
Ford Territory gets the feminine vote as a comfortable daily ride
At a price point of over R700 000, the Titanium has its hands full with Chinese rivals.
There is no denying that Ford South Africa have been short on model derivatives, especially in the most popular segment of the lot, the SUV space.
It has been mostly up to the Everest to fly the flag with Puma not quite hitting the mark. The arrival of new Ford Territory, however, last year could not have come at a better time. And to offer us a little reminder of what their mid-size SUV offers, Ford dropped off a top-of-the-range Titanium spec Territory with strict instructions that it is for my wife to drive and for her to offer a lifestyle opinion of what it is like living with their new SUV on a daily basis.
My wife thought it looked pretty good, but she did comment that it looked a lot like the other Chinese SUVs. Which it does, so I had to tell her that despite the Ford Territory wearing a 'true blue' badge, it is in fact very much a Chinese produced and sourced vehicle. This didn't bother her one bit, and I don't think it will many other potential buyers either.

Electric tailgate works wonders
Jumping to the interior, she immediately commented on what she felt was a decent amount of space for the humans and her seemingly endless amount of cargo she drags to work every day.
We will get to the all the largely unnoticed tech, but her highlight was that the tailgate operates remotely via the push of a button. I think this had a lot to do with her being in and out the boot all the time, and while it might seem to be a trivial point, for her, it would have been near the top of her list of reasons to scratch a car off her shopping list if a car didn't offer this.
For what it is worth, the Ford Territory Titanium offers a panoramic roof, LED ambient lighting, wireless smartphone charging, three USB ports up front and one in the rear and an eight-speaker Bluetooth audio system integrated into the centre touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, complemented by convenient steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

Marital squabbles
Right in front of you is a panoramic display that integrates a 12.3-inch high-definition digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch landscape infotainment touchscreen which you can operate using your finger or a rotary controller on the centre console.
This leads me into the final part of this review, and that is the drive. I am just going to say that my wife and I drive somewhat differently. Where she says everything is nice, I get on my high horse about technical things like throttle calibration. And I have to say, I do not like the throttle calibration on the Ford Territory. It's slow to react and when it does, it wants to take off like a race car, which is typical of almost all Chinese cars.
But, and this is a big but, my wife did not see things this way and was quite happy to trundle around the suburbs without a care in the world. Obviously, once on the boil, the 138kW of power and 318Nm of torque was more than enough for her and me for everyday driving.

Ford Territory in tough segment
The seven-speed dual clutch transmission was smooth enough too, with the only pain being the auto start/stop that was also slow to wake up when you wanted to pull away. But again, this was something that my wife was more than okay with. She also had no real interest in playing with the four selectable drive modes. There are Normal, Eco, Sport and Mountain. The latter was lost in translation I guess.

She did think the fuel consumption figure we achieved of 9.1 litres per 100km was more than acceptable for medium-sized SUV and I agree with her.

Despite some little niggles with the Ford Territory my wife was prepared to live with, the biggest hurdle this vehicle faces is the sales race. At a price point of R725 500 in the SUV segment, it's absolute war against the Chinese like Chery, Jaecoo, GWM, Haval, GAC and Jetour. All of them offer similar product at a similar, or better price.

China's rare-earth clampdown could stall carmaker output
Global auto executives are sounding the alarm on an impending shortage of rare-earth magnets from China — used in everything from windshield-wiper motors to anti-lock braking sensors — that could, in a worst-case scenario, force the closure of car factories within weeks. In a previously unreported May 9 letter to officials in the administration of US President Donald Trump, the head of the trade group representing General Motors, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai and other major carmakers raised urgent concerns. 'Without reliable access to these elements and magnets, automotive suppliers will be unable to produce critical automotive components, including automatic transmissions, throttle bodies, alternators, various motors, sensors, seat belts, speakers, lights, motors, power steering, and cameras,' the Alliance for Automotive Innovation wrote. The letter, which also was signed by the Motors & Equipment Association (Mema), , added that, without those essential automotive components, it would only be a matter of time before US vehicle factories are disrupted. 'In severe cases, this could include the need for reduced production volumes or even a shutdown of vehicle assembly lines,' the groups said. Both Alliance CEO John Bozzella and Mema CEO Bill Long told Reuters on Friday the situation was not resolved and remained a concern. They expressed gratitude for the Trump administration's high-level engagement to prevent disruption to US car production and the supply chain. Bozzella noted that the automotive issue was on the agenda during Treasury secretary Scott Bessent and US trade representative Jamieson Greer's talks with their Chinese counterparts in Geneva earlier this month. Greer told CNBC on Friday that China had agreed to lift restrictions on the exports of rare-earth magnets to US companies but was not moving fast enough to grant access for key US industries. 'We haven't seen the flow of some of those critical minerals as they were supposed to be doing.' China — which controls more than 90% of global processing capacity for the magnets used in everything from cars and fighter jets to home appliances — imposed restrictions in early April, requiring exporters to obtain licences from Beijing. Rare-earth magnet exports from China halved in April as companies grappled with an opaque application process for permits that sometimes requires hundreds of pages of documents. In a social media post Friday, Trump accused China of violating the terms of a deal reached this month to temporarily dial back tariffs and other trade restrictions. 'China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US,' Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. China's embassy in Washington responded by saying it was the US that was abusing export controls in the semiconductor sector. A US official with knowledge of the talks told Reuters that only tariffs and Chinese non-tariff countermeasures were covered in Geneva talks, and that US export controls were not part of the deal. The official also expressed frustration that Beijing appeared to be moving slowly on promises to issue rare-earth export licences, which could kick-start export control retaliation by Washington if carmakers vulnerable to shortages of the minerals are forced to halt production. While a handful of licences have been granted, including to some Volkswagen suppliers, Indian carmakers say they still have received none and will have to stop production in early June. German car parts maker Bosch said this week that its suppliers have been bogged down by China's more rigorous procedures to receive export licences. A Bosch spokesperson described the process as 'complex and time-consuming, partly due to the need to collect and provide a lot of information'.

Ryan Blaney triumphs in Nashville to claim first win of 2025
Ryan Blaney gained track position early in Sunday night's race near Music City and earned a playoff spot at the end of it. The Team Penske driver opened the second half of the NASCAR Cup Series' regular season schedule with a win over Carson Hocevar and the field at Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tennesse. Blaney took the lead late in Stage 2 of the 300-lap event - NASCAR's 14th points-paying race of the season - and stayed in front for the remainder to notch his first victory of 2025 and first at the Tennessee track, topping Hocevar by 2.83 seconds. The 2023 Cup champion, who won for the 14th time in his career, is the fifth different winner in Nashville's five Cup races. Blaney's crew chief Jonathan Hassler called for a two-tyre change on the first stop after Stage 1's conclusion, allowing the No 12 Ford to move up in the grid. "I thought it was a good call. We drove up to seventh there in the first stage," said Blaney, who led a race-high 139 laps. "The car was good (and) that set us up for the rest of the race. Great job by him as always. "I never gave up hope, that's for sure. We've had great speed all year, but it hasn't been the best year for us with good fortune." Denny Hamlin, making his 700th career start - becoming the 22nd driver in NASCAR history to do so - led 79 laps and finished third. S&P cuts outlook on Volvo over tariffs, China competition
S&P on Friday lowered the outlook for its BB+ credit rating on Volvo Cars to "negative" from "stable", saying US tariffs and tougher competition in China were hurting the company's growth prospects. The Sweden-based carmaker, majority-owned by China's Geely, last month withdrew its earnings guidance and announced cost cuts which will include laying off about 3,000 mostly white-collar workers amid a slowdown in demand. "The negative outlook on Volvo Cars reflects its large exposure to US import tariffs and the increasing marginalisation in the Chinese market," S&P said. "We expect Volvo Cars' profitability and cash generation after investments to come under pressure in 2025-2026, partly alleviated by a substantial cost reduction programme." The USs represented 16% of Volvo Cars sales in 2024, while China accounted for 20%. Volvo Cars produces only one of its models in the US, and relies on imports for the rest, leaving the company more exposed to US tariffs than many of its European peers. S&P said a proposed 2027 US ban on carmakers controlled by a Chinese entity also weighed on the outlook. In the most recent twist in the trade turmoil sparked by President Donald Trump, a US court on Thursday temporarily reinstated sweeping new tariffs, a day after another US court had ordered an immediate block on them.
