Made-in-India RAMBAAN rapid action Mobile BSL-3 Lab on wheels reaching out remote areas

'The RAMBAAN, the first of its kind Rapid Action Mobile BSL-3 laboratory as an essential part of India' plan for Advanced Augmented Network, as finest example of the AtmaNirbhar Bharat. The combination of MBSL-3 and a well-trained diagnostic team will be an asset for dealing with emerging/re-emerging disease outbreak investigations in the country.'
'The MBSL-3 is built on a heavy-duty Bharat Benz vehicle chassis, compliant with BS VI norms, designed to operate at extreme temperatures and altitudes and bears a maximum load capacity of 17 tons [17,000 kgs. It is classified as a Type-IV Rapid Response Mobile Laboratory (RRML) as per the WHO GOARN RRML laboratory network classification. The laboratory is designed to maintain a negative air pressure environment and is equipped with an advanced heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system with HEPA filters,' it said.
'The MBSL-3 was validated by ICMR-NIV, Pune, in 2022-2023 which included onsite and on field validation. The MBSL-3 laboratory's work area is divided into four zones: Zone-1 (driver and outer change room), Zone-2 (shower and inner change room), Zone-3 (main laboratory), and Zone-4 (material staging and decontamination area). Key installations within these zones include biological safety cabinets (Class II A2), an intelligent programmable logic controller system, a dynamic pass box, and an entry-exit shower system with biometric control.'
'The laboratory's power supply can be from a direct electric supply or a diesel generator, with an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) and petrol generators for backup.' Explained ICMR on power backup.
RAMBAAN was also deployed in response Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala.
'The MBSL-3 was successfully deployed and operationalised for the first time in response to the Nipah virus (NiV) outbreak in Kozhikode, Kerala, India, in September 2023 and again in Malappuram District of Kerala state in July 2024,' said ICMR.
This innovative and fully indigenous mobile laboratory not only enhanced India's outbreak response capabilities but also strengthened its public health delivery, especially in remote and inaccessible areas. The success in Kerala demonstrates the strategic advantage of such rapidly deployable and sophisticated infrastructure in tackling epidemiological challenges posed by high-risk pathogens. (ANI)

NZP to set up India's first biosafety level-3 lab for animal disease detection
Hyderabad: The Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) intends to set up a biosafety level-3 (BSL-3) lab on its premises soon, officials from the zoo said. A BSL-3 lab is a disease-detecting facility used to identify zoonotic diseases in animals and prevent their spread to human beings and vice versa. Once operational, it will help the zoo conduct everyday testing of the animals, help control the spread of viral infections, and also prepare for long-term disease management. "We have seen what COVID-19, a zoonotic disease that was transmitted from bats, could do to the human population. With the lab in place, we can constantly monitor the health of the animals and any potential viruses they may be carrying. Moreover, in a zoo like ours, where animal-human interaction is high, it becomes even more important to set up this lab to safeguard our visitors," said Sunil S Hiremath, the director of NZP. Presently, the zoo has a veterinary hospital that it uses to treat its animals for medical conditions and an in-house lab, where the zoo uses faecal and blood sample analysis for primary disease diagnosis like salmonellosis, gastrointestinal issues like acute or chronic gastroenteritis, and conditions like tuberculosis. Currently, the zoo is in the process of drafting a proposal to the central govt to get the necessary approvals. Once the project is approved, it will be launched as a govt of India project, officials said. "My team and I are in the process of finalising the details for the lab. Once that is done, we should have a clearer picture of how much the lab is going to cost us and how much space it will take," the director said. "We have the necessary manpower to run it successfully too. We have so many qualified scientists in the zoo, and the city is home to a number of reputed veterinary institutes and colleges like the VBRI and the Veterinary University in Rajendranagar, with whom we'll collaborate," the director added. Pradhan urges IIT students to lead innovation journey in India
New Delhi: Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday called upon students of IIT-Delhi to lead India's innovation journey towards ' Atmanirbhar Bharat ', echoing PM Narendra Modi's Independence Day emphasis on self-reliance. UP CM Yogi Adityanath inaugurates Regency Hospital in Gorakhpur
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath (ANI) GORAKHPUR: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday inaugurated Regency Hospital at Medical College Road in Gulharia, Gorakhpur. Addressing the event, CM Yogi Adityanath said that the hospital has "the biggest ICU to date," mentioning its 80-bed ICU capacity and noted that the hospital will benefit over five crore people. "The 80-bed ICU is the biggest ICU to date. You will see in the entire hospital how all precautions have been taken, which often leads to the spread of infection. If attention is not paid to any hospital, then it can become a medium of infection. This superspeciality hospital will become an excellent centre of health care for the five crore population of this region. There is no doubt about that. CM Yogi further highlighted that the hospital will give an ease of access to high-quality facilities in Gorakhpur, for which the common man has to go to cities like Lucknow, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Chennai. According to a press release, while addressing the gathering, CM Yogi said that Mathura reflects 5,000 years of ancient history and devotion. The chief minister announced a new master plan of Rs 30,000 crore for the holistic development of the Braj region. He said this plan will connect pilgrimage sites like Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, and Gokul with the memories of the Dwapar Yuga. He said, "Our government is committed to respecting the sentiments of revered saints and enriching the Braj region. We are making possible the works which were once considered impossible." He also mentioned the ropeway facility in Barsana, calling it a great relief for the elderly. He said, "This is the benefit of development, that we are continuously working for the convenience and safety of devotees". The chief minister noted that India has completed 78 years of independence and highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's vision of new resolutions for the centenary in 2047. Referring to the recent 24-hour discussion in the UP Assembly, he said society and government must work together to make Uttar Pradesh prosperous and developed by 2047.
