer. The suspect suddenly drew a firearm and shot the victim at point-blank range. The victim is said to have attempted to get help but collapsed in the street and was further shot by his assailant, who then fled the scene on foot. Emergency medical services later declared him dead at the scene,' Ndubane says. She says multiple shell casings were recovered at the scene. The police are appealing to the public for assistance in locating the suspect. Anyone with information that could aid the investigation is urged to contact Detective Captain Eddie Raphakgadi on 082 449 0231. Limpopo police seize R3m worth of stolen goods, foreign nationals arrested
Limpopo police have arrested four foreign nationals and recovered goods valued at over R3 million in the fight against organised crime with the successful dismantling of one of the most sophisticated cross-border smuggling networks operating between South Africa and Malawi. On Thursday, 5 June, at approximately 02:00, the Limpopo Anti-Smuggling Task Team, supported by private security companies, intercepted a Scania truck pulling superlink trailers near the Polokwane weighbridge. The vehicle was en-route from Cape Town to Malawi via the Beitbridge border post. Following an extensive 18-hour operation and thorough search, the joint team recovered various parts from vehicles and motorcycles that were reported stolen in Cape Town. South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Limpopo colonel Malesela Ledwaba said they were able to recover chopped parts of a Ford Ranger reported stolen in Nyanga in May, including an engine, dashboard, radiator, differential and steering wheel, sixty(60) disassembled motorcycles concealed in drums and containers, reported stolen from multiple Western Cape police stations including Bellville, Mfuleni, Muizenberg, Nyanga, Milnerton, Sea Point, and Athlone. Ledwaba said various electronic goods including plasma TVs, sound systems, solar tower batteries, and cellphones suspected to be stolen, were recovered. Additionally, the Scania truck and trailers used in the smuggling operation were also seized as part of the investigation. The total value of recovered goods is over R3 million. The four foreign national males aged between 37 and 50 years, were arrested and will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Monday, 9 June, on charges of possession of suspected stolen goods. Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the successful operation saying the breakthrough represents a major victory against sophisticated criminal networks that have been exploiting our borders to traffic stolen goods. 'The collaboration between our Anti-Smuggling Task Team and private security partners demonstrates the power of coordinated law enforcement efforts.
