Khaleel opts out of Essex journey due to personal reasons

London, Jul 28 (PTI) India left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed has cut short his stint with English county side Essex after just playing two first-class matches in the ongoing Championship due to personal reasons. Khaleel initially signed with the club for a two-month stint, which would've seen him play six first-class matches – the remainder of Essex's first-class season – as well as a maximum of 10 possible List A games in the One-Day Cup. 'While we are disappointed to see him (Khaleel) leave, we fully support Khaleel's decision and are grateful for the contributions he made during his time with us," Essex said in a statement. The club had announced his signing in June, after he had impressed for India A with a spell of 4 for 70 during a red-ball game against the England Lions. He joined Essex for a stint which was supposed to last till late September but played in just two matches, taking four wickets at an average of 64.50. Khaleel, who last played for India in 2019, has taken 15 wickets in 11 ODIs at an average of 31.00. PTI SSC SSC ATK Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Fan Told To Cover Pakistan Shirt In Manchester, Lancashire Opens Investigation

Last Updated: A fan was asked to cover his Pakistan cricket jersey at Old Trafford during the India-England Test. Upset, he left the ground. Lancashire is investigating the incident. A fan at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground was 'asked' to cover his Pakistan cricket jersey-like shirt during the fourth Test between India and England. Pakistan media identified him as Farooq Nazar. He posted a video on social media that showed a member of the security staff at the ground requesting him to cover the shirt, a replica of Pakistan's green limited-overs kit. 'I've been asked by control if you can cover that shirt up, please," a guard can be heard saying in the video. Later, another steward can be heard saying the shirt 'might be considered nationalistic'. However, visibly upset by the demand, the fan left the ground instead of following the suggestion A spokesperson for Lancashire, the county that owns and maintains the stadium, said in a statement that they were looking into it. 'We are aware of the incident referenced and are taking steps to understand the facts and context surrounding the matter fully," they said. This comes at a time when India-Pakistan relations are at a low. The countries haven't played bilateral cricket in years and a recent match between retired veterans for a private league had to be canceled after backlash. The two teams will play in the 2025 Asia Cup and the Women's World Cup, however. Old Trafford witnessed a spectacle Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja batted for over two sessions to rescue India from the verge of a crushing defeat and secure a memorable draw, keeping the fiercely contested series alive ahead of the decider at The Oval. After conceding a 311-run lead and losing both openers for ducks in the second innings, India showed remarkable grit to salvage a result, thanks largely to skipper Shubman Gill (103 off 238), K L Rahul (90 off 230), Jadeja (107* off 185) and Washington (101* off 206). With home skipper Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer dismissing a set Gill and Rahul in the morning, England eyed a series-clinching win, but Jadeja and Washington dug deep before steadily rotating strike to frustrate the bowlers late in the day. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 23:40 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. When Pakistan Test team left the ground leaving Gavaskar stranded at 86

CHANDIGARH, INDIA - MAY 30: Sunil Gavaskar, former cricketer and TV commentator looks on prior to the 2025 Eliminator IPL Finals match between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians at New PCA Stadium on May 30, 2025, in Chandigarh, India. (Photo by) New Delhi: The Stokes-Jadeja controversy towards the end of the fourth Test at Manchester has led to a fierce online debate. But far worse happened in the 1983 Bangalore Test against Pakistan when skipper Zaheer Abbas had arbitrarily left the field with his team on the last day leaving opener Sunil Gavaskar stranded on 86. The TOI reported that play was interrupted for 27 minutes while Sandeep Patil wrote in his autobiography, 'Sandy Storm', that 'half an hour' was wasted. Gavaskar, who was suffering from 'bronchial infection' for the previous two days, his opening partner Anshuman Gaekwad and the two umpires, Madhav Gothoskar and Swaroop Kishen, stayed on the ground during this period. 'The crowd was getting restive and impatient and had begun to boo and shout a little angrily now. The officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association rushed to confer with both the umpires as well as the manager of the Pakistan team, Intikhab Alam.' The Times of India report detailed what had led to the Pakistan team's exit. 'Zaheer's contention was that Pakistan had completed their quota of 77 overs for the day…. There was a great deal of wrangling over the rules before wiser counsels prevailed on Zaheer and manager Intikhab Alam…He (Zaheer) relented when the umpires pointed out that that the stipulation of 14 overs per hour in the playing condition did not apply for the last day when the mandatory overs had to be gone through,' the report said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! 'He perhaps saw the light when it was made clear to him that the match would be awarded to India if his team did not return to the field, England captain (Ray) Illingworth had acted similarly on the tour of Australia and had to bring his team back,' TOI said. The newspaper added, "a potentially explosive situation was thus defused. " Despite the loss of considerable time, the light was good enough for the game to resume. 'After this kind of drama one gets disturbed, especially a batsman. But Sunil, without any problem, completed his hundred,' wrote Patil. Gavaskar's description went, 'When play finally did start, I managed to get to my century in the 20th (mandatory) over. As the ball streaked to the boundary, I glanced at Zaheer and he was already walking towards the pavilion along with his players and we followed. ' It was Sunny's 28th Test ton, leaving him one short of Don Bradman's record 29 centuries. Gavaskar ended with 34 Test centuries. Gautam Gambhir fiery press conference: Slams critics, big update on Jasprit Bumrah, Karun vs Sai All-rounder Madan Lal, who was awarded MoM in that game, told TOI over phone that it was the right decision and within the rules to call the Pakistan team back. 'A batsman works hard to reach a century. Why shouldn't he be allowed to complete it?,' he asked. Not everyone in the Pakistan team condoned Zaheer's action. 'The walk-off by Zaheer had left a bad taste in the mouth and later in the evening on the flight to Delhi some of his players were critical of his actions, which they felt was unnecessary and unsporting,' Gavaskar said. For the record, the Test ended in a tame draw. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
