The Red Devils icon managed just five wins in 25 games over a seven-month period.
And it marked another underwhelming dugout performance following spells at Derby, DC United and Birmingham.
Rooney has since enjoyed spending time as a pundit, working on Amazon Prime while featuring on the Stick to Football podcast.
He also captained and managed England at Soccer Aid earlier this month, scoring the fastest goal in the charity match's history before ex-United teammate Carlos Tevez banged in four to hand victory to a World XI.
However, Rooney is now truly back in the beautiful game after landing a new job.
But it is not another managerial stint for England's former captain.
Instead, Rooney has linked up with a luxury training camp for children called Football Escapes.
The company organises half-term retreats for kids and their parents in exotic locations like Cyprus, Portugal and the Maldives.

Now, Rooney will get his boots back on for an October retreat to Dubai, having previously worked for them during an event in February.
He will teach aspiring youngsters the ropes alongside a fellow Premier League icon in ex-Tottenham and England defender Michael Dawson.
But training with Rooney doesn't come cheap.
Football Escapes are advertising a seven-day stay for a family of four at the 5-star Jumeirah Beach Hotel for £8499 on their website – and that's BEFORE flights.
A statement read: 'By popular demand, Wayne Rooney will be returning to Dubai, alongside Michael Dawson, for a week of Football Escapes magic this October Half Term, 20th - 24th October 2025.
'The kids will train daily, in their personalised kit, with our ambassadors and UEFA-qualified coaches, building their confidence and their skills with coaching from none other than Wayne Rooney.
'Including daily coaching from Wayne Rooney, a signed shirt, our incredible Parents' Match, a medals ceremony to round off the week, and of course a stay for you and your family at the world class Jumeirah Beach Hotel Resort in Dubai.'

Ryan Reynolds gets go-ahead to sign Liverpool and Wales star as £40m deal agreed
Ryan Reynolds gets go-ahead to sign Liverpool and Wales star as £40m deal agreed Wrexham are reportedly interested in signing a Liverpool youngster on loan, with the Red Dragons aiming to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2024/25 season Liverpool's Owen Beck is a target for Wrexham as they prepare for life in the Championship (Image: David Horton - CameraSport via Getty Images ) Wrexham could be given the go-ahead to secure a promising Liverpool player on loan as the Premier League champions inch towards a £40million deal. The Red Dragons, who recently celebrated their promotion to the Championship, are reportedly eager to acquire Liverpool left-back Owen Beck. The 22-year-old defender, a Wrexham native, made a strong impression during his loan spell at Blackburn Rovers in the second tier this season. Beck, who is the great-nephew of former Liverpool and Wrexham striker Ian Rush, became Rovers' preferred left-back until an unfortunate injury halted his progress. The Wales under-21 international featured in 26 matches for Blackburn in their pursuit of a play-off spot, but a hamstring problem restricted him to just one game after early February. Wrexham, under the ownership of Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, clinched their third consecutive promotion in April and are now eyeing Beck to bolster their squad. As per Beck's potential loan move could be facilitated by Liverpool's acquisition of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. The Hungarian left-back is rumoured to be nearing a move to Anfield for a fee around £40m and is expected to sign a five-year deal. Fans can watch the series with a £4.99 monthly plan, or get 12 months for the price of 10 by paying for a year upfront. Liverpool view Kerkez as the ideal replacement for Andy Robertson, who has attracted interest from La Liga heavyweights Atletico Madrid. Kerkez, who moved to Bournemouth in July 2023 from AZ Alkmaar, has been flourishing under the guidance of manager Andoni Iraola. In his inaugural Premier League campaign with Bournemouth, Kerkez took part in all 38 matches, finding the net six times and setting up two goals. Beck, meanwhile, has put his skills on display during numerous loan spells, catching attention especially while at Dundee. His outstanding displays shot him into the PFA Scottish Premiership Team of the Year for the 2023-24 season. However, Beck's prior loan periods at Famalicao and Bolton Wanderers didn't yield as much success, not making the pitch for the former and only playing nine matches for the latter. "It was a surprise that it didn't work out because of what we thought about Owen, but that's how it is with young boys. When you send them away from home, plenty of things can happen. "Things always have to fit well – it must be the right manager, must be the right team, if they have another left-back there who is experienced. There are so many things which can make a loan spell not really happen. But at Dundee everything was fine and he made big steps."

Crystal Palace's Europa League prospects improve after John Textor sells stake
Crystal Palace's hopes of playing in Europe next season appear to have been boosted after shareholder John Textor sold his stake in the club. Textor's shares in Palace threatened to be an obstacle to their participation in the Europa League next season because the American is also a shareholder in French side Lyon, who are set to enter the same competition. Under UEFA multi-club ownership rules, it looked as though Palace would miss out. However, the PA news agency understands from sources close to Palace that Textor's 45 per cent stake in the London club has now been sold to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. Reports have placed the price between £160m and £190m. The sale is subject to Premier League approval, but may now free Palace up to play in the Europa League. The Eagles qualified thanks to their FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last month. Textor, who through his Eagle Football Holdings group also owns a significant stake in Brazilian side Botafogo, initially invested in Palace in 2021. Palace declined to comment. Eagle Football Holdings and UEFA have both been approached for comment.
