Fourways' illegal taxi ranks continue to live by their own rules
The ongoing saga of illegal taxi operations at the intersection of Witkoppen Road and Winnie Mandela Drive near Fourways Mall has taken a new turn.
Following a recent clean-up effort by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Fourways Improvement District, and Ward 94 councillor David Foley to remove taxi drivers and hawkers, taxi drivers have returned.

This time, they have moved their illegal rank to the opposite side of the road, continuing to cause chaos and safety concerns for commuters and residents.
Residents and motorists have expressed frustration over the persistent problem.
Lovemore Robson, who regularly cleans the area, said, 'These taxis don't only cause traffic and chaos in the area, but they also make the area dirty. I have tried to speak with the rank managers, and their response is always the same: they say they don't have anywhere else to go.
'To try to minimise the dirt in the area, I always leave bins and plastic so they throw their litter inside, but we always find the place dirty. Some even say they are creating employment/work for us because if they clean up the place, what are we going to do?'
Foley confirmed that he is aware of the new developments and is working on long-term solutions.
'According to Section 47 of the Gauteng Transport legislation, it specifically says that no food trailers, hawkers, etc are allowed on a provincial road.'
Foley confirmed that there will be another operation to clean up the area, as he is working with the Gauteng MEC of Roads and Transport, and taxi associations to resolve this issue.
'What Fourways needs is a taxi hub/ taxi rank where the taxis can park and street vendors can operate. But for now, I will keep cleaning up the area and enforce the city by-laws to keep the area clean,' added Foley.
Fourways Review reached out to Xolani Fihla, JMPD spokesperson and Mbuzeni Muhlongo of Alexandra Taxi Association on August 5, and has been following up. More information will be provided once it becomes available.

'Last year this time my dreams were shattered': Chidimma looks back on Miss SA exit

Former Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina has reflected on her journey at the pageant, a year after her withdrawal. The 24-year-old reigning Miss Universe Africa and Oceania withdrew from the competition after controversy surrounding her nationality. She moved on to compete for Miss Universe Nigeria, where she won. In an Instagram story, Adetshina shared a video from last year, dated August 12, four days after she stepped down, captioned: 'Last year, on this day, my dream was shattered in front of my eyes, but I'm grateful for this journey.' The beauty queen, who was born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother who allegedly stole someone's identity, faced intense scrutiny and online attacks, with many questioning her identity. The department of home affairs found prima facie evidence suggesting fraud and identity theft may have been committed by Adetshina's mother when she obtained her South African citizenship in 2001. Meanwhile, Adetshina sparked controversy recently after it was reported she was back in South Africa. Operation Dudula confirmed she is in Cape Town and called for her deportation. 'This goes against South African immigration laws, which clearly state anyone found to have used another person's identity — directly or indirectly — is liable for deportation,' Operation Dudula said. It suggested home affairs was misleading the public with 'fake' removals. 'Instead of ensuring our laws are upheld, home affairs appears to be conducting fake deportations that give the public a false sense of action. Many of these so-called 'removals' seem to be temporary arrests followed by quiet releases.'

1 dead, 2 injured in KZN hijacking incident

An alleged hijacker was shot dead in a shoot-out with security officers yesterday afternoon in Hammarsdale, KZN. The Witness reports that two other accomplices were injured and one fled on foot. According to Mi7 Group Director Colin David, the incident occurred just before 15:00 and Mi7's Emergency Medical Services was dispatched after reports of a shooting incident. 'An ambulance stationed at the Mi7 base at Hibiscus Hospital Cato Ridge was sent out along with Mi7's Advanced Life Support Rapid Response vehicle. Reports from the scene indicate a private security and vehicle tracking company were in an active pursuit of a stolen vehicle allegedly hijacked by four men – who were the occupants. It is alleged the hijackers opened fire on the security teams, who then fired back. 'During the altercation, one suspect was shot dead – declared dead by Mi7 medics on scene. Two others were treated for minor injuries and handed over into police custody. The fourth is believed to have fled on foot,' said David. No members of the security team were injured.
