Alex Winter teases 'very personal' reunion with Keanu Reeves

Perth Nowa day ago

Keanu Reeves had a "crazy, inspired idea" that led to him and Alex Winter reuniting on Broadway.
The Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure stars are set to appear in a revival of Waiting for Godot and Alex - who will play Vladimir opposite Keanu as Estragon in the adaptation of Samuel Beckett's classic work - credits his friend for their reunion.
Speaking on the red carpet at the Tony Awards in New York City on Sunday (08.06.25), Alex told People magazine he and Keanu had "wanted to work together" again.
He added: "We have known each other a very long time — [which is fitting for] a play about two people who have known each other a very long time. ... And Keanu had this crazy, inspired idea that suddenly turned into reality, for both of us."
And Alex, 59, teased the production is "very, very personal" to himself and Keanu, 60.
Asked what fans can expect from Waiting For Godot, he said: "I think every time the play is done, it's different, because of who's playing it. It's very, very personal, and so we're bringing ourselves to it."
The two stars previously admitted they find it easy to work together because of their friendship.
In a video conversation with director Jamie Lloyd about Waiting for Godot shared with People magazine, Alex said: "It's like being in a band together. We kind of know each other's rhythms.
"Being able to bring that into, onto a stage, that's sort of our fundamental. That's in our bones away."
Keanu added: "The films that we did together, the Bill and Ted films, the language in those films had the architecture and their rhythms.
"Even from early days, we approached them theatrically or even commedia dell'arte, 'Okay, I do something, you do something, I get the ball, you get the ball.' "
"That's why, in the audition, we were so vibed. Because you didn't get that from other actors so much."
Waiting for Godot begins previews at the Hudson Theater in New York on 13 September ahead of a limited run from 28 September to 4 January.

Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr 'finally feels so damn comfortable' in his own skin

Leslie Odom Jr. finally feels "so damn comfortable" in his own skin. The 43-year-old actor - who is returning to Broadway for a limited run of Hamilton with the full original cast for the hit musical's 10th anniversary - has grown more comfortable with his own sense of style as he's got older. He told Women's Wear Daily: "Thankfully, most days, I feel so damn comfortable in my skin — finally. "Took me a long time to arrive there. I paid for it. "So even on special nights — even on formal nights — I don't want to give up that feeling. It's cost me too much.' Thankfully, he was happy to team up with Fear of God for the Tony Awards over the weekend, given his "longtime" love for the brand. He added: 'I'm a longtime fan. I've wanted to collaborate for years. And there's never been a more perfect opportunity. 'The clothes look like luxury and ease. There's a timeless quality to them. And there's a bigger story too maybe — about the people to whom these adjectives become attached. "The Fear of God ethos always feels relevant to me. Authenticity always feels fresh.' Fear of God dressed Leslie for both the red carpet, and his appearance later in the night on stage with Lin Manuel Miranda and other cast members. His stylist Avo Yermagyn explained how the red carpet look came from Jerry Lorenzo of Fear of God's fall 2025 A Civil Collection. Vermagyn said: '[It] draws inspiration from the elegance, resilience and humility that graced the American people of the late 1960s. "The inspiration of this collection taken from that era particularly struck a chord with me because Leslie and I have leaned into so many 1960s silhouettes in the past, from his Oscar run for One Night in Miami till today. "I love that both his red carpet and performance looks incorporate a turtleneck, a piece [that] has become a signature styling move with Leslie."

'An incredible night': Australian costume designer Marg Horwell on her 'surreal' Tony Award win

Australian costume designer Marg Horwell has called her win at this year's Tony Awards "surreal" and says she never could have imagined picking up theatre's most prestigious prize. Horwell picked up the Tony for Best Costume Design of a Play at Sunday night's ceremony in New York for her work on The Picture of Dorian Gray, the one-woman show starring Australian actress Sarah Snook. Snook, who plays 26 characters in the production, also took home Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play. After a whirlwind 24 hours, Horwell told ABC News Breakfast the cast and creative team behind the show have been basking in Tony Award glory. "It's been an incredible night. We were out all-night celebrating," she said. The Sydney Theatre Company's adaptation of Oscar Wilde's novel, directed by Kip Williams, had received six nominations at the 78th Tony Awards, the most-nominated solo show in the history of the ceremony. "It's a huge celebration of Australian theatre in a town that has so much theatre and such an amazing theatre community," Horwell said. "It's been a wonderful celebration of the show that has come from Australia and gone via London and then arrived in New York. We're so excited." The show, which originally premiered in 2020 in Sydney, is no stranger to accolades, winning multiple prizes at London's Olivier Awards in 2024 for the West End production. But Horwell recalls its humble inception, now, half a decade ago. "We made this show coming out of the pandemic, and it was at a time that we were trying to make work that was slightly safer or smaller and this was a huge ambitious project that came out of that time. "I'm so proud that we were, I don't know, naive enough or brave enough to be so bold," Horwell said. Creating countless costumes for Sarah Snook, Horwell says the production is a type of theatre audiences don't often get to see. "Quick changes or things that we normally try to hide in theatre are celebrated and centrestage in the show and it feels like you're getting to see a theatre secret." When asked about her advice to young Australians who want to pursue a career in the theatre, Horwell is reflective about her humble beginnings. "I saw as much as I possibly could and learnt as much as I possibly could by watching. My parents were great, took me to a lot of theatre when I was younger, and fringe theatre, small theatre in a small town. "Child me, I don't think would ever have believed that I would be sitting in a hotel in New York now with a Tony Award. "It's surreal. We're humbled."

'Not attuned': Harry Potter star Tom Felton ignites social media war after responding to author J.K. Rowling's anti-trans views

Tom Felton has divided social media after he praised author J.K. Rowling amid her controversial views on transgender issues. The Harry Potter star was asked by Variety if Rowling's views impacted him at all on the red carpet at the Tony Awards in New York on Monday. Felton, who played the villain Draco Malfoy in the world-famous films from 2001 through 2011, said "no" as he was not 'attuned' to the conversation. "I can't say it does," the 37-year-old British actor said. "I'm not really that attuned to it; the only thing I always remind myself is that I've been lucky enough to travel the world; here I am in New York. "I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter, and she's responsible for that, so I'm incredibly grateful." Felton's comments sparked a mixed reaction on X, with some fans lashing out at the star for his disregard. ''I'm not really that attuned to it', in other words, 'They don't affect me, so I can't bring myself to care'," one person said. "I course, they don't impact him. He's not the target of her scorn," another person said. However, other people praised Felton for his views, arguing the Harry Potter stars shouldn't bite the hand which fed them. "What an upstanding gentleman," said one fan. "Fair play, Tom, for showing strength of character and loyalty in acknowledgment of someone who opened a lot of doors for you." Another person said it was "amazing" that Felton played one of the "meanest characters" but was "one of the nicest people in real life." Felton's support for Rowling comes as he continues to capitalise on his fame after the success of the films. It was recently announced he will reprise his role as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child takes place 19 years after the series' final novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, parents Draco and Harry, Ron and Hermione, are waving their children off on Platform 9¾ before school starts again at Hogwarts. Felton's Broadway run will last from November 11 through March 22, 2026, and marks the first time an original Harry Potter star joins the production. His comments stand in stark contrast to the views of the three main original stars—Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. All three stars have criticised Rowling's anti-trans views in separate statements where they expressed solidarity with the trans community. The author, 59, responded by saying she would not forgive the trio, who she told to "save their apologies" for 'traumatised de transitioners'. Despite Rowling and her leading actors being torn apart over the years, the Harry Potter franchise remains strong despite her contentious views. A HBO adaptation of her seven-volume fantasy series is currently in production as a long-form TV show. Dominic McLaughlin has been cast for the titular role of Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermoine Granger. Last November, HBO chief Casey Bloys said Rowling's views have not "affected the casting or hiring of writers or productions staff'. A spokesperson for the network added the author "has a right to express her personal views" and the new series will "only benefit from her involvement." Rowling recently celebrated the ruling that only biological women meet the definition of a woman under equality laws in a landmark case. She has previously mocked the phrase "people who menstruate", said women's rights and "lived reality" would be "erased" if "sex isn't real", and called a list of trans women "men, every last one of them".
