Saiyaara stars Ahaan Panday, Aneet Padda create history with debut film, here's how

Khaleej Times2 days ago
Two new debutants have made their entry into Bollywood this week — Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda — with their film Saiyaara. Directed by Mohit Suri, the musical romance film has generated quite a bit of buzz among Indian moviegoers.
The movie earned ₹21.25 crore (Dh8.9 million) on its opening day at the Indian box office, which is quite a rare feat for a film fronted by debutants. The previous record for the biggest box office opening by debutants belonged to the film Dhadak (2018), which was the acting debut of Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter. The film had earned ₹8.76 crore (Dh3.7 million) net in India on release day, according to Indian media reports.
Indian film trade analyst Taran Adarsh said on X, "Saiyaara, starring newcomers, creates history. It is the biggest opener ever for a film headlined by newcomers. The Saiyaara wave has swept across the nation... Occupancy levels were phenomenal across the board... From urban centres to mass pockets, from multiplexes to single screens — the trends were extraordinary."

He added, "The advance bookings at national chains were terrific — surpassing biggies like Housefull 5, Raid 2, Sikandar, and SitaareZameenPar — clearly indicating a bumper opening... Not even YRF could've imagined such record-smashing numbers on Day 1. The phenomenal opening of Saiyaara is a wake-up call for an industry obsessed with star power over substance... All eyes now on the HISTORIC opening weekend!"
The buzz and the box office numbers have invited comparisons with the debut frenzy of Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan with Kaho Naa Pyar Hai (2000). Saiyaara is also being hailed as the Mohit Suri's career-best opener. His previous film Ek Villain (2014) had made ₹16.70 crore (Dh7.1 million) on its opening day, while Aashiqui 2 (2013) opened at ₹6.10 crore (Dh 2.6 million).
Who are Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda?
Ahaan Panday comes with considerable Bollywood connections. He is the son of businessman Chikki Panday and fitness coach and author Deanne Panday. Chikki Panday is Indian actor Chunky Panday's brother. Ahaan and actress Ananya Panday are cousins.
Before his debut film started creating ripples, Ahaan had attracted eyeballs with his sleek dance moves at sister Alanna Panday's wedding, a few years ago. Alanna is a popular social media influencer, and many major Bollywood stars, including Shah Rukh Khan, had attended her wedding.
Aneet Padda, the female lead of Saiyaara, was earlier seen in the Prime Video series, Big Girls Don't Cry (2024), in the role of Roohi. She also dabbles in singing.

'Superman' Tops Box Office Again With $57.3M in Second Weekend

Superman is proving it's not just a one-week wonder. The DC Studios blockbuster brought in $57.3 million during its second weekend in North American theaters, holding tight to the No. 1 spot, according to Sunday studio estimates. The Kryptonian comeback dipped just 54% from its domestic debut — a pretty standard drop for summer tentpoles — bringing its worldwide total to $406.8 million in just two weeks. Despite a trio of new films (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Smurfs, and Eddington), none came close to denting Superman's box office dominance. The movie, budgeted at around $225 million, is expected to fly into profitability thanks to strong reviews and solid audience scores. It's also a crucial title for DC Studios, marking the start of its 10-year cinematic reboot under co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran. Up next? 2026's Supergirl and Clayface. Meanwhile, F1: The Movie, co-produced by Apple Studios and Warner Bros., is still racing ahead. The Brad Pitt–led motorsports drama earned another $9.6 million domestically and $29.5 million overseas, pushing its global total to $460.8 million in its fourth weekend. Newcomers Struggle at the Starting Line Sony's I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot kicked off with $13 million, a modest opening for a once-iconic horror franchise. The film, set nearly three decades after the 1997 original, stars Madelyn Cline and Chase Sui Wonders. Reviews were rough (38% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the movie landed a 'C+' CinemaScore — not ideal for word-of-mouth. Smurfs, Paramount's latest take on the classic blue crew, debuted with $11 million, landing in fourth place. Despite Rihanna voicing Smurfette, critics weren't impressed (21% on Rotten Tomatoes). Viewers were a bit kinder with a 'B+' CinemaScore. With a $58 million production cost, the film is banking on its $22.6 million international launch to stay afloat. Ari Aster's new film Eddington had a quiet debut, opening with $4.2 million across 2,111 screens. The pandemic-era Western stars Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal in a political showdown that has sharply divided critics and viewers alike. The $25 million film received a 'C+' from CinemaScore, echoing the lukewarm reception of Aster's 2023 misfire, Beau Is Afraid. Hollywood's Hot Streak Continues Despite a few stumbles, the summer box office is having a moment. Comscore reports a 15.9% bump over last year's numbers, with domestic ticket sales hitting $2.6 billion so far this summer. Here's a quick look at the Top 10 Movies This Weekend (Domestic): Superman – $57.3M Jurassic World Rebirth – $23.4M I Know What You Did Last Summer – $13M Smurfs – $11M F1: The Movie – $9.6M How to Train Your Dragon – $5.4M Eddington – $4.3M Elio – $2M Lilo & Stitch – $1.5M 28 Years Later – $1.3M With Disney's The Fantastic Four: First Steps set to hit theaters next weekend, all eyes are on whether Marvel can snatch the crown from the Man of Steel — or if Superman will stay king of the summer box office.

Different, but no less: A tale of autism, family and ambition

It is only an artiste who creates his work through a life experience. Anupam Kher's recently released film Tanvi The Great, that he has co written, produced, directed and acted in, (He has also written his next book Different But No Less based on the making of the film), is inspired by his niece Tanvi, who is in the autistic spectrum. The film's actor Shubhangi Dutt, who plays Tanvi, is a student from his acting school, An Actor Prepares. At a family wedding in Gurugram a few years ago, when the entire Kher clan was dancing, celebrating and having fun, he observed his niece had sauntered off. When he followed her, he caught her immersed, looking at the sky. When asked what she was doing, she said that she was looking at her own world. 'Her words threw me off balance. I realised how much I didn't know her world, ' says Kher. Though he has taught at the Dilkhush Special School and has worked with differently abled children, this thought stayed with him and he decided to make a film around this topic. Kher's first directorial Om Jai Jagadish released in 2002 was a heartwarming story of three brothers in a joint family. Kher had decided then that his second film would have a relevant message combining a cause, family bonds and the love for the nation. 'This film that has actor Pallavi Joshi playing Tanvi's mom, focuses on family bonds, though the main character is autistic,' says Kher. 'For them, we are the odd ones out and not the other way around. Look at most of us - we have become manipulative and mean as a society. In the film industry like everywhere else, you are constantly told how someone else is better than you and you have to keep doing something to be in the news.' Adds Kher, 'I find differently abled people kinder, more compassionate and filled with innocence, a quality that we have lost completely. I think people with the autism spectrum are far more intelligent and better human beings than us and I wanted to bring out that super power' he adds. So, along with his writers Abhishek Dixit and Ankur Suman, he set out to write the story - the story of a girl in the autistic spectrum who wants to join the Indian Army. The Indian Army incidentally, doesn't have recruits from the spectrum. Kher plays her grandfather in the film, someone who is bitter due to the loss of his wife and young son who is martyred. A far cry from Kher's own grandpa who was full of life. He recollects a time in childhood when he asked his granddad how the entire joint family was so happy even if they were poor. ' He had said that, for people who are poor, the cheapest luxury is to be happy and we need to celebrate happiness." Eminent Hollywood actor Robert De Niro attended the film's premiere and Ms Draupadi Murmu, the President of India, sat through the film at a special screening at her official residence, the Rashtrapati Bhavan, lauding the performance. 'We got a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival as well as in London. Perhaps, people identified with the goodness the film radiates,' says Kher. During the making of the film, the crew was instructed to be calm - as in speak to each other politely and kindly, to create an aura of goodness. ' No harsh words were used or hurried activity that made people impatient and scream. It worked.' So how did the real Tanvi react to the onscreen Tanvi. ' My niece came to the screening. She sang a song too. Usually when you want to hug her, you have to ask for her permission. And she sang Lag Ja Gale … and made us all emotional.' The film was also shown to the Chief of Army and other soldiers and they all admitted that it made them cry. ' For me, that is heartening,' he says. While making the film, Kher decided to write the book. I decided to call it Different But No Less, which is a tagline of the film Tanvi The Great. 'The book is not about storms but about sailing through them, not letting anyone else get affected by your predicament but putting your own faith out there and following the greatest GPS God has gifted us - our heart.' All actors went through workshops conducted by Kher to sensitize them to autism. 'The film is not a blockbuster but it has succeeded in touching hearts. After 40 years of Saaransh (Kher's debut film), I'm getting the same kind of love in this film,' says Kher. 'Thankfully actors survive the long haul, unlike stars.' We agree!

Mohanlal was the impetus behind 'Drishyam 3', says Jeethu Joseph

Director Jeethu Joseph, who delivered the blockbusters Drishyam and Drishyam 2, catapulting its protagonist Georgekutty into India's popular culture, revealed that the draft of the third instalment of the series, Drishyam 3, is ready. And it was actor Mohanlal — whose steely portrayal of a father ready to shield his family from adversaries won laurels — who prompted him to write Drishyam 3. Joseph, while recently speaking at the inaugural of a film and drama club at Nirmala College in Muvattupuzha in Kerala, said that he was under immense pressure while writing the draft. 'When I finished (writing), I felt relief,' he said in a video of the event. The director is juggling multiple projects, including the shoots for the Malayalam thrillers Mirage, which stars Asif Ali and Aparna Balamurali in the lead; and Valathu Vashathe Kallan, with Biju Menon and Joju George. Joseph revealed that his day would begin early by around 3.30 AM, as he would write for Drishyam 3 in between. 'It was a struggle; mentally and physically I was tired,' he said. 'But now it is a great feeling.' In an interview with Mathrubhumi, Joseph said that the impetus for the third instalment came from Mohanlal, soon after Drishyam 2 (2021). 'Though I was not sure about what to say at that time, I told him that if we ever went for another sequel, I wish for the climax to be crafted in a particular way. I shared my thoughts with him,' Joseph was quoted as saying by the publication. "At that time I had said that if Georgekutty returns once again, the climax of the movie will be in a particular way." ' Lalettan (or how Mohanlal is popularly referred to in Kerala) liked it and asked me to have a try... and if it comes right, let's move ahead with the story,' Joseph was quoted as saying by Mathrubhumi. "It was the climax of Drishyam 3 that first came to my mind." Drishyam 3 will begin filming in September and is being produced by Aashirvaad Cinemas, a banner that has been traditionally associated with movies involving Mohanlal. The first two films of the franchise received wide critical acclaim and became massive hits at the box office, spawning massive interest and remakes in multiple Indian languages. Apart from Drishyam 3, Mirage and Valathu Vashathe Kallan, Joseph told Mathrubhumi he has a legal drama with Fahadh Faasil lined up for 2025.
