Port Blair, Aug 3 (PTI) A total of 140 people from Nicobari tribe and Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) will join the Andaman and Nicobar Police as part of their gradual integration in Port Blair, a senior officer said The PVTGs, which include Onge, Great Andamanese, Nicobari will join as Home Guard Volunteers and their recruitment process was successfully concluded in a fair, transparent and meticulous manner recently, the officer said.
Speaking to PTI, Director General of Police, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal said, 'I would like to congratulate all the willing PVTGs and Nicobari tribe who successfully secured their position in our department. We will provide them with a special training session considering their culture and tradition." He said, 'The recruitment process was carried out with a strong emphasis on inclusive representation and participation, especially from women candidates. The final selection also features candidates with academic and technical qualifications in fields such as hotel management, computer applications, and ITI trades. Their commitment will strengthen community-oriented policing in the Islands." Elaborating further, the DGP said, 'A Total of 132 Nicobari candidates, including 41 females, three Great Andamanese, including one female and five Onge, are now part of our police family." The gradual integration is also noticed among other PVTGs such as Shompens and Jarawas (Ang) who live in their respective reserved dense forests where non-tribals are barred. A watershed moment took place on April 19, 2024, when Nauaaw and six other Shompens, including Jetuwai, Thuwaee, and Chemai, voted in the Lok Sabha elections for the first time, marking a significant milestone for their community.
Shompens are predominantly uncontacted nomadic hunters, with a population of 244 on Nicobar Island.
'In the coming years, we should not be surprised to see Shompens joining the police force. The gradual integration of PVTGs is occurring through tribal policies that encourage developing communication channels and participation based on their willingness," a senior administrative officer said.

'Similar educational modules are in place for other PVTGs, which will help them differentiate between societal norms," he said.
When contacted, one of the selected Onge candidates of Dugong Creek, Tibilachu, said, 'I don't have words to express my gratitude to the Andaman police. It was a tough journey for me, but I am happy to clear all the tests." Another Great Andamanese female selected candidate, Kelu from Strait Island, feels that more PVTGs will come forward to join the mainstream and expressed her desire to learn combat skills during her tenure in Andaman police. Two Days After India Visit, China's Wang Yi To Attend Trilateral Conference With Afghanistan, Pakistan
Last Updated: The conference was originally scheduled to take place in Pakistan but had to be cancelled after the Afghan foreign minister did not receive clearance to travel to Islamabad Afghanistan will host the foreign ministers of China and Pakistan for a trilateral conference on August 20 in Kabul, two days after Wang Yi's scheduled visit to India to meet national security adviser Ajit Doval. China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan will take part with their top delegations for the meeting, which was originally scheduled to take place in Pakistan but had to be cancelled after the Afghan foreign minister did not receive clearance to travel to Pakistan. The three countries will discuss the expansion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Kabul, counterterrorism measures, and economic cooperation. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in Pakistan late on August 20 to take part in the Pak-China Strategic Dialogue in Islamabad. This will be right after his visit to New Delhi, where he is most likely to also intract with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. During the conference, Wang, Pakistan foreign minister Ishaq Dar and Afghan foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi will address trilateral issues of mutual interest, including CPEC expansion to Kabul, counterterrorism, rising militancy, and broader economic and trade matters. Wang and Doval are the designated special representatives for the boundary talks. The NSA had travelled to China in December last year and held the SR talks with Wang, weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to revive various dialogue mechanisms between the two sides at a meeting in the Russian city of Kazan. Modi is expected to travel to China later this month to attend the SCO summit, which will make it his first since the Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. Both sides are in the process to repair bilateral ties, with reports of resumption of border trade as well as air travel. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. AI boost for panchayats: New tool to auto-record minutes of meeting launched
New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) Union Panchayati Raj Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh 'Lalan' on Thursday launched SabhaSaar, an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered meeting summarisation tool designed to automatically generate structured minutes of meeting (MoM) from gram sabha or other panchayat meetings' audio and video recordings. The Panchayati Raj Ministry said in a statement that the SabhaSaar tool uses advanced AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies to transcribe spoken discussions, identify key decisions and action points, and produce well-formatted meeting minutes. Integrated with Bhashini, the Government of India's National Language Translation Mission, the tool currently supports 13 Indian languages, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for panchayat functionaries across linguistic backgrounds. The number of languages supported will also gradually be increased in future. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has urged all states and Union Territories (UTs) to utilise the SabhaSaar tool for generating MoMs for the special gram sabhas scheduled on August 15. As a first step, all the 1,194 gram panchayats of Tripura, including traditional local bodies, shall be using the tool to generate the minutes for these special gram sabhas. The Panchayati Raj Minister, along with Minister of State S P Singh Baghel and Panchayati Raj Secretary Vivek Bharadwaj also felicitated the special guests who will attend Independence Day celebrations here. Ukraine Watches Closely As Trump, Putin Meet In Alaska; Any Deal To Include Zelenskyy, Says US
Last Updated: Ukraine and its European allies fear a one-on-one meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on the fate of the conflict could be a recipe for disaster. Ukraine and its European allies will have their sights set on Anchorage, Alaska when US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet to discuss the fate of the war that has stretched for over three and a half years. Trump raised some concerns when on Thursday he acknowledged that his high-stakes summit with Putin may not succeed, stressing that any deal on Ukraine would involve a future three-way meeting with Kyiv to 'divvy things up." The Republican said the Anchorage summit was merely a prelude to a second, three-way meeting where the substantive dealmaking over the Ukraine war would happen. 'This meeting sets up the second meeting. The second meeting is going to be very, very important, because that's going to be a meeting where they make a deal," Trump told Fox News Radio. 'And I don't want to use the word 'divvy' things up. But you know, to a certain extent, it's not a bad term, okay?" Putin flies to Alaska on Friday at the US President's invitation who insisted no deal would be finalized without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy has rejected any territorial concessions to Russia, which has intensified attacks and made battlefield gains ahead of the Alaska talks. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said any future deal must guarantee Ukraine's security, adding that he was 'hopeful" about the summit. Putin's Nobel Play When asked if Donald Trump should win a Nobel Peace Prize as the President makes dubious claims of ending major global conflicts, Putin said: 'The US administration… is making quite energetic and sincere efforts to end the fighting". The talks are set to begin at 11:30 am (1930 GMT) Friday at the Elmendorf Air Force Base, a major US military installation in Alaska that has been crucial in monitoring Russia. 'This conversation will take place in a one-on-one format, naturally with the participation of interpreters," Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters in Moscow. He said that delegations would continue discussions over a working lunch and that Putin and Trump would hold a joint news conference. view comments First Published: August 14, 2025, 22:28 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
